Though not being the first European translation of the book, Legge's can been seen as the culmination in the translation history of ”Xiaojing” that reviewed the previous ones and provided a new perspective. Different from his predecessors such as Noel and Cibot, Legge's translation of ”Xiaojing” was done in the context of the new academic discipline of comparative religions during the Victorian era. By focusing on the debate about the ”term problem,” the author starts the journey of exploring Legge's translation from the phrase: ”Jiao she zhi li, suo yi shi Shangdi ye” (In the ceremonies at the altars of Heaven and Earth, they served God), and sees how Legge reinterpreted the doctrine of filial piety in the nineteenth century. At the end of this paper, the author provides an illustration to overview the translation and transmission of ”Xiaojing”, and aims to shed light on the research on the translating and interpretation of the Confucian classics and of the role of Western missionaries as Sinologists in the early modern Sino-West history of encounter.","PeriodicalId":40735,"journal":{"name":"Sino-Christian Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85199018","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper examines the way Cibot translated and interpreted Yuding xiaojing yanyi, which was one of his translations collected in his Doctrine ancienne et nouvelle des Chinois sur la piete filiale (1779) published (with the support of the French King Louis XV) in the fourth volume of Memoires concernant l'histoire, les sciences, les arts, les moeurs, les usages des Chinois. Differing from the first Xiaojing translator Francois Noel (1651-1729), who based his translation on the literati's texts (oeuvres litteraires), Cibot interpreted the meaning and the praxes of xiao in the context of the imperial texts of the early Qing. In this paper, I restrict my discussion to the textual analysis of Cibot's introduction to Kangxi Emperor's Yuzhi xiaojing yanyixu that is one of the imperial texts published in the same volume of Memoires. The Emperor is seen as the patriarch of the great family of the whole empire whose two obligations of xiao: loving and respecting the otherm, which constitutes the whole argument of Yuding xiaojing yanyi. The meaning of xiao was one of the debated topics in the Chinese Rites Controversy. Cibot's emphasis on the Emperor's piety recorded in the imperial texts seems to me to indicate that the moral and political interpretations of this Xiaojing was one of the last endeavors to defend the Riccian position concerning the Chinese ancestral rite, with the support of the imperial authorities of France and China, during the critical time of the Society of Jesus in the eighteenth century.","PeriodicalId":40735,"journal":{"name":"Sino-Christian Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90243948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
