The development of sacramentaries, pontificals, and rituals presents a rich dialogue between the Roman Rite and the religious experience of a given people. The medieval pontificals, in particular, provide an insight into the fruit born from this dialogue. The \"book of the bishop\" not only contained rites requisite for the local pontiff, but also those that would eventually pass into the book of his priests—the Rituale. This essay examines how the medieval pontificalia helped the Church's liturgy respond to the realities of the day. Special attention is paid to the Pontifical of William Durandus, which served as a template for the Tridentine Pontifical.","PeriodicalId":40281,"journal":{"name":"Antiphon-A Journal for Liturgical Renewal","volume":"26 1","pages":"26 - 44"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42529543","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This argument applies equally to individual parishes and broader—e.g., deanery, diocesan, national, Church-wide—levels. Different, concrete factors influencing church/congregation growth or decline are delineated, and the rationale for applying economic models to thinking about pastoral life is explained. The paper introduces the concept of \"the liturgical long tail,\" and argues for its disproportionate importance for ecclesial vitality.","PeriodicalId":40281,"journal":{"name":"Antiphon-A Journal for Liturgical Renewal","volume":"26 1","pages":"1 - 25"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47118654","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies in the Biblical Typology of the Fathers, trans. Wulstan Hibberd [London: Burns & Oates, 1960]) and his Bible et liturgie: La théologie biblique des sacrements et des fêtes d'après les Pères de l'Église (Paris: Cerf, 1951; The Bible and the Liturgy, trans. Michael A. Mathis [London: Darton, Longman & Todd, 1960]). The former is an examination of the dynamics of typology through a series of case studies. The latter examines typology as the principle of inner coherence between Word and Sacrament in the Church's liturgical life. This short essay, heretofore unavailable in English, offers Daniélou's taxonomy of typology, derived from the case studies, and thus also offers a lens through which better to appreciate both books.","PeriodicalId":40281,"journal":{"name":"Antiphon-A Journal for Liturgical Renewal","volume":"25 1","pages":"332 - 337"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43514941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
