Kinetic and equilibrium experiments were performed under different conditions, namely liquid to solid phase ratio and the presence of organic compounds (EDTA, phthalate). The duration of equilibrium experiments was determined based on kinetic experiments, 1 week for calcium-silicate-hydrates and 3 weeks for hydrated cement paste. Equilibrium experiments were evaluated using the distribution ratio R d and sorption isotherms. For both hydrated cement pastes, R d’s in the range 102–103 L kg−1 were found while for calcium-silicate-hydrates the distribution ratio values were an order of magnitude higher under comparable conditions. The difference in the studied cementitious materials was also manifested in the shape of the sorption isotherm, while the behavior of calcium-silicate-hydrates can be fitted linearly and therefore by the K d-model, for hydrated cement paste as more complex cement material it is necessary to use a non-linear isotherm description. The effect of organic matter, represented here by EDTA and phthalate, described by the sorption reduction factor SRF was more apparent for calcium-silicate-hydrates, where its value was always higher than one and reached up to 500. On the contrary, for hydrated cement paste CEM I and CEM III, all determined SRFs were less than 1.","PeriodicalId":400400,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Nuclear Engineering","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116832917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, its parallel performance in the hybrid MPI/OpenMP parallelism is inadequate, especially when running with larger number of threads. In the original Whole-code OpenMP threading hybrid model (WCP) model of the PANDAS-MOC neutron transport code, the hybrid MPI/OpenMP reduction has been determined as the principal issue that restraining the parallel speedup of the multi-level coarse mesh finite difference solver. In this paper, two advanced reduction algorithms are proposed: Count-Update-Wait reduction and Flag-Save-Update reduction, and their parallel performances are examined by the C5G7 3D core. Regarding the parallel speedup, the Flag-Save-Update reduction has attained better results than the conventional hybrid reduction and Count-Update-Wait reduction.","PeriodicalId":400400,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Nuclear Engineering","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132038777","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, apposite management of 99Tc is imperative to control its hazardous radiological impact on humans and other livings. So far, the major strategy implementation has been the solidification and immobilization of 99Tc radioactive waste in various matrices as waste forms and disposal in deep geological repository. However, by passing the time, 99Tc may leach out/solubilize from the waste forms under different geochemical/environmental conditions. In this minireview, we discuss some key contributions towards the solubility of 99Tc and rhenium (Re; a well-known surrogate of 99Tc) from different waste forms. Specifically, we review the solubility of 99Tc from glass, cement, ceramic, and geopolymer waste forms. The final section (conclusion) presents a short summary and future challenges need be addressed to impede the solubility of 99Tc from the designed waste forms. We believe this minireview will be beneficial to provide a significant insight on the solubility of 99Tc from aforementioned waste forms and in the design of robust matrices to minimize/prevent 99Tc migration in various environments.","PeriodicalId":400400,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Nuclear Engineering","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131406920","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Expensive qualification tests are required to validate the thermal and mechanical performance of fuels in normal and accident-scenario operations. Research of surrogate systems with specific properties and characteristics of advanced nuclear fuels can be an effective way to frame the problem, reduce costs, and support the technical development of future research. From this perspective, lanthanide counterparts like mixed oxides of Ce and Nd can provide replica systems for many technological properties of the actual fuels. These ceramic systems can lead to a better understanding of the fundamental irradiation processes responsible for the evolution of their microstructures, the interplay with charge and defect localisation, and the evolution of their mechanical properties. In non-stoichiometric MO2−x binary systems (M = Ce, Pr, and Tb), there is evidence of systematic ordering of vacancies resulting in a deviation from the ideal fluorite structure and the formation of several intermediate fluorite-related phases. Substitution of the 4+ cations with 3+ cations in these systems drives the formation of oxygen vacancies as a charge compensation mechanism. By analogy with MO2−x systems, a variety of similar intermediate phases would also be expected to form in the MO2:Ln2O3 (Ln = La, Nd, Gd … etc). However, in order to achieve chemical homogeneity and charge ordering, prolonged annealing just above the charge ordering transition temperature is required, covering a time-scale determined by the chemical diffusion coefficient. Achieving these conditions with powder metallurgy techniques, commonly employed in literature, is practically impossible. This paper reviews the transport properties and structural features found in these surrogate systems which may be helpful in addressing challenges facing advanced nuclear fuels. We present results of a recent diffraction experiment investigating the structure of neodymium doped ceria synthesised using soft chemical methods. The sample shows a deviation from previous literature as the diffraction data is best described by a monoclinic Ln6O11-type structure (SG P21/c), often referred to as “β phase” in PrO2−x .","PeriodicalId":400400,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Nuclear Engineering","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133350559","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, these studies aim to determine how various processing parameters impact the physical, chemical, and morphological properties of the resulting special nuclear material. By better understanding how these properties relate to the processing parameters, scientists can better contribute to nuclear forensics investigations by quantifying their results and ultimately shortening the forensic timeline. This paper aims to statistically analyze and quantify the relationships that exist between the processing conditions used in these experiments and the various properties of the nuclear end-product by invoking inverse methods. In particular, these methods make use of Bayesian Adaptive Spline Surface models in conjunction with Bayesian model calibration techniques to probabilistically determine processing conditions as an inverse function of morphological characteristics. Not only does the model presented in this paper allow for providing point estimates of a sample of special nuclear material, but it also incorporates uncertainty into these predictions. This model proves sufficient for predicting processing conditions within a standard deviation of the observed processing conditions, on average, provides a solid foundation for future work in predicting processing conditions of particles of special nuclear material using only their observed