Conservation of energy is an effective and economical solution to cater the increasing electricity demand as compared to electricity generation. Increasing generation has a profound impact on the excessive emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs). In this paper, Light Emitting Diode (LED) lamps are presented as an efficient DC loads to influence the electricity demand curves. The application of the tool is carried out on the monthly demand curves obtained from National Electric Power Regulation Authority (NEPRA) of Pakistan. A considerable decline in the monthly power demand is observed by implementing the suggested solution which is equivalent to a large power generation plant. The solution presented is also an effective way to cater the gap between electricity supply and demand. The proposed recommendation for modern lighting can solve the power issue by taking care of environment contamination and would be a vital step towards a pollution free, ecological planet. Similar effects can be observed for other efficient DC loads.","PeriodicalId":403316,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 2nd Annual Southern Power Electronics Conference (SPEC)","volume":"227 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131329799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is a patented technique and it has been well established with various proof-of-concept prototypes showing its efficiency advantage in the range of a factor of 1.33 to 3 along with the other excellent linear characteristics such as low noise and high slew rate. As a better way of utilizing this approach to match multiple voltage rail applications such as mobile battery operated products, processor-based systems, automotive systems, and data centers, a further extension to the technique called Dual-Output Supercapacitor Assisted Low Dropout Regulator (DO-SCALDO) has been suggested. It uses feedback of the grid current and capacitor voltage and is derived as an equivalent to the capacitor current feedback active damping method. A co-design procedure for the grid current controller with the proposed hybrid active damping method is presented. The robustness, system bandwidth and harmonic rejection are studied. The proposed method is applied to a single grid connected converter with variable grid inductance to investigate its ability to damp different system resonance frequencies and its effectiveness is verified via frequency domain analysis and time domain simulation.","PeriodicalId":403316,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 2nd Annual Southern Power Electronics Conference (SPEC)","volume":"402 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122787298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Under partial shading or any non-uniform conditions on the photovoltaic plant, several power maxima may arise. Conventional perturb and observe and other classical maximum power point tracking algorithms are capable of tracking a local maximum, but can not guarantee to operate at the global maximum. A solution to such limitation is to perform a scan of the photovoltaic characteristic periodically in order to ensure operation at the global maximum. However, such a scan generates high output power variations that may not comply with grid codes. In order to overcome this drawback and allow a global scan for maximum power point tracking purposes, this paper proposes a hybrid photovoltaic system with an ultra-capacitor-based energy storage system. Simulations are provided to validate the proposed configuration. Results show that the photovoltaic scan allows operation at the global maximum power point, while the ultra-capacitor bank manages the power transient so that the power output fluctuation is kept within grid-code limits.","PeriodicalId":403316,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 2nd Annual Southern Power Electronics Conference (SPEC)","volume":"795 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131774207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If it is desired to implement large set-point changes, then the manipulated inputs can get saturated during the transients and the closed-loop performance can deteriorate if no provision is made for anti-reset windup. To deal with the reset windup caused by the input saturation, an anti-windup compensator is introduced within the IMC framework, which consists of a first order filter that becomes active only after input saturation occurs. Tuning guidelines are provided for selecting the filter parameters. The efficacy of the modified IMC method has been verified using MATLAB simulations of a boost type dc-dc converter. To assess feasibility of integrating the proposed approach with real applications, hardware experiments were carried out using an FPGA based module (NI-CompactRIO-9104) on the prototype boost converter. The simulations studies as well as the experimental evaluations clearly indicate that, with reference to the input behaviour obtained without anti-windup compensation, the input quickly desaturates when the modified scheme is employed and this leads to significant improvement in the closed-loop responses.","PeriodicalId":403316,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 2nd Annual Southern Power Electronics Conference (SPEC)","volume":"109 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121241959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two capacitors series in the high-voltage side of proposed converter are used for voltage division. The divided voltages are then discharged to and charged from the low-voltage side by a modified two-phase interleaved buck-boost converter, respectively. Due to stacking architecture of the proposed converter, high bidirectional voltage conversion ratio with low voltage stresses on power switches can be achieved by the proposed converter with reasonable duty ratio. Besides, a smart phase-rotating control scheme can be integrated into the proposed converter to improve the conversion efficiency at light loads. A prototype circuit with a voltage of 200V in high-voltage side, a voltage of 24V in low-voltage side and a rated output power of 500W is implemented to verify the performance of proposed bidirectional DC-DC converter. Experimental results show that the maximum conversion efficiencies, about 93.40% and 93.86%, for step-down mode and step-up mode, respectively along with lower voltage stresses on power switches can be achieved. Besides, a conversion efficiency improvement of 5.42% can be accomplished for the proposed converter with smart phase-rotating control scheme under 25W.","PeriodicalId":403316,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 2nd Annual Southern Power Electronics Conference (SPEC)","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127210241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even though, cold-ironing is not new to the shipping industry only recently it received more attention, mainly due to strict emission regulations. When a ship receives shore power, its emissions can be eliminated and thus cold-ironing is becoming a popular service sought by ships that berth at emission controlled ports. Generally, the shore power connection is available only at berth and thus emissions from the ships that are anchored in and around the port is still a significant issue. This paper proposes a floating power platform for ‘Mobile Cold-ironing’ of anchored ships. In the proposed system, a fuel cell — battery hybrid system is used as the source. Efficacy of the proposed system in supplying dynamic loads is verified with simulation results.","PeriodicalId":403316,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 2nd Annual Southern Power Electronics Conference (SPEC)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123719597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is expected that this arrangement will improve the power density and reliability of the whole system. The challenges include limited available space, high temperature, affordability, high power density and an exceedingly high reliability requirement. The segmented rotor flux switching machine is one of the promising topologies that are suitable for this application. The objective of this article is to investigate quantitatively the influence of several design parameters on the electromagnetic performance. The design parameters include, the excitation type, stator split ratio, segmented rotor length and load advance angle. Back EMF, cogging torque, average torque, torque ripple and magnetic force are considered to be the key evaluation criteria and are used to guide the search for the optimized design. The material discussed in this paper may be helpful to provide insight in the selection of key design parameters in the direct shaft-line gas turbine generators.","PeriodicalId":403316,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 2nd Annual Southern Power Electronics Conference (SPEC)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125694780","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, wireless power transfer attracts attention as a promising industry. As for wireless power transfer, inductance is changed in accordance with power transmission distance or surrounding environment. Similarly as for IH, inductance and resistance as equivalent circuit parameters is changed in accordance with heating temperature. For this reason, a transmission efficiency and a heating efficiency is lowered with changing these parameters. Therefore the power supply for these applications with resonance tracking control is proposed in this study. The feature of this power supply is the ability to track resonance at constant frequency. In this paper, an analytical study of the proposed power supply is performed and the results derived from analysis are presented.","PeriodicalId":403316,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 2nd Annual Southern Power Electronics Conference (SPEC)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116522998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
