Taking as its point of departure the typology of culture and regeneration put forward by Evans and Shaw in their comprehensive review of the evidence relating to The Contribution of Culture to Regeneration in the UK (2004): culture-led regeneration; cultural regeneration; and, culture and regeneration, it draws on specific examples to complicate these narratives and posit that a reconceptualization of the ‘creative city’ during the post-industrial era is necessary to fully understand the ‘post-creative’ city which, Malcolm Miles (2103) suggests, might arise from new alliances between art work and everyday cultures.","PeriodicalId":404676,"journal":{"name":"Transforming Glasgow","volume":"125 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126156729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing on a body of research compiled by the Glasgow Centre for Population Health, this chapter provides a detailed examination of the health profiles of these populations as they have been shaped over time. The chapter begins by tracing their historical development in their UK and European context, before turning to examine the political, social and economic causal factors and processes which have, over time, contributed to the particularly poor health outcomes experienced in Glasgow. Building on this knowledge, the chapter draws to a close by exploring the potential future health trajectory of the city’s population. Glasgow provides a potent case for other cities and countries as they consider the ways in which politics and policy come to shape health, and health inequalities, across their populations.","PeriodicalId":404676,"journal":{"name":"Transforming Glasgow","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122412881","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has some of the lowest levels of car ownership in the UK, but has the most extensive urban motorway network and high car usage and congestion. It has the only underground railway of any age never to have been extended. Governance arrangements for transport have changed frequently, and have failed to deliver the kind of improvements taken for granted in peer cities. Can the city break out of this pattern and deliver the kind of transport it needs in 21 century context dominated by concerns over climate change and social inclusion as well as economic growth?","PeriodicalId":404676,"journal":{"name":"Transforming Glasgow","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115117135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the early 1980s through a series of public / private partnerships the city has focused heavily on building a more diverse economic structure based largely on a range of sectors in the service and knowledge based economies as well as more traditional approaches to inward investment, physical regeneration, skills and business growth. As a result Glasgow has experienced a significant economic recovery with sustained growth in employment since the mid 1990s and a strong rebound from the 2008 crash. The city now has a more diverse sectoral structure with much of the recovery based on the continuing strength of the city centre and the skill base of the population.","PeriodicalId":404676,"journal":{"name":"Transforming Glasgow","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124643927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
