It finds a utopian current in Middlemarch in Dorothea's “plans” that pushes against a long critical history of reading the novel as reformist. Specifically, this article looks at the avant-garde paintings of Swedish modernist artist Hilma af Klint to argue for a “diagrammatic” and feminist political aesthetic in Dorothea Brooke's unrealized plans.","PeriodicalId":40489,"journal":{"name":"George Eliot-George Henry Lewes Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47003587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eliot explains that this is because “latter-born Theresas” are “helped by no coherent social faith and order” (3). This article considers Eliot's critique in the context of Charlotte Mary Yonge's novel The Daisy Chain (1856), in which the protagonist, Ethel May, founds a school and a church, arguing that the world of Middlemarch is more secularized, in the way that Charles Taylor uses the term, than the world of The Daisy Chain, and that this results in Dorothea having “no coherent social faith and order,” resulting in the failure of her plans for reform.","PeriodicalId":40489,"journal":{"name":"George Eliot-George Henry Lewes Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47111644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
