Specifically, 18 variables were collected via the Facebook API for 1728 friendships and used to predict tie strength reported by 90 participants. The resulting model had an accuracy of 65.9% in differentiating between strong and weak ties, and 86.3% in differentiating between very strong and weaker ties. The tie-strength calculation was performed in real time by the application, conferring the key advantage that the result can be instantly used by the live application. We argue this functionality has the potential to enable many novel customization and recommendation scenarios. Furthermore, examining the effect of the use of different Facebook features and types of communication on the perceived tie strength gives a more comprehensive understanding of the concept of tie strength in social media and sheds light on people's use of social network sites.","PeriodicalId":402367,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Panhellenic Conference on Informatics","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127025118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In our study, a maintenance work at ATLAS detector in Large Hadron Collider at European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is considered. Current technology is more or less stand-alone and none of the available technologies are integrated in a fully reliable system. The scientific objectives of this paper are; to demonstrate the basic architecture of the Wireless Personnel Safety System (WPSS) (prototype) and to figure out an advanced platform for augmented and virtual reality technologies for a Personnel Safety System (PSS), including features, methods and tools. The aim is to technically advance and integrate them as part of a PSS to improve safety, reduce errors and decrease the time needed for scheduled or sudden interventions in extreme environments. The research challenges lie in the development of real-time data-transmission, instantaneous analysis of data coming from different inputs, local intelligences in low power embedded systems, interaction with multiple on-site users, complex interfaces, portability and wearability. This study is a part of the EDUSAFE1 project, a Marie Curie ITN project focusing on research into the use of Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) during planned and emergency maintenance in extreme environments.","PeriodicalId":402367,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Panhellenic Conference on Informatics","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116227499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a world of multi-stakeholder information and assets provision on top of millions of real-time interacting and communicating Things, autonomicity is an imperative property and a grand challenge. Autonomic Things will allow systems to self-manage the complexity, the dynamicity and the distribution of the IoT. In order to make Things able to manage themselves and contribute to the global self-management network, we have to empower them with mandatory properties like situational-awareness, knowledge, smartness and social behavior. In this paper we present the approach that the COSMOS project introduces in order to enable Things to evolve and act in a more autonomous way, becoming more reliable and smarter.","PeriodicalId":402367,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Panhellenic Conference on Informatics","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116607952","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two new flip-flop designs are presented for timing error tolerance, which are characterized by low silicon area overhead and power consumption compared to the state of the art Razor flip-flop. The first technique uses a new scan flip-flop, without any additional memory elements, to detect and correct timing errors at the minimum penalty of one clock cycle delay. The second technique is based on a new bit flipping flip-flop for local error detection and correction. In this topology, when a timing error is detected the output of the corresponding flip-flop is complemented for error correction. The proposed techniques and the well known Razor scheme were applied separately in the design of a 32-bit MIPS microprocessor core using a 90nm CMOS technology. Comparisons based on experimental results validate the efficiency of the new topologies with respect to Razor.","PeriodicalId":402367,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Panhellenic Conference on Informatics","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123499647","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed computing structures exploit the threshold-based resistance switching behavior of memristors and of their multi-state composite components. Array-like circuit structures with memristors are designed and their ability to efficiently solve the classic \"bin packing\" problem is verified via a simulation-based validation using a published memristor device model. A fundamental memristive cell which implements a one-dimensional CA rule is described in detail and then employed in a sophisticated two-dimensional array able to execute the \"First-Fit\" (decreasing) bin packing algorithm.","PeriodicalId":402367,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Panhellenic Conference on Informatics","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128124175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the data mining process itself is a cumbersome task, which requires expert knowledge, concerning preprocessing of data, selection of algorithms, appropriate configuration, feature identification and result comprehension. In this paper, the design and development of an expert system attempting to expedite and automate the aforementioned steps is presented and discussed. The resulting prototype platform aims to provide data mining capabilities to users that are unfamiliar with the field of data mining, while at the same time it features a high degree of customization and advanced features, which render it useful to data mining experts for easily experimenting and comparing different configurations and algorithms. For testing and demonstration purposes, the proposed platform is employed on a case study concerning actual medical data.","PeriodicalId":402367,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Panhellenic Conference on Informatics","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132312971","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the latter we employ the kernel k-means algorithm. We evaluated the proposed method using the Test Collections of Reuters-21578, and compared the results using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) Algorithm. The results are encouraging demonstrating that the 3-Gram graph method has much better Recall and F1 score but worse Precision. Further changes that will further improve the results are identified.","PeriodicalId":402367,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Panhellenic Conference on Informatics","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127834947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It constitutes an alternative, quite easy but also powerful programming platform as it allows the development of apps using databases, interactive maps and other advanced concepts and most importantly, you do not have to write code. In this paper we first present how App Inventor works, its limitations and benefits compared to other Android application development environments, and we subsequently report on teacher and students' experiences from using App Inventor as an introductory programming course with senior high school students. The students were able to create mobile apps quite easily either following specified instructions or on their own initiative. Overall, the research conducted using a questionnaire found that App Inventor could make programming enjoyable and accessible to novices, enabling students to develop computing skills and computational thinking. Finally, we discuss possible extensions App Inventor could have as a visual programming environment for mobile application development.","PeriodicalId":402367,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Panhellenic Conference on Informatics","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115635462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
