The frequency range from 75 GHz (4mm wavelength) to 300 GHz (1mm wavelength) is covered in octave bandwidths. OptiguideTM Gaussian beam waveguide can handle multiple polarizations, and can be adapted to handle multiple spatial modes as well. To date, we have developed 3- and 4-port directional couplers, attenuators, isolators, and circulators. Polarization processing components include grids which can act as polarization diplexers or analyzers, half-wave plates, and quarter-wave plates. The modular approach readily lends itself to configuring of systems to provide a wide range of functions. The stripe directions of the two striped polarizing reflectors are made slightly different and the reflectance is varied according to the relative angle of two stripe directions. The optimization of reflection-finesse for frequency measurements is achieved by adjusting the relative angle. The field distribution of TE10 indicates the difficulty of peniotron's realization in the waveguide. After comparing the fields of TE10 and TE30 with that of TE10 and TE30 rectangular waveguide modes, nonlinear calculations have been carried out on models of large-orbit gyrotron oscillators with a ridged resonator or a rectangular one. It has been studied that the transverse fields affect the efficiency of the gyrotron at the fundamental or the third cyclotron harmonic. The method is suitable for studying the average bulk-sample dielectric properties as well as inhomogeneities on the dimensional scale of a wavelength. Other significant advantages of the method include: thermal isolation of the sample from the measurement apparatus, minimum sample preparation requirements, and convenience for screening a large number of samples in relatively short time periods. With one diagnostic beam a simultaneous, but independent, measure of the bulk ion temperature and alpha particle parameters can be made. From the infrared measurements a binding energy of 28.5meV was inferred, in agreement with photoluminescence measurements. The effects of confinement are evident in shifts to progressively higher frequencies of the dominant transitions as the well width is decreased from 200Å to 100Å. The magnetic field dependence of the observed transitions has been investigated between 0 and 9.0T at temperatures between 4.2 and 30K for the bulk sample and 200Å well width sample. It is found that the external signal need be present only during the initial stages of the pulsed oscillator buildup. It is also noted that the oscillation is not phase locked, due to the low input power level. From these two facts it is seen that priming is the mechanism responsible for the mode control effect.
