The problem is formulated as a semi-Markov decision process (SMDP) with constraints on the blocking probabilities and signal-to-interference ratio (SIR). The objective is to find a CAC policy which maximizes the throughput while still satisfying these quality-of-service (QoS) constraints. To solve for a near optimal CAC policy, an online decision-making algorithm based on an actor-critic with temporal-difference learning from a paper is modified by parameterizing the reward signal to deal with the QoS constraints. In this paper, based on a representative sensor network system for lost hiker localization in wilderness areas, we study the problem of sensor/access-point deployment in constrained environments with the goal of minimizing localization uncertainty. We first present theoretical analysis of the problems for different problem attributes. Although the video quality experienced by users depends on spatial (edges, colors, ...) and more considerably on temporal (movement speed, direction, ...) features of the video sequence, most of the proposed methods are based on spatial features. This paper presents a new reference free approach for quality estimation based on motion character. The character of motion is determined by the amount and direction of the motion between two scene changes. In this paper, the design of a universal reference-free video quality metric is presented. The design of the quality metric is based on content adaptive parameters, allowing for content dependent video quality estimation. The performance of the proposed universal metric was evaluated with various video content types and compressions settings. The proposed maximum-likelihood receiver results to be \"partially coherent\", because it is optimized to work without any information on the path gains, but only on the knowledge of the arrivals' times of the transmitted signals' replicas. The performance of the proposed transceiver are evaluated via three suitable versions of the Union-Chernoff bound related to several indoor and outdoor propagation scenarios, and through such limits we introduce a novel family of unitary orthogonal space-time block codes (e.g., the space-time OPPM (STOPPM) codes), that are able to attain the maximum of diversity and coding gains","PeriodicalId":403213,"journal":{"name":"2007 2nd International Symposium on Wireless Pervasive Computing","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121925035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

UWCs with a conventional mechanism are assumed to maintain the power-on state of multiple communication modules to communicate with each other at any time. This 'always-on' operation wastes the energy of UWCs and decreases the lifetime of UWCs. To reduce the energy consumption in UWCs, we propose an energy-aware communication module selection scheme through ZigBee paging in UWCs. The energy-aware communication module selection scheme predicts energy consumption for transmitting the given data and selects a communication module which consumes the minimum energy. A ZigBee paging mechanism is used to turn on or off the corresponding communication modules when they have data to send or no data to send, respectively. Experimental results show that the proposed energy-aware communication module selection scheme through ZigBee paging reduces energy consumption by 6%, 93%, and 97% for WLAN, Bluetooth, and ZigBee, respectively, compared with the conventional mechanism","PeriodicalId":403213,"journal":{"name":"2007 2nd International Symposium on Wireless Pervasive Computing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127422728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main advantage of EM-MQAM is an ability to transmit a multilevel 2-D MQAM constellation as a constant envelope signal. It makes EM-MQAM a preferred technique for application in multipath fading channel since no amplitude discrimination in the receiver is needed. The transmission bandwidth and BER performance of EM-MQAM have been analyzed. Despite of the fact that EM-MQAM requires as twice as much of the transmit bandwidth compared to the conventional MQAM, it provides reasonable trade-off between transmit bandwidth and BER performance. Furthermore, EM-MQAM requires just 1 dB of extra transmit power if the order of original MQAM increases fourfold.","PeriodicalId":403213,"journal":{"name":"2007 2nd International Symposium on Wireless Pervasive Computing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129979356","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, interference problems for spectrum-agile networks are addressed by allowing the networks to dynamically change channel. For insight into dynamic channel-change strategies, we model the networks as autonomous players in a multistage non-cooperative game-theoretic model. Here the networks are assumed to be highly interfering, i.e., when two or more networks exist on a single channel they cannot successfully carry traffic. Each network seeks to minimize its time to find a clear channel. The game-theoretic analysis reflects the motivations and choices of independent, rational, selfish decision makers that do not trust one another. We analyze the game-theoretic solutions appropriate for an untrusted environment, and compare the results with socially optimal decisions that would maximize the expected benefit of all coexisting networks in a trusted environment.","PeriodicalId":403213,"journal":{"name":"2007 2nd International Symposium on Wireless Pervasive Computing","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130534469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To accomplish these tasks, it is of the utmost importance that these measurements are reliable and repeatable. The measurements were collected with three different drive-test systems used in common engineering practice.
