But the packet latencies with AODV can be very high, >100 ms on average, especially when the network load is low and node mobility is high. To mitigate this effect, we have enhanced AODV with a proactive technique, which lets receiver nodes broadcast periodic 'beacons' throughout the network to keep routing entries in other nodes current. Using simulations we show that beacons reduce the packet latencies by a factor of 2-3. The routing packets transmitted are also reduced as the beacons obviate the need for some route discovery processes.","PeriodicalId":404304,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference. Previous studies have shown that single-user systems employing n-element transmit and receive arrays can achieve a capacity proportional to n, assuming independent Rayleigh fading between pairs of antenna elements. We explore the capacity of dual-antenna-array systems via theoretical analysis and simulation experiments. We present expressions for the asymptotic growth rate of capacity with n for both independent and correlated fading cases; the latter is derived under some assumptions about the fading correlation structure. We show that the capacity growth is linear in n in both the independent and correlated cases, but the growth rate is smaller in the latter case. We compare the predictions of our asymptotic theory to the capacities of channels simulated using ray tracing, and find good agreement even for moderate n, i.e., 1/spl les/n/spl les/16. Our results address both the cases when the transmitter does and does not know the channel realization.","PeriodicalId":404304,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference. Wireless access systems enable one to incrementally roll out infrastructure and rapidly turn up new services such as high-speed Internet access and video distribution. In this paper, implementation challenges toward an adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) point-to-multipoint outdoor broadband wireless access system are examined. The frequency band tackled is located at 10.5 GHz but the results can be applied to other areas of the spectrum as well. The targeted bit rates go up to 34 Mbps, for varying channel conditions. Dynamic time division multiple access/time division duplex (DTDMA/TDD) is selected for the medium access scheme, since TDD requires only a single unpaired frequency band (thus reducing the cost for purchasing licensed spectrum), while TDMA distributes the number of slots per uplink or downlink direction according to the traffic that each direction has to transmit. In addition, OFDM techniques provide a robust behavior in the presence of multipath fading. This paper focuses on the wireless data link control (W-DLC) layer, addressing the system protocol stack and all W-DLC sublayers, entities and functions, and providing a framework that will be beneficial for a licensed outdoor wireless system.","PeriodicalId":404304,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference. Previous research on this subject has been focusing on the design of proxy servers as well as the functions that these servers provide. We study the placement of proxy servers, especially the approach of incorporating proxies into cellular networks, which allows better, faster, and more secure proxy services. We discuss various factors that must be considered when placing proxies inside cellular networks, including the information requirements of the proxies, the network requirements for supporting the proxy functions, and mobility management. Using GPRS as an example, we lay out a procedure for adding proxies into data transmission path in cellular networks.","PeriodicalId":404304,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference. The main purpose of MR ARQ is to get efficient use of radio resources at receiver by reducing number of acknowledgements. We analyze MR ARQ and compare its performance with selective repeat (SR) ARQ in the wireless fading channel environment. Based on analysis, it is shown that we need to increase the size of buffer for MR ARQ to hold data packets for the period of acknowledgement, and need to increase the size of buffer much more for MR ARQ in the noisier channel environment. It is shown that as the length of period for acknowledgement is increased, we need to increase the size of buffer much more for the saturated throughput. Increasing the size of buffer is needed for the efficient use of radio resources to reduce number of acknowledgements.","PeriodicalId":404304,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference. Customer interarrival times are exponentially distributed with a rate that depends on the current system occupancy, and customers must be successful in the contention phase in order to obtain access to the service phase. There are C contention slots in each contention period, which are chosen at random by the contending customers, and success is determined by a capture model. Each contention period is followed by S service periods. Customers who have already contended successfully receive service on a FCFS basis, and service times are drawn independently from a discrete distribution. We model the system as a Markov renewal process embedded at departure service times. We solve the model and then compute the equilibrium distributions of the number of customers in the system at an arbitrary point in time and at customer arrival epochs. Finally, we give numerical examples that show the effects of contention on system performance.","PeriodicalId":404304,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference. Our Mobile RSVP protocol provides an advanced resource reservation mechanism in a wireless cellular environment. Furthermore, we propose the dynamic resource sharing algorithm to make better use of network resources in those cells, where advance reservation takes place. We analyze our proposed protocol and the corresponding dynamic resource sharing algorithm by simulating the behavior of distinct call types in a single cell. We also investigate the effect of user mobility behavior on the performance of future resource reservation protocols with mobility support. By analyzing the pattern of user mobility as well as possible application priorities, we hope to be able to put constraints to the scope of service provision.","PeriodicalId":404304,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference. When variable bit-rate users are statistically identical, conventional power control (uniform) is used to guarantee fairness of service to the users in the system by avoiding the near-far problem, However, when the probability of a user being active is high, the system might experience a low throughput due to increased congestion in the network. In such a situation, it may be possible to improve the system throughput by employing non-uniform power control policies. These power control schemes may be designed to offer the same quality of service to each of the individual users. Analysis of various power control policies are examined in this work.","PeriodicalId":404304,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference. Conference Record (Cat. The breakdown point is computed for a mixture noise model. Noise rather than interference is shown to be the primary obstacle in achieving good performance when the signal power is low. This paper outlines the work carried out in InfoGate, a European research and development project under the ESPRIT programme, that designed and implemented a multiservice residential gateway platform. A residential gateway (also called residential concentrator, residential hub, residential communications controller or integrated access device) is, in the most simple terms, a bridge between the access network (or the local loop) which connects to the core network gateways (e.g. Internet) end the home local network. The paper describes the service requirements and focuses on the wireless access and indoor interfaces.","PeriodicalId":404304,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference.
