Exploration well in North Kuwait that targets Middle Marrat formation is met with the challenge of lack of understanding of reservoir compartments in an under-explored field, with minimum offset wells to properly evaluate its potential. A multi-domain approach is proposed with various expertise to tackle the petrophysical and geomechanical aspects of the fracture system governing the carbonate layer, to assess its producibility and its qualification for stimulation through hydraulic fracturing.\u0000 To address the exploration challenge, a novel comprehensive approach for fracture evaluation was implemented for the first time, starting at the wellbore stage, followed by an extensive analysis far away from the wellbore to evaluate their extent and their possible contribution to the flow, later combined with a geomechanical evaluation of their stress state, to come up with a confident estimation of their producibility and subsequently, a proper completion optimization plan for maximum reservoir exploitation.\u0000 The robust approach started with deployment of the image logs photorealistic oil-based mud imager with the purpose of capturing the highest resolution prospect of fractures on the borehole wall. The image logs tool provides direct quantification of fracture properties with regard to their density and orientation, and visual qualification of their type, connectedness, and aperture.\u0000 The 3D Far-Field Sonic technology was then implemented to unveil the ambiguity typically associated with fracture analysis, and provide new insight into the fracture continuity, reaching up to 160ft away from the borehole circumference which is a unique answer product presented for the first time in oil field market. The 3D Far-Field Sonic delivered astonishing results by identifying highly fractured zones and fracture extensions including the true dip and azimuth for each fracture. Geomechanical evaluation was carried out to understand the stress regime, and the relationship between critically stressed fractures with production patterns, and ultimately provide a location and direction to guide enhanced production in future wells.\u0000 Integrating data from various advanced tools helped identify zones of producing fractures and provided a practical solution for stimulation optimization. The multi-domain expertise addressed the challenge of natural fractures consistency between different measurements and allowed for proper evaluation of critically stressed fractures to understand production mechanisms and depletion behavior, through understanding present-day stress state, fracture geometry, and fracture slip properties. The consistency of the study provided convenient results ensuring proper well planning and future completion strategies.

The situation becomes more complex when dealing with an open hole horizontal section with complex trajectory, where the presence of stagnant water sumps and oil humps is common and can lead to in-accurate determination of water and oil entry zones.\u0000 Production logging tools typically deployed in such environments will require to have their data quality checked, as the well conditions can either leave the spinners clogged or the holdup probes sticky with downhole debris or emulsion. Production logging tools will also need to reach the deepest point within the lateral section to ensure complete coverage of the potential flow area across the open hole section.\u0000 Electrical line enabled coiled tubing (CT) technology was considered to overcome the conveyance challenges to deploy these production logging tool. The selected rugged design of the coil-to-wireline interface increased the reliability and the safety of the intervention.\u0000 In this paper, a case study will be presented detailing how careful operational planning, integration between the conveyance method and the production logging tool resulted in the detailed and accurate downhole flow profile, which was then utilized in the ICD design for this well.

This suggests that more meticulous well drilling planning are required to avoid such rock failure. Shale has been a difficulty for many drilling operators, and shale instability difficulties are to blame for 90% of borehole collapse problems. Additionally, compared to shale or sandstone, carbonate rocks are believed to be more capable and to face less instability problems. However, carbonate-based reservoirs make up the majority of the world's hydrocarbon reserves. As a result, a sizable number of wells are drilled in carbonate deposits every year. Due to this, there are now more wellbore instability problems being experienced while drilling carbonate formations globally.\u0000 Rock failure will occur if the field's rock mass is subjected to a huge stress beyond what it can withstand. Construction of models that can foresee the conditions in which a rock can fail will greatly aid in preventing serious problems like borehole collapse and solids generation. Therefore, by accurate geomechanical modeling, the most suitable mud density and borehole trajectory should be understood in advance before drilling. The Mogi-Coulomb failure criterion and a linear elastic stress model for the field are utilized in this study as a geomechanical stability model. The effects of all the major stresses in the fields are reflected and depicted in this three-dimensional stability model. For the benefit of all drilling engineers and operators in Oman, various charts are produced using the stability model.\u0000 Wellbore stability study is generally a difficult task that may need for a highly specialist consultation and is a time-consuming procedure. An important requirement that is overlooked in the oil and gas sector is the need to simplify the wellbore stability analysis in a way that makes it simple and ready for direct use by drilling engineers. The stability charts give the minimum allowable mud density for shale and carbonate rocks to prevent borehole collapse for all drill trajectories. Due to the emphasis on Oman's shale and carbonate formations and the most common possibilities, the created charts are limited for ranges of rock geomechanical characteristics. According to the input parameters, the produced stability charts are divided into several groups. The effect of each geomechanical property is studied to understand the relationships among them. The produced charts for shale and carbonate deposits in Oman and elsewhere are used in actual field case studies. Some of these field applications have already been carried out, while others are still in the works and will likely be discussed in a future project.