morphological characteristics, and is generalizable to the field of chemometrics for applicability across different materials.","PeriodicalId":400400,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Nuclear Engineering","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131692344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The vaults would then be backfilled with low strength, high porosity cement-based materials designed to promote a pervasive, alkaline environment in which many of the radioactive species present are sparingly soluble. This work investigates the interaction of strontium with such a backfill under both diffusive and advective conditions given the potential significance of the fission product 90Sr. An important characteristic of the United Kingdom waste inventory is the abundance of organic compounds, including cellulosic materials; consequently, the experiments were repeated with products of alkaline cellulose degradation. Additional experiments were performed at high ionic strength simulating anticipated changes in the salinity of the groundwater. The effective diffusivity (De) of strontium in the absence of the organic compounds ranged between 5.5 × 10−11 and 8.5 × 10−11 m2 s−1, with a distribution coefficient (Rd) of between 2.8 × 10−3 and 3.1 × 10−3 m3 kg−1. The presence of organic compounds and/or an increase of ionic strength enhanced the retardation of strontium. The results indicate that the retention of strontium by hydrated cement paste occurs via a reversible ion exchange mechanism rather than mineralisation and is promoted by decalcification of the calcium silicate hydrate phases.","PeriodicalId":400400,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Nuclear Engineering","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125314878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At present, there are 441 nuclear power reactors in operation that provide approximately 15% of the world’s electricity supply. The average age of reactors in operation is more than 31 years. The total reactor years of operation of all the nuclear power reactors is 19,329. There are 53 nuclear power reactors under construction and 15 of them are in China. Considering climate change pressures and carbon-neutral targets, nuclear energy is still one of the most important alternative sources of energy. In the past two decades, significant research progress has been achieved but more technical demands and challenges are still needing to be solved. In the following part, the author will summarize the progress of technical research and challenges in advanced nuclear reactor design. The discussion is focused on the grand challenges of advanced Generation IV reactor design, small modular reactors, accident fault-tolerant fuel, nuclear reactor severe accident, and digital reactor technology.","PeriodicalId":400400,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Nuclear Engineering","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126851122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accordingly, the construction of a series of Generation IV reactor technologies are being demonstrated, including sodium-cooled, small modular, and molten chloride fast reactors (MCFRs). To date, there are no fully qualified structural materials for constructing MCFRs. A number of commercial structural alloys have been considered for the construction of MCFRs, including alloys from the Inconel and Hastelloy series. Informed qualification of structural materials for the construction of MCFRs in the future can only be ensured by expanding the current fundamental knowledgebase of information pertaining to material performance under environmental stressors relevant to operation of the reactor, including corrosion susceptibility. The purpose of this investigation is to illustrate how a correlative multi-modal electron microscopy characterization approach, including the novel application of focused-ion beam 3D reconstruction capabilities, can elucidate the corrosion mechanism of a candidate structural material Inconel 617 for MCFR in NaCl-MgCl2 eutectic salt at 700°C for 1,000 h. Evidence of intergranular corrosion, Ni and Fe dealloying, and Cr-O enrichment along the grain boundary, which most likely corresponds to Cr2O3, is a phenomenon that has been documented in other Ni-based superalloys exposed to chloride molten salt systems. Additional corrosion products, including the formation of insoluble MgAl2O4, within the porous network produced by the salt attack is a novel observation. In addition, Mo3Si5 and τ2 precipitates are detected in the alloy bulk and are dissolved by the salt. Furthermore, the lack of detection of design γ′ precipitates in Inconel 617 after 1,000 h could indicate that the molten salt corrosion mechanism has indirectly induced a phase transformation of Al2TiNi (τ2) and Ni3(Al,Ti) (γ’) phase. This investigation provides a comprehensive understanding of molten salt corrosion mechanisms in a complex material system such as a commercial structural alloy for applications in MCFRs.","PeriodicalId":400400,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Nuclear Engineering","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126935542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The rapid development of high-performance clusters provides a foundation for the application of massively parallel computing. Most current MOC programs are based on a single-type variable to achieve efficient parallelism, and spatial domain decomposition methods are the most common parallel schemes. However, its parallelism is limited and cannot fully utilize the current state-of-the-art computer resources. To solve this problem, hybrid parallel strategies are implemented in HNET to further expand the parallel degree, improve the speed of computation, and reduce the memory requirement. A hybrid MPI/OpenMP method based on domain decomposition and characteristic rays is proposed for the method of characteristics (MOC). For domain decomposition, the simulation domain is divided into spatial subdomains, with each subdomain handled by different processes. On this basis, the characteristic ray parallelism is implemented taking advantage of the inherent parallelism of the characteristic rays. Meanwhile, the optimization of the hybrid parallel strategy further improves the computation speed by eliminating atomic operations and using private pointer arrays and other techniques. In addition, in the framework of generalized equivalence theory (GET) based two-level coarse mesh finite difference method (CMFD), there is also a certain time consumption in solving CMFD linear system. Hence, for CMFD, a hybrid MPI/OpenMP method based on domain decomposition and secondary domain decomposition can be used. Using the secondary domain decomposition method, each subdomain is divided into sub-subdomains, with each sub-subdomain handled by threads, which allows CMFD to utilize the resources of characteristic ray parallelism in MOC, and also increases the speed of CMFD computation. Numerical results show that for both steady-state and transient calculations, the hybrid MPI/OpenMP in HNET can further expand the parallelism and accelerate the computation. It can take full use of parallel resources and achieve large-scale parallelism.","PeriodicalId":400400,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Nuclear Engineering","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132837528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
