Such a query may include extraneous words that do not appear in the brief description of the book in the database. In addition, queries by users who only have vague memories of the stories may even include wrong keywords. In order to find books with such queries, we need a query relaxation scheme. In the scheme we propose in this paper, we classify words in a user query describing a book into four types based on their roles in the description, and for each type, we estimate the probability of their appearance in the description in the database. We estimate it based on statistics we obtained through an analysis of an archive of queries and answers in the past. We then generate relaxed queries by using every subset of the words in the user query, and rank the queries based on the expected ranking of the target book in their results. The expected ranking of the target book in a query result is estimated by using appearance probabilities of words in the query and the number of books matching the query. We conducted an experiment for comparing various ranking schemes by their MRR, and our ranking scheme that uses both the word appearance probabilities and the number of matching books showed a good performance.","PeriodicalId":405966,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conference on Web Intelligence (WI)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122390925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such diversity leads to uncorrelated prediction errors that cancel out in aggregate. As crowd members' judgments are often the result of solution strategies, diversity in solution strategies can enhance crowd wisdom. One of the most challenging tasks in sampling such a crowd is to determine the individual's solution strategy for a prediction problem. As participating individuals often share their perspectives through social media, we can use such data to identify an individual's solution strategy. In this paper, we propose a crowd selection approach using social media posts (tweets) indicating diverse solution strategies. We use tweet classification to identify participants' prediction strategies and categorize participants based on the binomial test to identify sets of participants that apply a similar strategy. We then form a diverse crowd by sampling participants from different sets. Using the domain of Fantasy Sports, we show that such a diverse crowd can outperform crowd selected at random and 90% of individual participants, and participant categorization schemes using word2vec. Further, we use a knowledge graph to investigate the factors forming such a diverse crowd and how these factors can lead to a better decision. Relative to bottom-up (data-driven) processes the approach presented here provides an explanation of diverse crowd behavior.","PeriodicalId":405966,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conference on Web Intelligence (WI)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124730746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the importance of this index, however, its characteristics are not well known. In this paper, we analyze the dwell time of news pages according to category in smartphone application. Our aim is to clarify the characteristics of dwell time and the relation between length of news page and dwell time, for each category. The results indicated different dwell time trends for each category. For example, the social category had fewer news pages with shorter dwell time than peaks, compared to other categories, and there were a few news pages with remarkably short dwell time. We also found a large difference by category in the correlation value between dwell time and length of news page. Specifically, political news had the highest correlation value and technology news had the lowest. In addition, we found that a user tends to get sufficient information about the news content from the news title in short dwell times.","PeriodicalId":405966,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conference on Web Intelligence (WI)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129835854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An important application of collective intelligence is national election predictions, which may encounter spectacular failures. While experts have provided various explanations, this paper posits that such influence among different types of voters is the primary reason. The 2015 UK Election as a case was studied, which demonstrates that such influence is intrinsic to collective intelligence. This paper then proposes a social influence-based prediction model to remedy these failures. Experiments demonstrate that the new model can account for the existence of such social influence.","PeriodicalId":405966,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conference on Web Intelligence (WI)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125516974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our method, called QuickCent, is inspired in so called fast and frugal heuristics, which are heuristics initially proposed to model the human quantitative estimation process. The centrality index that we estimate is the harmonic index which is a measure based on shortest-path distances, so infeasible to compute on large networks. We compare QuickCent with known machine learning algorithms on synthetic data. Our experiments show that QuickCent is able to make robust estimates compared with alternative methods achieving low-error variance estimates even with a small training set. Moreover, QuickCent is comparable in efficiency -accuracy and time cost-to more complex methods. Our initial results show that simple heuristics and biologically inspired computational methods are a promising line of research in the context of network measure estimations.","PeriodicalId":405966,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conference on Web Intelligence (WI)","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121399085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, we propose an approach that explores spatial and semantic aspects in free-text messages shared on location-based social networks (LBSNs) for uncovering and mapping the perception reflected regarding urban outdoor areas. Studying outdoor areas of Chicago, we show that LBSN data carry valuable information about places and could also be used to extract urban perception, helping to better understand urban areas from many aspects. We demonstrate, through a survey with volunteers, that our approach has the potential to correctly capture the opinion considered by the users regarding the reflected perception of those areas, indicating that it could be a feasible alternative for the task under study.","PeriodicalId":405966,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conference on Web Intelligence (WI)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116528416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To facilitate the potential customer discovery process, a costly and labor intensive manual selection process is done to build a brand portfolio consisting of multimedia data relevant to the brand. To automate this process in a cost-effective way, in this paper, we propose a novel Multi-Modal Distance Metric Learning (M2DML) method, which learns a data-dependent similarity metric from multi-modal media data, aiming at assisting the brands to retrieve appropriate media data from social networks for potential customer discovery. To comprehensively model the supervised information of multi-modal data, M2DML aims to learn both the intra-modality and inter-modality distance metrics simultaneously. To further explore the unsupervised information of the dataset, M2DML aims to preserve the manifold structure of the multi-modal data. The proposed method is then formulated as a standard eigen-decomposition problem and the closed form solution is efficiently computed. Experiments on a standard multi-modal media dataset and a self-collected dataset validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":405966,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conference on Web Intelligence (WI)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126620060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditional face-to-face clinical interventions are costly, and, in many cases, leave out a sizable number of people who are struggling to improve their mental health conditions. Alternative forms of intervention that have a larger reach and allow for continual interaction while reducing costs are being investigated, including those relying on Online Social Networks (OSNs). Initially designed for promoting friendship, OSNs started to connect people willing to share experiences related to mental health disorders. In light of this fact, we investigate four Reddit online communities: Depression, SuicideWatch, Anxiety and Bipolar. We focus on user activities and interactions, and on the discourse pattern analysis of posts and comments made by the community members. We found that (i) interaction patterns are very similar across these subreddits, and interactions are centered around content, rather than users; (ii) most posts that generate the longest discussion trees are requests for help and, more often than not, multiple users offer support; (iii) the four subreddits share a common language and encouragement words are a frequent pattern, for instance. We hope that the insights unveiled by our analyses will help on building successful online interventions to support people in crisis and assist their counselors.","PeriodicalId":405966,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conference on Web Intelligence (WI)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126710222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
