Though many sensorless control algorithms have now been proposed in the literature, fewer complete closed loop implementations have been reported. Part of the reason is that the step of closing the control loop with estimated variables imposes strong demands on the quality of the estimates. This paper describes two filtering solutions with low computational cost requirements. The solutions are compared on an experimental setup using the authors' algorithm for position estimation in a permanent magnet synchronous motor.","PeriodicalId":404447,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IECON'97 23rd International Conference on Industrial Electronics, Control, and Instrumentation (Cat. A mouse is easy for a nondisabled person to operate, however not so easy for a handicapped person. In particular, a cerebral paralyzed person and a proximal spine injured person often have much difficulty in dealing with a mouse or can't use it at all. However, a person with a C4 injured spinal nerve is able to bend, stretch and rotate his neck and also able to raise his shoulders because the functions of his sternodeidomastoid and trapezius muscles remain. For those people, the authors have developed an input system using neck and shoulder motions instead of manual input by a mouse. In this study, two kinds of devices using limit switches and linear potentiometers were developed and both of the results were compared. As operability has to be improved, practical usefulness for the handicapped person was confirmed. Finally, the feasibility of such systems being used for the driving wheel-chairs was examined.","PeriodicalId":404447,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IECON'97 23rd International Conference on Industrial Electronics, Control, and Instrumentation (Cat. We often put disordered cords in order or undo knots out of necessity. To automate this routine by an intelligent machine, a cord needs to be traced from one end to the other. This paper proposes a technique for realizing the trace employing consistent labeling and a distance index. Image processing of a disordered cord provides the description of the cord by its subareas called cord areas. Relations among the cord areas are formulated in terms of consistent labeling. Solutions of the consistent labeling problem give candidates for possible trace routes and a unique route is found by the calculation of a distance index. Experimental results show satisfactory performance of the proposed technique.","PeriodicalId":404447,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IECON'97 23rd International Conference on Industrial Electronics, Control, and Instrumentation (Cat. A method to minimize freewheeling interval, which is able to largely decrease DC-link operation losses and to steadily guarantee soft switching in the wide operation region is proposed. In addition, lossless control of zero voltage duration of the DC-link makes the proposed inverter maintain the advanced PWM capability even under a very low modulation index. Simulation and experiment are performed to verify the validity of the proposed inverter.","PeriodicalId":404447,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IECON'97 23rd International Conference on Industrial Electronics, Control, and Instrumentation (Cat. A linear model of the system is proposed to analyze the changes in observer and speed estimation gains. By computing the trajectories of poles and zeros and the transient responses, the system stability is discussed. This paper presents the design and the implementation of a 3-phase voltage stabilizer using an 11-level voltage source inverter. The voltage source inverter comprises of many identical single-phase inverters. Each inverter as a modular unit has a charged capacitor as its DC source. The number of modular units is determined by the number of voltage levels required. For this project, 5 units per phase are designed which generate 11-levels. Under normal power conditions, the stabilizer is in a floating state with the capacitor fully charged. When a voltage drop is detected at the mains terminals, the stabilizer is activated. The control of the stabilizer is realized by using a TMS320C50 digital signal processor. Optimized switching times for different voltage levels are calculated off-line. Experimental results show the feasibility of this approach.","PeriodicalId":404447,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IECON'97 23rd International Conference on Industrial Electronics, Control, and Instrumentation (Cat. The new actuator consists of a single three-phase stator winding system, a helical air-gap structure and a massive rotor wherein eddy-currents are induced, which can produce a torque additionally to the thrust. Special control methods with superposed rotating and alternating field components are discussed theoretically and experimental results for the stationary properties are given. Both forces are suitable for combined rotary-linear movement in two directions.","PeriodicalId":404447,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IECON'97 23rd International Conference on Industrial Electronics, Control, and Instrumentation (Cat. The first approach enables speed estimation which is independent of parameter variations in the machine. The accuracy of all the schemes that belong to the second group is however strongly affected by parameter variations. The impact of iron loss on operation of vector controlled induction machines has been examined in detail for the drives that do possess a speed sensor. The aim of this paper is to examine the impact of iron loss on accuracy of speed estimation in sensorless rotor flux oriented induction machines. The scheme elaborated in the paper is the well-known MRAC based method that relies on the mathematical model of an induction machine. Error in speed estimation is evaluated on the basis of experimentally identified iron loss for a particular machine in the speed range from zero up to twice the rated speed, in steady-state operation. It is shown that the omission of iron loss representation in the speed estimator leads to a typical speed estimation error of two to three RPM in the base speed region (for a four pole 50 Hz machine) and that the speed estimation error increases in the field-weakening region, reaching eleven RPM at twice the rated speed with rated torque command. The results of the paper show that the speed estimation error due to iron loss is comparable with speed estimation errors due to other parameter variation effects.","PeriodicalId":404447,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IECON'97 23rd International Conference on Industrial Electronics, Control, and Instrumentation (Cat.
