Subsequently, anesthesia providers are susceptible to ionizing radiation exposure in the workplace.</div></div><div><h3>Purpose</h3><div>The purpose of this pilot study was to assess anesthesia providers’ compliance with radiation safety precautions within the operating rooms at 3 Mid-Atlantic suburban hospitals.</div></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><div>The researchers observed anesthesia personnel over a 2-week period. Education regarding recommended safety precautions was then provided to anesthesia personnel, and an additional 2-week postintervention observation period was conducted to assess whether radiation safety practices changed.</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>Before the intervention, 19 (82.6%) study participants were compliant with radiation safety practices, and nearly all participants (n = 22, 95.7%) were compliant postintervention. Some of the issues include exceeding the weight limits of imaging equipment, motion artifacts due to increased exposure factors requiring prolonged exposure time, insufficient coverage of the image receptor, and potential patient embarrassment. Each health-care provider is responsible for ensuring fair and unbiased patient care. A review of the literature has identified a divide between bedside clinicians and nursing faculty resulting in the separation of academic educators from current clinical practices. Recently updated professional recommendations allow the expansion of the RN role in supervising and treating contrast reactions.</div></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><div>Forty-six radiology nurses and 5 providers participated in simulated contrast reactions. Time to recognition and treatment were recorded. Simulation was assessed via a validated tool, and RN confidence was measured with presurveys and postsurveys.</div></div><div><h3>Interventions</h3><div>Feasibility of a symptom-driven assessment tool and RN protocol to manage contrast reaction until physician arrival were evaluated.</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>Time from recognition of reaction to treatment was significantly longer using an RN protocol (difference = 102, 95% confidence interval: (64, 140), p value &lt;.001), although not clinically significant. Presurvey and postsurveys demonstrated increased RN confidence in 10 measures, and a validated tool found 85% of responses to simulation favorable.</div></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><div>Treating contrast reactions via RN protocol may be clinically useful for managing severe contrast reactions when a physician is not immediately available.