Since their launch in late 1920s, induction motors have been the main motor technology used in ESPs. Recent advancements in technology have opened opportunities for the development of higher performance and more efficient topologies for electrical machines. This paper aims to provide a review of different motor technologies in the well oil and water fluid lifting industry.\u0000 The analysis in this paper is constructed around a comparison between several electrical machine technologies when exposed to the harsh downhole environment. The dimensions of each machine are similar and provide a fair comparison. The advantages and drawbacks of each motor are presented in respect to key mechanical or electrical considerations. Solutions are recommended when there is evidence from previous work, and several questions are raised for the feasibility of certain topologies in respect to the new challenges.\u0000 Results show why the induction machine (IM) was selected by ESP providers in late 1920s and why it still has value nearly 100 years later. Permanent magnet machines (PMMs) offer higher power density levels in a smaller package. Synchronous reluctance motors (SyncR) offer a more robust and cheaper alternative, but the design is relatively new and further analysis is still required. Advancements in switched reluctance machines (SRMs) allows for the development of a motor with IM torque capabilities. Both SRM and BLDC (brushless DC) require pulse width modulation (PWM) square-pulse drives, which may prove to be a challenge when driven over a long cable. This paper emphasises the importance of a proper analysis of each motor technology in respect to a particular application. The design of electrical machines should be tailored around the specification of each environment to provide a more robust and efficient system.\u0000 Although some literature is available on the comparison of PMM and IM in the artificial lift (AL) industry, it seems to promote PMMs with little attempt to suggest improvements for traditional IM topologies, which still offer many benefits in terms of ease of manufacture, robustness and capability to operate in extreme environments such as with high temperatures. This paper discusses several other technologies that have not previously been considered. The aim of the paper is to provide a holistic view of the possible problems each technology will face in the downhole environment and inform future work on possible design improvements for the most promising technologies. In addition, the paper will provide a comparative assessment of the different motor technologies in terms of their strength and weaknesses, and also issues that should be addressed for ESP applications.

Shale producers therefore often face challenges getting representative fluid samples. This paper shows the composition of fluids in a low permeability reservoir can be estimated using the theory of chemical reaction equilibria, and in some cases can replace the need for a physical sample.\u0000 It is assumed that chemical equilibrium determines the relative stability of carbon number (CN) fractions in a shale fluid and that the distribution of components can be calculated by solving a reaction equilibrium. Known fluid compositions are used to establish Gibbs’ energy of formation as a function of temperature for each CN fraction across the fluids. Given this trained Composition Estimation Model, only temperature, pressure and GOR (gas-oil ratio) are required to estimate a fluid composition.\u0000 The method has been tested on US shale fluids. Fluids from the Eagle Ford and Permian Basin fields have been used to train the model, making it possible to predict other Eagle Ford and the Permian Basin shale fluid compositions. The model was also evaluated on a fluid from another tight formation in the Texas area. The fluid samples cover reservoir temperatures between 160-320°F, and the fluid GORs range from 2,400 to 8,200 Scf/Stb and saturation pressures from 3,700 to 5,600 psia.

