However, not only the share of renewables, but the energy mix also has an important role to play. Traditional biomass must be distinguished from modern renewables and the traditional biomass trap must be avoided. Fuel switching is not a simple task, the theories of energy ladder and energy stacking are used to highlight it. The study aims to measure the degree of change in the household energy mix. The Moore, NAV and the modified LILIEN indices are applied. The results show that the progress of the sustainable energy transition is measurable, but its’ degree is stagnating or even declining in the household sector of the EU. In most CEE countries, the households are stuck in the so-called traditional biomass trap. Energy strategies should make it a priority to break out of this trap by promoting a shift from traditional firewood to more modern and cleaner renewable energy sources.","PeriodicalId":405707,"journal":{"name":"2023 19th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"118 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125756111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We demonstrate the validity of our method for the British power market where sufficient data exists for validation. There, the transmission system operator publishes the values of indicated aggregated generation every half an hour, for delivery up to a few days in the future. Additionally, the operator publishes power plant physical parameters, and eventually power plant positions just before the delivery. Our method enables us to reconstruct individual power plant positions resulting from the day-ahead auction and to capture changes in positions during the intraday market. Applications of this method enable tracking of unusual activity on the market, the anticipation of transmission systemrelated actions, as well as estimating power plant running costs more accurately.","PeriodicalId":405707,"journal":{"name":"2023 19th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133907654","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One option for providing this process heat in a decarbonized energy system is with either green or blue hydrogen. The demand for hydrogen with low CO2 intensity will increase with emission restrictions, and the potential for industrial demand response will rise with higher shares of variable renewables in the electricity grid. However, knowledge regarding how the different hydrogen types affect the costs of industrial processes and their flexibility potential is scarce. Hence, we apply a cost-optimization model to assess the decarbonization of the heating process, and the flexibility of the process depending on the hydrogen source. We find that the ability to switch between both green and blue hydrogen is beneficial for the industrial actor, and that the flexibility is highest with an equal share of green and blue hydrogen.","PeriodicalId":405707,"journal":{"name":"2023 19th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134105064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Social acceptance of these investments is required in order to implement hydrogen technologies as fast and efficiently as possible. This study investigates which benefits associated with green hydrogen foster its social acceptance. Using a between-subject design, we implement two different treatments. Both treatments have in common that the participants experience the transformation into a hydrogen economy in a virtual reality scenario. In Info Security of Supply we provide the participants information about the benefits of green hydrogen regarding the security of energy supply and climate protection. In Control we inform them only about the benefits regarding climate protection. Subsequently, the participants decide about the financial support of a hydrogen project. Our preliminary results show a higher support if the focus is solely on the positive impact of green hydrogen for the climate protection.","PeriodicalId":405707,"journal":{"name":"2023 19th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133726109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although system service payments exist in some electricity markets, there is often insufficient incentive to invest in greater flexibility, either in the demand or supply side. Here, the economic benefits of various flexibility options are considered, leading towards a discussion of market incentives and strategies for reform. In addition to a range of traditional sources of flexibility from conventional generation, interconnection, and short duration batteries, the importance of system stability is emphasised, including synchronous condensers to supplement inertia, as well as medium-duration storage, and a more active balancing role for heat, transport and industrial loads. Each strategy alleviates the use of fossil fuel based gas plants during periods of system stress and enables the absorption of excess renewables. With over 80% of annual energy to be provided mostly by wind and solar power by 2030, Ireland provides a pertinent case for analysis.","PeriodicalId":405707,"journal":{"name":"2023 19th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"109 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116271875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We set the stage for future research in a case city district in Finland by analysing interviews and survey results of domain experts relevant for the emerging PED. We utilize strategic niche management to structure the data with factors including actor networks, expectations, and business models. We highlight the main conflicts and opportunities for cooperation with municipality-owned utility companies and other actors. We find that the role of incumbents is evolving as utilities have begun to engage in strategic partnerships. Still, especially data-driven niche development lacks an explicit shared vision and must be more clearly governed by the public administration. We expect that our findings will be relevant to municipalities and academics, especially in terms of PED developments where district heating is present.","PeriodicalId":405707,"journal":{"name":"2023 19th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123663628","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, the utility-scale deployment of these resources has become of utmost importance. The large-scale connections and the intermittent as well as variable characteristics of these RESs cause challenges in maintaining a balance between power generation and consumption. Furthermore, supplying base load using RESs is another challenge for system operators. Hybrid RESs (HRESs), including solar and wind, together with energy storage, might be a remedy via which the resources can complement each other to some extent. In this paper, using geographical data acquired from National Solar Radiation Database and Matlab/Simulink, the output of each individual solar panel and wind turbine unit in the Helsinki region are calculated and used to optimally size an HRES to supply the base load. The results indicate that an HRES is at least 10.5 times more cost-efficient compared to a single RES system. Furthermore, it can be seen that, even in Finland where there is not sufficient solar radiation in winter, the size of the required energy storage system reduces by at least 13.4 times when an HRES is used.","PeriodicalId":405707,"journal":{"name":"2023 19th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"14 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120822231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper exploits divergent forecasting approaches, ranging from time series and regression-based methods to a global dynamic-recursive Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) macroeconomic model, to forecast the annual final energy demand of the G7 countries over the 2000-2009 and 2010-2019 periods, at 5-year and 10-year time steps. The basic socio-economic indicators of the G7 countries over the 1972-2019 period are harvested or calculated to train or feed up the models utilized. Results suggest that there is no single best method to forecast the annual final energy demand, with the best-performing method depending on the forecasting horizon and characteristics of the country in question. Linear regression models should be utilized in \"perfect foresight exercises\" that hinge on a \"what-if\" rationale (e.g., scenario analyses), whereas time series methods should be prioritized over their counterparts in \"myopic foresight cases\".","PeriodicalId":405707,"journal":{"name":"2023 19th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123912124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its architecture is based on micro-services, such as the energy transaction service, the settlement service to compute the financial compensations among community members for the energy transacted, or a resource sizing service. This approach enables the platform to be more efficient and scalable, making easier to incorporate new functionalities while maintaining a secure community and energy transactions management. The transactions and settlement procedures, adapted to the Portuguese regulation, are described, and the results of the platform operating a post-delivery pool market are presented and analyzed.
