This chapter reminds us that mental illness is constructed in the same way and by those same interests. It should serve as no surprise, then, that those diagnosed as mentally ill are far more likely to go to jail or prison than to be consigned to a clinic, hospital, or asylum. In this chapter the causes for criminalizing abnormal behaviour are located not in the organic or medical realm but in the realm of social injustice and the persecution of the prophetic. Thus, prison has become in many respects the new sacred space for those with a piercing, and hence unwelcome, social vision.","PeriodicalId":402882,"journal":{"name":"Criminology and Public Theology","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124407733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this introductory chapter crossover between the two subjects is highlighted as an opportunity to critique retributive punishment and present new thinking on the place of hope, mercy and restoration in secular criminal justice settings. The focus is on learning from Christian theology although it is acknowledged that there may be much to learn from other faith traditions as well. The focus for this chapter is the space between public criminology and public theology. The rest of the volume is then introduced.","PeriodicalId":402882,"journal":{"name":"Criminology and Public Theology","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114248196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Whilst an object of scorn for Nietzsche in the death of God debate, Paul has re-emerged as a locus of inquiry within the religious turn in continental philosophy and the ‘death of the death of God discourse.’ This chapter, in examining some potential relationships between philosophy, theology and criminology, addresses the question of what Paul’s own experience of grace offers in addressing the aftermath of crime. Further, it is argued that an analysis of Pauline theology and its context challenges dominant and punitive narratives and is an essential resource for critical criminology to speak at a collective level.","PeriodicalId":402882,"journal":{"name":"Criminology and Public Theology","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126342719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Much Christian theology rests on the projection of guilt and a felt need for punishment. This is especially true of the satisfaction theory. Although retributive assumptions are deeply rooted in Scripture they are not alone. Especially in the teaching of Jesus there are equally profound roots for what today is called restorative justice and the Circles of Support and Accountability through which sex offenders, in particular, are dealt with instantiate this. This grounds a quite different theology of redemption to that implied by satisfaction theory.","PeriodicalId":402882,"journal":{"name":"Criminology and Public Theology","volume":"141 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127329016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In each case, the potential relevance of this teaching to criminal justice in a modern liberal-democratic state is considered. Naturally, Jesus’ teaching and practice were strongly religious in orientation, but the chapter argues that, suitably adapted to remove its specifically faith-based dimensions, the ethics of Jesus has an enduring relevance for the criminal justice policies and practice of contemporary secular states.","PeriodicalId":402882,"journal":{"name":"Criminology and Public Theology","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123301103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
