The system adaptively varies to changing channel conditions in a way that optimizes throughput while maintaining acceptable error rate performance. System performance for a variety of channel conditions including AWGN, static multipath, time-varying frequency selective and frequency non-selective Rayleigh fading shows that a desired BER can be maintained through adjustment of the processing gain. A trade-off analysis between forward error correction (FEC) coding and spreading shows that a coding rate of approximately 1/2 is best, with the remainder of the bandwidth expansion used for spreading. An overall system adaptation strategy in a broad range of channel conditions is presented.","PeriodicalId":395433,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Communications Theory Mini-Conference (Cat. The weight vectors are controlled by a simple decorrelation scheme which minimizes the correlation between their outputs and the hard limited version of the other outputs, respectively. It has been shown that the \"Bootstrap\" algorithm provides performance similar to that of MMSE with low complexity. In this article, the convergence and stability of the \"Bootstrap\" algorithm is considered. Sufficient conditions for the code cross-correlation and the step size are provided.","PeriodicalId":395433,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Communications Theory Mini-Conference (Cat. The design of serially concatenated codes with short and medium interleavers is considered in this paper; comparisons between union bounds, maximum-likelihood sequence decoding and iterative decoding are presented. An example of code and interleaver optimization is reported. An alternative scheme to current GSM standard channel coding is also analysed.","PeriodicalId":395433,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Communications Theory Mini-Conference (Cat. The catalog of Reed-Solomon is a rather long one. To select a proper code for a given application, the system designer is compelled to deal with numerous tables, graphs and equations. We introduce a novel application of artificial neural networks (NN) in selecting the most \"efficient\" RS code for a specific design scenario. It is shown that 98.04% of the time the NN makes correct selections.","PeriodicalId":395433,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Communications Theory Mini-Conference (Cat. Unlike previous research on sequence based detection, a symbol spaced channel is not given a a priori, rather the receiver utilizes the feedforward channel estimation to derive the matched filter and the symbol-spaced statistics. Then, to enhance the efficiency of the T-algorithm, the use of a mean-square whitening filter (MS-WF) is proposed. We also propose the use of per-survivor processing which brings a further SNR advantage and reduction of the average computations required by the T-algorithm receiver. A substantial SNR benefit over a correct decision feedback equaliser (DFE) is achieved at a moderate increase in complexity.","PeriodicalId":395433,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Communications Theory Mini-Conference (Cat. We present a formal weak coding theorem and its converse. We then show that our coding theorem can be used to obtain the capacity of time-varying ISI channels, which cannot generally be considered using traditional decomposition methods. For perfect instantaneous side information, the form of the input distribution that maximizes capacity is found to be conditional Gaussian. We also consider the capacity of flat fading channels with imperfect channel estimates.","PeriodicalId":395433,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Communications Theory Mini-Conference (Cat. The bounds-which are expressed in terms of only the individual event probabilities and the pairwise event probabilities-are applied to examine the symbol error (P/sub s/) and bit error (P/sub b/) probabilities of an uncoded communication system used in conjunction with M-ary PSK/QAM modulations and maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoding over AWGN channels. It is shown that both bounds provide a good, and often excellent, estimate of the error probabilities over the entire range of the signal-to-noise ratio E/sub b//N/sub 0/. The upper bound on P/sub s/ and the lower bound on P/sub b/ are particularly impressive as they agree with the simulation results even during very severe channel conditions.","PeriodicalId":395433,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Communications Theory Mini-Conference (Cat. Two iterative decoder structures which combine channel equalization and turbo decoding are presented. The first one combines the trellis representing each one of the constituent encoders with the ISI trellis and performs slightly better that the second structure, which treats the ISI as another constituent decoder. We show that for both methods it is possible to perform the equalization blindly, since the parameters of the channel can be estimated jointly with the combined turbo decoding/equalization algorithm. These methods involve little or no sacrifice in performance relative to the case where the channel taps are known by the receiver.","PeriodicalId":395433,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Communications Theory Mini-Conference (Cat. Commun., vol.COM-44, p.238-46, 1996) when the various subbands undergo a generalized type of fading. We consider the average bit-error-rate of such systems in the absence and in the presence of partial band interference, and compare the results with that of a single carrier RAKE system. The final expressions are expressed in a simple form which can be readily computed numerically and offer therefore a useful analytical tool for the accurate performance evaluation of various systems operating in a wide range of fading environments. The mathematical formalism is illustrated by applying the analysis to the performance of a multicarrier DS-CDMA system over Nakagami-m fading. Numerical results confirm that multicarrier systems outperform single carrier ones in the presence of strong interference. Furthermore, the relative difference between the two systems tends to increase as the amount of fading decreases.","PeriodicalId":395433,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Communications Theory Mini-Conference (Cat.
