We illus-trate how data gathered by wearable devices can identify situations of cognitive-dissonance and may be combined with additional contextual information to identify safety related hazards. Our application is designed not only to alert on safety hazards but also to provide resolutions in cases of explicit regulation violations. Finally, we describe future directions to add customized resolutions based on gradual learning of the individual preferences.","PeriodicalId":397633,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd International Workshop on Mobile Development Lifecycle","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115214875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike Web applications, which delegate most of the business logic to the server and use the client side for the presentation logic, mobile apps are client intensive. Another crucial difference is that the client side of Web applications is typically written using a combination of platform-independent Web languages, whereas most mobile apps have native clients written in platform-specific languages. Though nativity hinders the portability of mobile apps across different platforms and even different devices inside the same platform, it enables smooth high-fidelity experience, high performance and compliance with the platform's UI style---requirements that can only be satisfied natively. The main cost, beyond the initial coding of a mobile app, is to maintain its different variants in the presence of updates. Indeed, mobile code is typically updated frequently, with bug fixes and new features integrated into each new version. In the enterprise setting, these new features often revolve around security, analytics and Mobile App Management (MAM). This paper presents Enceladus, an app-level instrumentation framework that addresses these high-maintenance costs by transparently enriching any mobile enterprise app with new analytics, security and MAM capabilities not otherwise present in the original app source code. With Enceladus, the mobile app lifecycle is significantly reduced because the instrumentation is visually configurable, and any change to the instrumentation policy can be pushed transparently without requiring a full app update.","PeriodicalId":397633,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd International Workshop on Mobile Development Lifecycle","volume":"162 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134178553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our app helps alleviate the tedious and error-prone use of paper WIC vouchers by allowing participants to scan food items in the store and automatically identify if an item (including its size and quantity) is authorized for the enrolled WIC participant. In addition to serving as a shopping tool, the app also provides a platform for nutrition education through healthy tip push notifications and a gallery of easy-to-fix snack recipes that are tailored for WIC participant shopping choices and other racial/ethnic patterns in dietary preferences. This paper explains the key domain and technical challenges we faced when creating our Android app and describes how we overcame these challenges by applying data normalization, software patterns, and Agile development methods.","PeriodicalId":397633,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd International Workshop on Mobile Development Lifecycle","volume":"34 7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114066415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current methods of development do not allow for efficient creation of contextual applications. In addition, although data from sensors on a mobile device provides a rough estimation of a user's environment, the data needs to be combined in an intelligent way in order to determine a user's intention. In this paper we present the design of a framework called Contextion for easily creating context-aware mobile applications. The framework is built as a layered architecture in order for portions of application components to be adapted based on current contextual information. Contextion also allows for rapid addition of new sensor technologies on a mobile device to the Contextion framework. Using a specification language, end-users can define in what situations various pieces of contextual data should be used and how the data affects the mobile application. In addition, the design of Contextion allows for the definition of operations based on contexts that may not be known at the time of development.","PeriodicalId":397633,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd International Workshop on Mobile Development Lifecycle","volume":"339 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124776549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Apache Cordova library is an example of a middle-ware that enables developers of different mobile operating systems to access mobile native features through web frameworks, such as HTML and JavaScript, which at the same time introduces several security challenges. In this paper, we highlight current security setting limitations of hybrid mobile frameworks and propose a policy based approach to provide limited access to the different pages/states of the app to mitigate the effect of possible attacks. In addition, we downloaded and analyzed 622 real hybrid apps, and presented settings and security statistics.","PeriodicalId":397633,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd International Workshop on Mobile Development Lifecycle","volume":"109 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130825772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we show how the combination of two approaches enables developers to continuously improve usability and user experience of mobile applications.
