We investigate the performance of several linear MIMO transceiver architectures of comparatively low complexity, since non-linear schemes of high complexity (e.g., maximum likelihood detection) appear infeasible with large numbers of transmit and/or receive antennas. The focus of our investigation lies on the impact of spatial antenna correlation on the achievable rate of the considered schemes. We derive achievable rate upper bounds that facilitate interpretation and explanation of performance losses observed with increasing antenna correlation and with growing number of antennas and spatially multiplexed users. We identify favourable combinations of low complexity transmitter/receiver filters and show that the impact of antenna correlation strongly depends on the applied transceiver architecture.","PeriodicalId":399247,"journal":{"name":"2016 13th IEEE Annual Consumer Communications & Networking Conference (CCNC)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131526648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reliable and scalable dissemination mechanism is required in practical multi-hop networks. Cooperative communication is a new scheme to improve communication performance to realize a reliable dissemination mechanism. However, high mobility networks have a big issue for autonomous control for cooperative communication. Additionally, conventional cooperative schemes cannot reduce packet collisions even if packet collisions are a big degradation factor of performance in dense multi-hop networks. We have discussed a new cooperative communication scheme that employs Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM). Our scheme can improve communication performance and reduce packet collisions based on distributed control matter. Our advance evaluation has shown a good potential of the proposed scheme to improve communication performance in multi-hop network simulations. On the contrary, the feasibility of the proposed scheme with a real hardware device was not shown. This paper evaluates the feasibility of our original cooperative communication scheme on IEEE 802.11a standard devices. Almost all conventional cooperative communication schemes require a special physical layer and a media access control mechanism. We have focused on a characteristic of OFDM, where a receiver can demodulate multiple signals within a guard interval period. The experimental evaluation has been performed with software defined radio devices (USRP B200). We have implemented multiple transmitters, a receiver and a fading simulator for each transmitter with two USRP B200 devices. The results can show that the proposed scheme works well on IEEE 802.11a standard devices and improves communication performance in practical situations. Hence, the proposed scheme will be a new candidate of cooperative communication mechanisms that can employ general consumer devices and can realize effective dissemination mechanism for multi-hop networks.","PeriodicalId":399247,"journal":{"name":"2016 13th IEEE Annual Consumer Communications & Networking Conference (CCNC)","volume":"295 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132804723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose Content Name-based Real-time Streaming (NRTS) to enhance the basic concept and implementation of CCN in order to improve streaming quality. NRTS utilizes “symbolic interest,” which eliminates segment identification, and “content-name-based streaming,” which enables per-content (instead of per-packet) streaming and multicasting using a rate control scheme based on network conditions. NRTS is more suitable for high-performance delay-sensitive real-time applications than the original CCN architecture. It avoids the generation of bursty interests and the need for complex operations such as setting the pipeline size. The results from the experiments conducted using simulations and testbeds show that NRTS attains higher throughput and scalability than the original CCN architecture.","PeriodicalId":399247,"journal":{"name":"2016 13th IEEE Annual Consumer Communications & Networking Conference (CCNC)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131089846","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method is user-centric and does not incur much signaling overhead, while performance optimization can be achieved without inter-AP coordination. Simulation results have been presented to show that the proposed solution can improve load balancing and have higher average throughput for 10% worst users as well as maintain the maximal total system throughput. Our evaluation also suggests that the location-awareness of users considered in the proposed solution plays an important role to improve the performance.","PeriodicalId":399247,"journal":{"name":"2016 13th IEEE Annual Consumer Communications & Networking Conference (CCNC)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116036736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, commercial firewalls, such as Juniper Networks and Cisco ASA firewall devices, are mainly designed to be used by networking and security professionals, are not very appropriate for the academia environment, and lack simplicity. In addition, commercial firewalls are usually considered high-cost hardware devices. However, academic institutions usually have tight budget and few financial resources for purchasing networking and security devices for their laboratories. To overcome the aforementioned limitation of commercial firewalls, an educational firewall hardware device, called Edu-Firewall, is discussed and demonstrated. Edu-Firewall main objectives are to offer advanced educational security functions that are not commonly available in current commercial firewalls, and an easy-to-use friendly graphical interface to configure the firewall and manipulate the filtering rules. In addition, Edu-Firewall's objective is to offer an affordable educational device, compared to the available commercial firewall devices. Edu-Firewall allows students to implement hands-on lab exercises on firewalls and better anatomize network traffic filtering concepts and firewall configuration, and contributes to enhance students' hands-on security skills.","PeriodicalId":399247,"journal":{"name":"2016 13th IEEE Annual Consumer Communications & Networking Conference (CCNC)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122457616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A limitation of existing real-time protocols is that they do not support mobility. This paper presents the development of a real-time network composed of a multi-hop infrastructure, and mobile nodes that associate with infrastructure nodes as they move. Once a mobile node joined the network, its real-time communication is guaranteed irrespective to the number and mobility pattern of mobile nodes. To develop this network, we propose Mobility-Aware Scheduling Algorithm (MASA), which benefits from new transmission scheduling approaches that cleverly combine potential packet transmissions to increase real-time capacity. We have developed a realistic trace-based simulator to evaluate the performance of MASA against two baseline algorithms. Experimental results indicate that MASA increases the number of admitted mobile nodes by 7× and 1.6×, and extends the network lifetime by 110% and 30%, compared to the baselines.","PeriodicalId":399247,"journal":{"name":"2016 13th IEEE Annual Consumer Communications & Networking Conference (CCNC)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114343281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There exist several forms of uncertainty, including channel conditions, packet traffic, and spectrum occupancy of users across channels. This uncertainty is further aggravated by delays (such as propagation delays observed over satellite links) that make spectrum-efficient communication a challenging task. A robust game theoretic framework is developed for dynamic spectrum access (DSA) management over multiple channels. Cognitive functionalities employed in the game solution include selecting channels for data transmission and performing power control at each user to sustain target rates. By considering random utility functions, the game engine based on regret minimization provides low complexity and fast solutions compared to traditional game solutions based on expected utility maximization. Detailed numerical results with comparison to benchmark schemes (the ideal case and the random case where users have perfect or no knowledge on channel availability, respectively) are provided to show the effectiveness of robust game theory-enabled approach.","PeriodicalId":399247,"journal":{"name":"2016 13th IEEE Annual Consumer Communications & Networking Conference (CCNC)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129158830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
