In addition, an increase in cyanobacteria has been observed in Lake Biwa. Most of cyanobacteria have a large volume of gelatinous sheath, which is usually called extracellular polysaccharides ( EPS ) and may play a significant role in COD in the lake. Therefore, we analyzed long-term variation of phytoplankton biovolume and EPS volume at Imazuoki, Nagahamaoki and Imazuokichuo-points in the northern basin of Lake Biwa from 1980 to 2009. The EPS volume in 2000 - 2009 increased approximately three times compared with that in 1980 - 1989 at Nagahamaoki-point, although the phytoplankton biovolume in 2000 - 2009 decreased to 85 % of that in 1980 - 1989. Furthermore, the ratio of EPS volume to the phytoplankton biovolume at Nagahamaoki-point reached 112 in 2000 - 2009 while that in 1980 - 1989 remained 31. At Imazuoki and Imazuokichuo-points, the ratio increased from 41 to 109 and from 40 to 120 during the same period, respectively. These results suggest that the large amount of EPS produced by phytoplankton could be one of the major sources of organic matter in Lake Biwa.","PeriodicalId":396312,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Journal of Water Treatment Biology","volume":"117 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122519734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, the relationship between M. aeruginosa dominance and low TN/TP ratio in eutrophic lake was discussed based on the results obtained in this study and reference data. The monoculture as well as monoxenic culture experiment under high nitrogen and phosphorus concentration showed that the growth of M. aeruginosa was affected by nitrogen - deficient condition, and depended on N/P ratio rather than nitrogen and phosphorus concentration. On the other hand, in the monoxenic condition under low nitrogen and phosphorus concentration, the growth depended on both N/P ratio and phosphorus concentration. As the possibility of generally accepted fact that the low N/P ratio ( TN/TP < 29 ) favors the appearance of water bloom, we suggested that low N/P ratio might be a result of water bloom, which would reflect the cellular N/P ratio of water bloom followed by assimilation of nitrogen and phosphorus in lake water.","PeriodicalId":396312,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Journal of Water Treatment Biology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125944380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

No significant difference in nitrogen and phosphorus removal for each submerged macrophyte species at the water temperature ranging from 15°C to 25°C, while slight reduction in removal capability was observed at the water temperature less than 15°C and more than 25°C. The results showed that the removal capabilities were stable in the constructed biological system (CBS) with Ceratophyllum demersum. At low water temperature, the removal capability remained within a certain level in the CBSs with Potamogeton malaianus, Ceratophyllum demersum, Myriophyllum spicatum, Potamogeton oxyphyllus. Among the seven macrophyte species, the strongest affinity with zooplankton was observed for Ceratophyllum demersum. Accrording to the eological insight, cultivation of Ceratophyllum demersum is of prime importance during initial macrophyte-planting in eutrophic waters, because of its strong purification capability and affinity with zooplankton.","PeriodicalId":396312,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Journal of Water Treatment Biology","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115898859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we detected DIRD in anaerobic sludge with a high mineral content (Na, K, Ca, and Fe) taken from an anaerobic tank at a landfill leachate treatment system (LLTS) and the first anaerobic filter chamber of an advanced Johkasou system that uses iron electrolysis (AJIE). Ferrihydrite media treated with LLTS or AJIE samples turned black and showed magnetic response. A bacterium closely related to Desulfuromonas palmitatis SDBY1 was found in the LLTS anaerobic sludge by PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis after incubation. However, no single clear band derived from DIRD was found in the AJIE sample after incubation, although it produced magnetite. The number of DIRD in the anaerobic sludge was quantified by quantitative real-time PCR using a DIRD-specific primer set, and subsequently PCR amplicons derived from DIRD were detected in media containing the LLTS and AJIE samples. DNA sequence analysis of a PCR amplicon from the AJIE sample identified a bacterium closely related to Geobacter lovleyi SZ.","PeriodicalId":396312,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Journal of Water Treatment Biology","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129837539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, an inoculation standardization procedure of the bacteria in sterile wastewater, and examined the effect of this inoculation testing for pH kinetics, acidity, soluble proteins and bacterial growth were conducted. The results demonstrate that the inoculated strains have a tendency to decrease pH and to increase acidity, whereas non-inoculated strains had a tendency to keep or decrease acidity. Soluble proteins from the inoculated strains reached a maximum peak before non-inoculated strains. Colonization growth from the non-inoculated strains had a significant higher mortality compared to the inoculated bacteria. The effect of the inoculated L. plantarum on the raw wastewater colonization, with inoculum percentages of 1% and 5%, both with and without molasses were