Instead, her intinerary seemed to be useless, as the title of the book collecting the report of the expedition suggests (1st edition Bompiani, 1981). Un viaggio inutile springs from a double mnemonic filter: the clandestine operation imposed a ban on transcribing travel notes, which Rossanda drafted only on the way back; secondly, eighteen years passed between the experience in Spain and the rewriting of the notes, which took place in 1980. The present work, therefore, aims to explore both the mnemonic devices of Rossanda’s journey and its reception by the Spanish public, also by resorting to the translation of the text (Un viaje inútil, Laia, 1984 and Tirant Humanidades, 2021).\"","PeriodicalId":40223,"journal":{"name":"Caietele Echinox","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47829094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The tale is one of Aub’s apocryphal works. It is in fact a false manuscript written by a crow, who in Le Vernet internment camp studies the human species for the benefit of its own companions. As Aub did during his captivity, the crow notes what he observes and reports the facts in his own way. The result is an anthropological pseudo-reflection written by an unlikely chronicler, whose external point of view gives the real events – personally experienced by Aub, who is the true witness – the status of literary fiction. In this way, Aub speaks about his own experience but not from an autobiographical perspective, and transmits a personal memory that is both individual and collective.\"","PeriodicalId":40223,"journal":{"name":"Caietele Echinox","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42366544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The novel reads like a document and, at the same time, like fiction. Through a complex overlapping and poetic condensation of the most diverse memories, Herta Müller has created a place where she and her readers commemorate all those who perished or were exterminated in dictatorships, labour camps and death camps. This constitutes its richness and also its challenge: how should all these local, regional and national cultural identities be harmonized and integrated, without destroying, but rather conserving and enhancing them? A seminal concept in the investigation of the cultural, literary and artistic representations is “the imaginary” (the equivalent of the French term l’imaginaire), as opposed to the traditional concepts of “imagination” and “fantasy”. Cultural imaginaries express the relations between individuals and groups, their representations of the self and the others, of the geographical and historical milieus, of the planet and the universe.
