Implementing a modern automation and control system is one method often employed to help achieve these goals. Modern control systems provide access to large amounts of data which can be used to enhance the management of production, cost and quality. This is achieved through improved monitoring and control of the process and increased availability and reliability of the manufacturing equipment. Modern control systems are flexible and can easily be adapted to meet the specific requirements and needs of a manufacturing facility whether it is being designed, expanded or modified.","PeriodicalId":396587,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Cement Industry Technical Conference, 2006. Devil's Slide Cement Plant since 2002. The use of CM at the plant has been successful at increasing the availability of plant equipment by enabling the maintenance staff to predict failures and take the proactive steps necessary to avert catastrophic failures. The CM program at Devil's Slide has two major constituents, those being vibration analysis and lubrication analysis. The combined use of these two components in CM has increased the run time on the plant equipment because small problems are fixed fairly easily before they turn into big problems. This paper discusses how to incorporate CM for use by plant maintenance personnel. Some of the most important aspects of CM are how to configure the system for data collection and measurement routines so one can be assured they are obtaining viable data for analysis. It is then important to realize where alarm limits should be placed and when to take action. Training is the key part of a successful CM program. Success comes from having employees trained as experts and certified in the CM arena. Certified maintenance personnel give credence to knowing how to collect pertinent data, interpreting the data, and communicating the results of the data to those responsible for maintenance planning and execution","PeriodicalId":396587,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Cement Industry Technical Conference, 2006. The CIEC undertakes basic research investigating methods for reducing environmental impacts from cement manufacturing operations. In April of 2003 the CIEC Board approved a solicitation for the reduction of greenhouse gases from cement manufacturing operations. Funding in the amount of $75,000 was secured through a grant from the Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District covering the solicitation, submittal review and selection of an appropriate technology/proponent for greenhouse gas reduction/recovery. Obtaining additional funding through EPA, Department of Energy, and the California State Air Resources Board were initially unsuccessful. Response to the solicitation covered 37 distinct projects from 25 submissions, including many foreign submittals. The projects identified from the solicitation have been very promising, with selection of candidates made and initial work plans developed. This paper presents a case study of program aspects from identification and defining solicitation parameters to the current status of selected projects. Specific issues involved with the programmatic approach and types of projects covered by the solicitation are discussed. An overview of the results from the solicitation is presented along with a synopsis of the selection process. The paper discusses the project's progress, current status and funding approaches.","PeriodicalId":396587,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Cement Industry Technical Conference, 2006. There are several methods for the drive to be applied. Depending on the geographical conditions, the material to be transported, the fulfillment of the environmental requirements and the operating methods, a different drive system can and must be supplied. This paper describes the drive system for a down hill conveyor which is mounted between the quarry area and the raw material section of the plant. Because of the operational requirements, the drive is to be adjustable in speed, and capable of regenerating the power on the down hill section. A new technique, the so-called active front end technology, was applied and described in detail. All operating processes nowadays are monitored, with sophisticated control systems. The paper gives a good insight to how the control algorithm was applied and is operating. One of the big advantages proclaimed for this technology is that it is \"extremely network friendly\". The paper shows in detail, what this means, using measurements and analysis in the network. The paper describes, as well, all the environmental fulfilments with the use of a tube conveyor. The content of the paper would not be complete without having a look into the energy balance, from active power taken out of the network, and the regenerative power fed back into the network. It puts an eye, as well, on the aspect of the operating and the life cycle cost.","PeriodicalId":396587,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Cement Industry Technical Conference, 2006. Substitution of bituminous coal with alternative fuels, such as petroleum coke, can yield significant cost savings for the cement producer. However, in the modern pyroprocess, such a substitution can have adverse affects to the specific gaseous emission rates. This paper focused upon high temperature combustion and secondary methods for emission control while firing alternative fuels. Case studies were presented to illustrate the practical aspects of such control measures.","PeriodicalId":396587,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Cement Industry Technical Conference, 2006. Significant progress has been made on the wholesale competition front but major challenges must still be confronted. The framework for supporting retail competition has been less successful. Since the 2000-2001 California debacle, no additional states have announced plans to introduce competitive reforms. In fact, several states that had planned to implement reforms have delayed, cancelled or significantly scaled back their electricity competition programs. On the upside, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) continues to support policies to advance wholesale market reform. Additionally, the Energy Policy Act (EPACT) of 2005 creates new incentives and opportunities to help manufactures manage energy costs. In the absence of new opportunities related to retail energy procurement, energy managers must broaden their focus to include energy cost control through energy efficiency and other consumption related programs","PeriodicalId":396587,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Cement Industry Technical Conference, 2006. The goal of the NETL regional partnerships program is to assess carbon sequestration opportunities that exist throughout the United States and Canada. The PCOR Partnership region covers an area of over 1.3 million square miles and includes nine states and three Canadian provinces. During Phase I activities, an inventory was made of the region's major stationary CO 2 sources, and many of the major geologic and terrestrial sinks were identified and characterized. The most likely sequestration options were matched to the CO2 produced by a given type of point source. Phase I activities identified thirteen cement/clinker production facilities located within the PCOR Partnership region. Collectively, they emit a total of approximately 12.5 million short tons of CO2/yr, which is 2.3% of the CO2 emitted from point sources in the region. Amine scrubbing currently offers the best near-term potential for effective separation of CO2 from cement kiln exit gases, with the cost of capturing and separating CO2 from cement kiln exit gases estimated to range from $41 to $45/short ton. Compressing it to pipeline pressures costs about $9/short ton. The design and siting of cement production facilities should consider the possibility of CO2 capture and sequestration at some point in the future. While on the surface it may seem as if capture of CO2 from cement kilns will result in increased costs to the industry, it in fact may offer significant opportunities for development of new revenue streams, enhanced corporate image, new product development through attendant research and development, and potential efficiency gains in overall process operation","PeriodicalId":396587,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Cement Industry Technical Conference, 2006. Giant Cement is a company who has made the use of waste derived fuel a major part of the overall business strategy. The use of energy from waste derived fuel makes a lot of sense in an energy intensive industry such as cement, knowing that the \"by-product\", being the ashes, can be fully integrated into the clinker minerals and thereby the final product. As realized by most cement producers who have or are using waste derived fuel, whether hazardous or non-hazardous, there is a price tag associated which need to be part of the business model. Also, it requires that all levels of the organization, within the company, buy into the concept.","PeriodicalId":396587,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Cement Industry Technical Conference, 2006.