investigated. The results suggested that for both pH and acidity, the most effective inoculums were at 1%, whereas 5% inoculums proved to be effective in decreasing MPN of fecal coliforms and in BOD removal.","PeriodicalId":396312,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Journal of Water Treatment Biology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131369951","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study characterized biogenic iron oxides (BIO) samples, which were obtained from a biological water treatment plant, from the physicochemical and biological aspects, and examined their As(V) and As(III) adsorption capability in comparison to that of chemogenic iron oxides (CIO). The BIO samples contained large amounts of Fe, Mn and PO 43- and were dominated with Leptothrix spp., a typical iron-oxidizing bacteria, suggesting the formation of Fe and Mn oxides precipitation with large surface area on Leptothrix cell surface. Batch adsorption experiments of As(V) and As(III) (100 to 1500 μ g/L each) with BIO and CIO (5 mg-Fe/L), and the regression of the experimental data by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms revealed that BIO is more effective than CIO regarding the aqueous arsenic removal, irrespective of the species and concentrations of arsenic. The maximum arsenic adsorption capacities of BIO were 34.25 µ g-As(V)/mg-Fe and 28.99 µ g-As(III)/ mg-Fe, respectively, which were 2.7 times larger than those of CIO. Because BIO can be generated continuously by biological oxidation of Fe coexisting in arsenic contaminated water, it can be concluded that BIO-based adsorption would be a promising arsenic remediation technology for Asian developing countries where drinking water source is heavily contaminated with arsenic and contains a high concentration of iron.","PeriodicalId":396312,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Journal of Water Treatment Biology","volume":"158 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127362899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since PFOS is an anionic surfactant, effective removal by means of anion exchange can be expected. The removal efficiencies of PFOS with anion exchange materials were, however, lower than that with activated carbon, suggesting the difficulty of application of anion exchange materials. Removal of PFOS with activated carbon was effective not only under pure condition, but also under contaminated condition with coexisting anions in road runoff. Furthermore, PFOS removal was not inhibited by presence of NO 3- , PO 43- , and Cr 2 O 72- which concentration were, 10 - 10 4 times as high as PFOS, while adsorption of NO 3- and Cr 2 O 72- competed with coexisting anion, resulting in a low removal efficiency. The results that a high removal efficiency of PFOS with activated carbon was obtained and the adsorptive removal performance was not affected by coexisting anions suggest that the hydrophobicity of PFOS become a significant factor when PFOS in the order of ng/ l is removed from road runoff by means of adsorption.","PeriodicalId":396312,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Journal of Water Treatment Biology","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122826071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the pure culture experiment, the N:P ratio did not affect the growth rate of both species at the same temperature. In the mixed culture experiment, the higher temperature of 25 ℃ would favor the dominance of M. aeruginosa , whereas Cyclotella sp. would become a dominant species at lower temperature of 15 ℃ without any influences of N:P ratio in the competitive circumstance. The dominance of these species at the intermediate temperature around 20 ℃ was strongly affected by N:P ratio. Although generally accepted N:P ratio rule suggested that M. aeruginosa favored low N:P ratio, our results clearly indicated that M. aeruginosa could grow and outcompete Cyclotella sp. at higher N:P ratios ranged from 10 to 100 rather than lower N:P ratio of 1. Bacterial reduction of selenium oxyanions into elemental selenium plays a role in soluble selenium detoxification. First, two pilot-scale anaerobic bioreactors (256 l each) were constructed. One was inoculated with granular sludge of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (Reactor A). The other was equipped with the acrylic biomass carrier and was inoculated with suspended sludge of a sewage sludge digestion reactor (Reactor B). However, those bioreactors inoculated with anaerobic sludge failed to remove selenium. As a bioaugmentation strategy, an aerobic selenium-reducing bacterium, Pseudomonas stutzeri NT-I, was inoculated to the bioreactors with slight aeration. Regarding selenite-containing wastewater, Reactor A, where granular sludge and P. stutzeri NT-I coexisted, removed 95 % of 65 mg-Se l -1 quickly within only 2 days. Reactor B equipped with the biomass carrier and inoculated with P. stutzeri NT-I needed 5 days for 98% selenite removal. For selenate-containing wastewater, Reactor A removed only 54% of 30 mg-Se l -1 in 7 days. In stark contrast, Reactor B showed selenium removal from selenate–containing wastewater of over 90% within only 3 days. The effluent of each reactor turned deep red, indicating formation of elemental selenium, which can be removed easily from the aqueous phase because of its insoluble characteristics.","PeriodicalId":396312,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Journal of Water Treatment Biology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126278863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
