Modal characteristics are of paramount importance to the design and performance evaluation of rotating beams, and have been the subject of interest to many investigators. Accurate prediction of the dynamic characteristics of such structures is necessary in the early stages of the design process in order to avoid any possible conditions susceptible to resonance within the range of operating speed, and to prevent any failure that may occur because of sustained vibration at or near the resonant frequency range. While developing beam models, various parameters pertinent to the functional requirements were added in order to cope with aerodynamic issues as well as technical and economical issues. With all parameters present in the model, solving the problem becomes extremely complicated. An exact solution is almost impossible. Many simplified mathematical models with a variety of geometries and properties have been developed in the literature to investigate the dynamic characteristics of such rotating beams using a variety of methods.","PeriodicalId":405331,"journal":{"name":"The Shock and Vibration Digest","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129545883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, we give an introduction to the important concepts and mathematical properties of wavelets within the framework of time-frequency analysis of signals. Next, wavelet analysis is discussed as applied to relevant themes in vibrations, such as time-varying spectra estimation, random field synthesis, system identification, damage detection, and material characterization. In view of the large number of related books and journal articles published in recent decades, the list of selected references in the paper is not meant to be exhaustive. Nevertheless, the cited references aim to point out the salient features of wavelet analysis, and to identify significant contributions in each theme, with the goal of expediting additional research and development efforts.","PeriodicalId":405331,"journal":{"name":"The Shock and Vibration Digest","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132074408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main focus is on rotary seals for high-speed and high-pressure applications. These play an active role between the rotating and stationary parts of turbomachinery to prevent working fluid leakage; however, they can cause rotor instability. The main parameters that govern the instability are the RDPs of seals. This review includes a variety of rotary seals, a description of experimental rigs and measurement techniques, parameter estimation procedures, and uncertainty analysis. Based on the state of the art in the experimental estimation of the RDPs of seals, conclusions are made and future directions are suggested.","PeriodicalId":405331,"journal":{"name":"The Shock and Vibration Digest","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122302957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a tutorial that develops, in a simple, clear, concise, and precise form, the general equations that relate the unbalance weights in the correction planes with the vibrations in the supporting bearings, based on the concept of the mechanical impedance, for the particular case of an overhung rigid rotor. Important insights are provided to understand thoroughly the inherent additional cross-effect that is produced by the application of each of the existing exact methods of influence coefficients to the balancing of the overhung rigid rotors. Also discussed is a recent advance that consists of a new solution for the field balancing of the overhung rigid rotors. This alternative solution again combines the least cross-effect with the minimum number for the trial weights, and gives the correction weights directly for both balancing planes. The advantage of this new technique, with respect to the previous variation of the method of the influence coefficients, is that its implementation in any industrial balancer would require only minor changes in the programming. An explanation of the conversion that is necessary for different phase conventions within a computer program and examples of calculations with experimental data are included for completeness.","PeriodicalId":405331,"journal":{"name":"The Shock and Vibration Digest","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125685478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Embedded ultrasonic NDE permits active structural health monitoring, i.e. the on-demand interrogation of the structure to determine its current state of structural health. The enabling element of embedded ultrasonic NDE is the piezoelectric wafer active sensor (PWAS). We begin by reviewing the guided wave theory in plate, tube, and shell structures, with special attention to Lamb waves. The mechanisms of Lamb wave excitation and detection with embeddable PWAS transducers is presented. It is shown analytically and verified experimentally that Lamb wave mode tuning can be achieved by the judicious combination of PWAS dimensions, frequency value, and Lamb mode characteristics. Subsequently, we address in turn the use of pitch-catch, pulse-echo, and phased array ultrasonic methods for Lambwave damage detection. In each case, the conventional ultrasonic NDE results are contrasted with embedded NDE results. Detection of cracks, disbonds, delaminations, and diffuse damage in metallic and composite structures are exemplified. Other techniques, such as the time reversal method and the migration technique, are also presented. The paper ends with conclusions