It is widely recognized that appropriate control laws make these converters more advantageous than the traditional line commutated ones. They can play a versatile role by properly controlling active and reactive powers between electrical networks, improving the dynamic performances of the whole system. Besides this is more and more motivated by the wide spreading penetration of renewable resources. In this paper after a few references to basic concepts, a possible control strategy of VSC-HVDC transmission system is discussed. With respect to a two-area system with AC-DC link, a combined control law is investigated for improving inertial and primary frequency response. The control law is based upon the equivalent HVDC tie link synchronization coefficient which allows determining the reference value of the AC voltage reference angles of the converters. A damping action is further added for improving the power swings damping. Defining 1 the number of levels, two cases have been considered: t=65 and t=257. While operating at the fundamental switching frequency, the algorithm returns those solutions, expressed in terms of switching angles to be applied to power devices, which allow complete elimination of a subset of low order harmonics and the mitigation of others. In the context of the world's energy transition from fossil fuel-based to higher and higher renewable energy sources power generation, the HVAC-to-HVDC overhead line conversion is an option that deserves to be considered. In fact, without withdrawing further land resources, it is possible to increase the transmitted power significantly by exploiting the existing corridors. In this paper, an overview of the main issues to be considered when converting a HVAC lines into a HVDC one is presented, by describing technical, economical and environmental features in order to achieve the maximum benefits from this conversion. Several research groups have investigated dielectric phenomena that occur in the insulation of HVDC cables and accessories that accelerate aging and reduce the reliability of this technology over time. Unlike in HVAC cables, under HVDC stress, the distribution of the electric field inside the insulation layer depends not only on the applied voltage but also on the temperature distribution and on other factors related to manufacturing such as the presence of impurities. Reaching local and transient electric field peaks can enhance the onset of Partial Discharges (PDs) which can lead to premature aging of the insulation. As demonstrated by several studies, the achievement of electric field peaks that can exceed the inception level for partial discharges is more likely in joints. This is due both to the greater probability that a defect is incorporated in two different dielectric layers, and to the greater thickness which determines a higher temperature drop. In this paper, the occurrence of PDs inception conditions in a void inside an HVDC joint during a Transient Over Voltage (TOV) event is investigated by means of FEM simulations. It is well known that the HVDC-MMC configuration needs surge arresters to reduce the transient overvoltages on the DC cable system. This work highlights how the voltage perturbations on the HVDC-LCC link due to the faults on the HVDC-MMC link are not negligible and how a reduction of transient overvoltage is necessary for both the HVDC systems.