The development encompassed various aspects: administration, technical, lab-to-field transformation, and intensive research.\u0000 One of the primary success factors was identifying potential technologies and forecasting their evolution. High-power lasers were selected for the upstream applications because of their capabilities and successful use in almost every industry, ranging from medical to the military; it attracted the industry due to its unique features, such as precision, reliability, control, and accuracy. High-power lasers at the early stage (generation) were not applicable for downhole applications due to their relatively lower power levels. However, it has been utilized widely in several applications, such as sensing, measurements, and others. The objective of this program is to utilize the new generations of higher-power lasers in several upstream applications. The program is strategically designed to reduce the risk and increase success. In the initial stage, the work focused on the feasibility and characterization of intervening physics. The goal was to answer fundamental technical questions, such as "can lasers penetrate all types of rocks? What are the limitations? What is the effect of the laser on rocks?" The research spanned the last two decades, culminating in the development of the first field prototype of a high-power laser system.\u0000 The work proved that near-infrared multi-kilowatt lasers (hereon high-power lasers or HPL) could perforate and process any rock type at different conditions, including in-situ testing and liquid environments. The experimental plan was designed systematically and divided into phases, starting from fundamentals to advance. Prototype tools were designed, tested, and upscale for field deployment. All applications can be performed with the same HPL source -only the optical head needs to be changed.\u0000 High-power laser technology is an alternative to conventional methods of subsurface energy extraction, such as perforation, descaling, and drilling. A particular EOR method will provide a high prospective result if there is an overestimation of Sorw. The concept of capillary desaturation curve (CDC) is used to determine how much amount of oil can be recovered, when implementing a certain EOR technique. The objective of this study is to determine the true residual oil saturation to water (Sorw) for low permeability Indiana limestone outcrops using the centrifuge technique under reservoir conditions and further generate their CDCs. In this work, three carbonate Indiana limestone outcrops with low permeability range (4-8 mD) and representative fluid samples i.e., field oil, formation water, and seawater, were utilized. The CDC was then characterized for carbonate rocks by further reducing Sorw using surfactant flooding where three anionic surfactant formulations with different IFT values were selected. A systematic approach was followed starting with conventional core analysis followed by special core analysis. For the CDC generation via surfactant flooding, three surfactant formulations having different IFT values were selected through a preliminary screening.\u0000 This study showed that there is no correlation between initial water saturation (Swi) and absolute permeability for the cores tested. In addition, variations in spontaneous oil recovery was noted among cores within the same range of rock permeability, which indirectly indicates the existence of heterogeneity within each rock. Furthermore, a true Sorw of 20-29% was achieved using the centrifuge method, which was confirmed during the surfactant flooding stage. Additionally, CDC studies indicated that a critical trapping number of 10-4 was achieved for the tested cores, which is higher than most of the reported values of 10−8 to 10−6 in the literature. Accordingly, the complete desaturation of mixed-to-oil wet carbonate rocks is quite challenging since it requires a further increase in trapping number, which could possibly be achieved using ultra-low IFT surfactants. This work presents a systematic and comprehensive approach for determining true Sorw and understanding microscopically trapped oil in carbonate rocks based on CDC. The produced results would be useful in EOR screening for future surfactant flooding pilots in carbonate rocks with low permeability.

Phan
\u0000 A software product, called SAGE-WSA, has been developed to provide an integrative platform for experimenting impacts of various affecting factors and mechanisms on the drilling mud design and wellbore stability. The software packages analytical solutions of stresses, pore pressure, temperature, and chemical potentials around wellbore in both intact and fractured poroelastic media, and many failure criteria, including all often-used ones and some developed in-house. The software provides a friendly user interface for accepting inputs required for the well stability analysis and presenting computed results, such as mud weight window, failure region, stress distribution, etc., in form of charts, contour and spreadsheet. The application and performance of SAGE-WSA is demonstrated through calculating safe mud weight windows for drilling a few troublesome formations. In the low-permeability formations, the timescale of fluid diffusion around borehole is in the same order as drilling operation so the safe mud weight window is time-dependent. Computation shows that the critical mud weight calculated by SAGE-WSA converges to well-known Hubbert-Willis (H-W) solution for impermeable borehole at short time and Haimson-Fairhurst (H-F) solution for permeable borehole at large time. In high-pressure high-temperature formation, the time-dependent pressure diffusion and thermal diffusion are coupled. It is observed that the critical mud weight window is overestimated without considering cooling effect, which may cause formation permeability damage. In chemically active shales, the trouble comes from the chemical activity difference between drilling mud and the formation. In the analysis the poroelastic and chemical effects are coupled. For mud with lower activity, the water will be driven out of the formation and the pore pressure can be dropped significantly. In naturally fractured formations, the natural fractures speed up the diffusion process and degrade the mechanical strength, causing the safe mud weight window much narrower.
