As in the past, the media of first drawing and then photography were adopted to document historical places, objects, and cultures. Thus, today's virtual heritage products are beginning to serve these functions, but is the VR-based content that is being created really taking advantage of the medium? Who is creating the content? Who is the audience? Are the creators and audiences working together in fruitful ways? Pretty pictures alone will not convince users that virtual heritage (VH) is worth the time, personnel, and expense needed to build credible virtual worlds. The VH industry can move and (considering the power that VH has to document, teach and inspire) should move without delay toward multifunctional historical simulations to suit a diverse audience.","PeriodicalId":404376,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Seventh International Conference on Virtual Systems and Multimedia","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127356282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In collaboration with the UNESCO World Heritage Center and numerous local, regional, and national agencies, a multi-university team explored the use of accessible and inexpensive digital media for the documentation, narration, and communication of \"cultural landscapes\" during a short, focused workshop in the summer of 2000. The workshop model offers an inexpensive vehicle for cultural and natural site managers across the globe to utilize digital media in the management, recording, and dissemination of heritage to officials, professionals, and the general public.","PeriodicalId":404376,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Seventh International Conference on Virtual Systems and Multimedia","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125132250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cost of this isolation is a suspension of the perception of cause and effect. Without cause and effect, we cannot reliably link our actions to their effects on our environment. I present design considerations for a project which displays the causal relation between humans and their environment. This project, called Oxygen Flute is a hybrid system, which combines a physical structure, dynamic virtual information technology and real time computer music to enhance the perception of the CO/sub 2/ cycle and the causal relation between human respiration, air quality, and plant life. The system aims to present an immersive, transparent relation between users and their environment. This transparent relation is perhaps a way to overcome cultural dispositions, and to perceive that human life is by no means self-sustaining, but rather dependent on a dense net of supporting natural processes.","PeriodicalId":404376,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Seventh International Conference on Virtual Systems and Multimedia","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115485600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the author describes a methodology for combining both types of photographic VR within a photographically-textured polygonal VR environment, using freely available tools and the non-commercial VRML language. This hybrid approach is useful as a way of combining a number of photographically-captured objects within a context, for instance showing a collection of artefacts within the environment where they were discovered, incorporating media and interactivity, while delivering the great convenience and cost saving of image based VR.","PeriodicalId":404376,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Seventh International Conference on Virtual Systems and Multimedia","volume":"61 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124324930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To move a robot arm at a slave system as an operator intends, he manipulates a force feedback device (PHANTOM) at a master system while watching a television image of the robot arm taken at the slave system. A force torque sensor (FTS: a force torque sensor and FT data: the output data of FTS) is mounted on a robot hand, and the output is conveyed to the PHANToM. This system gives a user the feeling as if he were directly operating the remote robot arm. However the following problems occur in operation. (1) The difference between the state of a robot and that indicated in a television (2) The delay caused the output of FTS to the PHANToM (3) It is difficult to synchronize the TV image with the force returned with a PHANToM. We propose two techniques to solve these problems, and show their effects in detail.","PeriodicalId":404376,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Seventh International Conference on Virtual Systems and Multimedia","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124489089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