and suggestions for further work.","PeriodicalId":405331,"journal":{"name":"The Shock and Vibration Digest","volume":"815 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121494319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These eddy currents circulate inside the con- ductor generating a magnetic field of opposite polarity as the applied magnetic field. The interaction of the two magnetic fields causes a force that resists the change in magnetic flux. However, due to the internal resistance of the conductive material, the eddy currents will be dissipated into heat and the force will die out. As the eddy currents are dissipated, energy is removed from the system, thus producing a damp- ing effect. There are several different methods of inducing a time-varying magnetic field, and from each method arises the potential for a different type of damping system. There- fore, the research into eddy current and magnetic damping mechanisms has led to a diverse range of dampers, many of which are detailed in this paper. The majority of the research in eddy current damping has taken place in the area of mag- netic braking. A second topic that has received significant interest is the use of eddy current dampers for the suppres- sion of structural vibrations. However, much of this research is not concentrated in one area, but has been applied to a variety of different structural systems in a number of distinct ways. In this paper, we review the research into various types of eddy current damping mechanisms and we discuss the future of eddy currents with some potential uses that have not yet been studied.","PeriodicalId":405331,"journal":{"name":"The Shock and Vibration Digest","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121392266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To that end, an understanding of residual mode information is essential. Although the effects of neglecting residual terms are known and some solutions to this problem already exist, there is a lack of full understanding of their trends for a deeper and better solution to this problem. When are residual terms really important? To answer this question, a thorough investigation was undertaken to discover new residual term trends and to study some known ones. Only high-frequency residual terms are investigated in this paper. Their importance at resonance and anti-resonance, at point and transfer FRFs, as well as at translational and rotational FRFs, is investigated. A relationship is shown between the mass of the system and the high-frequency residual terms and this is the base for the formulation of the high-frequency residual term developed by the author, called the mass-residual approach. Examples are given at the end of the paper to illustrate and clarify the trends presented.","PeriodicalId":405331,"journal":{"name":"The Shock and Vibration Digest","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125489213","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They can sometimes result in catastrophic failure of equipment (rotor bursts) and, more often, in costly process upsets, repairs and premature scrapping and replacement of equipment. Cracked shafts still pose a significant and real threat to equipment in spite of the great advances made in the areas of metallurgy, manufacturing and design. In the past two decades, much research and many resources have gone into developing various on-line and off-line diagnostic techniques to effectively detect cracks before they cause serious damage. Because of the enormous amount of ongoing research in this area (more than 500 technical papers have been published in English alone in the past 30 years), there is a real need to periodically condense and summarize the information. This paper reviews literature on cracked shaft detection and diagnostics published after 1990.","PeriodicalId":405331,"journal":{"name":"The Shock and Vibration Digest","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125641503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the last few years, there has been a surge of research in the area of power harvesting. This increase in research has been brought on by the modern advances in wireless technology and low-power electronics such as microelectromechanical systems. The advances have allowed numerous doors to open for power harvesting systems in practical real-world applications. The use of piezoelectric materials to capitalize on the ambient vibrations surrounding a system is one method that has seen a dramatic rise in use for power harvesting. Piezoelectric materials have a crystalline structure that provides them with the ability to transform mechanical strain energy into electrical charge and, vice versa, to convert an applied electrical potential into mechanical strain. This property provides these materials with the ability to absorb mechanical energy from their surroundings, usually ambient vibration, and transform it into electrical energy that can be used to power other devices. While piezoelectric materials are the major method of harvesting energy, other methods do exist; for example, one of the conventional methods is the use of electromagnetic devices. In this paper we discuss the research that has been performed in the area of power harvesting, and the future goals that must be achieved for power harvesting systems to find their way into everyday use.","PeriodicalId":405331,"journal":{"name":"The Shock and Vibration Digest","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114031267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
