The possibility of enabling communication between vehicles through a wireless network stimulated the creation of new protocols, devices, and diverse utilization scenarios. Due to the intrinsic difficulties of using a real testbed to evaluate these research contributions, several simulators were developed at the time. Recently, with the advent of autonomous vehicles and the emergence of novel technologies (e.g., 5G and edge computing), new research challenges on VANETs are coming into sight. Therefore, revisiting VANET simulators is required to identify if they are still capable of evaluating these new scenarios. This paper presents an updated review of VANET simulators, showing their current state and capabilities to assess novel scenarios in VANET research. Based on this analysis, we identify open research challenges that should be addressed in current and future VANET simulators.","PeriodicalId":39760,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Brazilian Computer Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138514938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SE research is a global enterprise that requires the participation of both genders for the advancement of science and evidence-based practice. However, women across the world tend to be significantly underrepresented in such research, receiving less funding and less participation, frequently, than men as authors in research publications. Data about this phenomenon is still sparse and incomplete; particularly in evidence-based software engineering (EBSE), there are no studies that analyze the participation of women in this research area. The objective of this work is to present the results of a systematic mapping study (SM) conducted to collect and evaluate evidence on female researchers who have contributed to the area of EBSE. Our SM was performed by manually searching studies in the major conferences and journals of EBSE. We identified 981 studies and 183 were authored/co-authored by women and, therefore, included. Contributions from women in secondary studies have globally increased over the years, but it is still concentrated in European countries. Additionally, collaboration among research groups is still fragile, based on a few women as a bridge. Latin American researchers contribute a great deal to the field, despite they do not collaborate as much within their region. The findings from this study are expected to be aggregated to the existing knowledge with respect to women’s contribution to the EBSE area. We expect that our results bring up a reflection on the gender issue and motivate actions and policies to attract female researchers to this area.","PeriodicalId":39760,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Brazilian Computer Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138514956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the vast majority of these protocols rely on ad hoc interlacing mechanisms and safety codes which raise the heterogeneity and complexity of the overarching railway system. Therefore, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, the company who is in charge of managing the Italian railway network, coordinated the definition of the Protocollo Vitale Standard (Standard Vital Protocol). This protocol is inspired to, and compliant with, the communication protocols adopted for the European Train Control System (ETCS) (SUBSET, UNISIG, 037, Euroradio FIS, version 2.3. 0; SUBSET, UNISIG, 098, RBC-RBC safe communication interface, 2007), and it is meant to become the standard layer to enable safe communication between components of the Italian railway system. This paper reports our experience in the design, implementation, verification, and validation of the Protocollo Vitale Standard in compliance with the European safety standards for railway systems. We first defined a safety plan and a verification and validation plan, which guide the design, development, verification, and validation activities as required by safety standards. Guidelines of such plans have been followed strictly until completion of the work, which concludes with the provision of a safety case where all safety evidences are summarized. Noticeably, we (i) selected appropriate safety mechanisms, (ii) verified the software design, (iii) implemented the software in compliance with code metrics and coding rules, (iv) conducted tests to validate the protocol against its functional and performance requirements, and ultimately (v) devised all relevant documentation and a safety case which summarizes the evidences needed for certification.","PeriodicalId":39760,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Brazilian Computer Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138514964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
