The combination of those two along with the advanced energy storage systems contributed widely to the development of microgrids (MGs). This paper considers a microgrid system that consists of two distributed generators, which are diesel synchronous generator, and photovoltaic power system integrated with energy storage devices. The voltage and frequency at the point of common coupling need to be maintained at steady state conditions. Hence, an energy storage-based PI controller is designed by using a differential evolution optimization technique. The controller parameters (Kp and Ki) have been optimized under several operating conditions. The obtained inputs and outputs patterns used to train the neural networks (NN) to restore the system frequency and voltage effectively subjected to unknown disturbances. Finally, the NN has been tested, and the simulation results show a superior robustness performance of the proposed controller.","PeriodicalId":406952,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Power & Energy Society Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117106599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the promising technologies to generate power at the consumer level is the photovoltaic system (PV). To facilitate a higher level of PV penetration, DN planning and system operators encounter several challenges related to power reliability, stability, and quality that are affected by the intermittent nature of PV. A practical solution to overcome the uncertainty behavior of PV s is to use a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). However, the appropriate placement of the BESS in the DN plays a significant role to mitigate the higher level of power losses. Hence, optimal allocation is extremely desirable to maximize the benefits of BESS. In this paper, the optimal allocation of BESS in a DN with a high penetration level of the PV system is examined towards power losses reduction. The optimal allocation of BESS in DN performed using a genetic algorithm optimization technique. The optimal placement of BESS in DN was compared between an aggregated BESS and distributed BESS. The outcomes of both of them showed a reduction in power losses, where the optimal allocation in distributed BESS has the highest power losses reduction.","PeriodicalId":406952,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Power & Energy Society Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"235 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115582839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Presented in this paper is the algorithm design, the steps for generating training and testing data, and the metrics used for evaluation. It is shown that the algorithm is able to detect noisy BD in measurements with load variations, low-level natural noise and transients from bus faults. The benefits of the proposed algorithm include that it can be applied to several measurement subsets in parallel, it is data driven and therefore independent of network model errors, and it is computationally fast, making it a promising technique for online detection.","PeriodicalId":406952,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Power & Energy Society Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114418130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Distributed Energy Resources (DERs): Wind Turbine (WT), Energy Storages (ESs), Demand Response (DR), and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) are taken into account as outstanding solutions to this problem. In this paper, technical, financial, and environmental effects of DERs (i.e.,WT, ES, DR, and CHP) are considered on multi carrier energy networks. To install DERs, Energy Hub (EH) approach is utilized in this paper. EH is a node in electrical distribution networks that simplifies integration of different energy networks and DERs to the networks. GAMS software is used to solve the proposed Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model. The technical, financial, and environmental effects of the aforementioned DERs are evaluated through different cases. Simulation results demonstrate how the optimal utilization of DERs in the platform of energy hub can effectively address the developed problem in this paper.","PeriodicalId":406952,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Power & Energy Society Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122196145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, we study and model a smart commercial building, with BESS, DR heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) fans, equipped with modern variable frequency drive (VFD) controllers. We develop a two-stage strategy for frequency regulation, by exploiting the DR characteristics of the HVAC fans and BESS. In Stage 1, we minimize the day-ahead energy cost to optimally derive power reserve capacities of BESS and HVAC fans. In Stage 2, we develop an algorithm for frequency regulation using both BESS and HVAC fans, while satisfying the requirements for power reserve capacities computed in Stage 1. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm enables the system to follow frequency regulation signals closely, while satisfying the requirements for optimal day-ahead power reserve capacities to achieve energy cost saving.","PeriodicalId":406952,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Power & Energy Society Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121186460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This requires a drastic shift from the current energy mix dominated by coal and gas to renewables especially wind and solar. Due to the intermittent nature of renewable generation, the probability of generation-demand mismatch is high. This mandates the need for storage of the excess generation in order to prevent curtailment. Utilisation of domestic hot water tanks to absorb this excess provides us with an economical option at a nominal incremental cost. This paper develops a method to quantify the capacity of hot water tanks required and the potential savings in a low carbon future. The results are explained with the UK as a case study. The results indicate that between one and ten Terra Watt hours of curtailment can be expected in the UK in the year 2040. Eighty percent of this energy can be captured if one-fifth of all houses in the UK are equipped with smart hot water tanks.","PeriodicalId":406952,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Power & Energy Society Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128172874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A population of small loads can be aggregated to provide ancillary services to the grid and generate value for the owners. In this paper, we investigate the flexibility of such populations from the frequency-domain perspective. We propose a methodology to characterize the frequency-dependent flexibility of heterogeneous populations of loads considering practical constraints. The resultant frequency-domain characterization can help flexible load aggregators assess and represent the capability of contracted populations. System operators can also benefit from a better understanding of the capabilities of the service providers. The proposed model minimizes the annualized cost of the extreme fast charging station, including investment and maintenance cost of PV and energy storage, cost of purchasing energy from utility and demand charge. The decision variables are capacity of invested PV and the power and energy ratings of invested energy storage. To further reduce the annualized cost of the extreme fast charging station, the charging strategy of electric vehicles are integrated into the optimization model and coordinated with the power output of PV and charging/discharging of energy storage. Results of numerical simulations indicate that investment of PV and energy storage could help reduce the annualized cost of the extreme fast charging station significantly. However, since the PMU cost is still expensive, its location must be optimally determined. This paper proposes the optimal PMU placement scheme for the dynamic vulnerability assessment evaluating the Center-of-Inertia (COI) based frequency in fast coherent areas, identified by a novel Hierarchal Clustering (HC) method called HC-max which evaluates the clustering result via point biserial correlation coefficient. HC-max is superior in terms of clustering precision and less parameter compared to nonhierarchical clustering. After determination of fast coherent areas, PMUs are optimally placed via evaluation function which minimizes the COI based area frequency estimation error by bus frequency. The results show that the placed PMU can well estimate the COI based area frequency and detect the area out of step signature.","PeriodicalId":406952,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Power & Energy Society Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131162624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current methods of studying electric power grid resilience generally fall in one of two categories: 1.) dynamic simulation methods and 2.) network science methods based upon graph connectedness. The latter use “lightweight” models while the former is considerably more computationally intensive. Though these methods provide valuable insights, there is a need for analytical tools that balance analytical insight with computational complexity. This paper demonstrates, for the first time, a structural resilience analysis based upon the application of hetero-functional graph theory to electric power systems. These measures are of particular relevance to the grid's architectural transformation as it comes to accommodate distributed generation and meshed networks. The paper concludes with a discussion of some of the key differences between existing resilience measures and those based upon a hetero-functional graph analysis.","PeriodicalId":406952,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Power & Energy Society Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116311900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
