However, there remain several serious and practical issues. The major defects in NFR due to the use of a solid immersion lens (SIL) are dust and thermal problems compared to orthodox optical storage technologies. The existing SIL is delicate in an unsealed environment due to heat, dust, contamination etc. CISD released a new SIL concept called elliptic solid immersion lens (ESIL) at the last ISOM (T.S. Song et al, ISOM01 p. 130, 2001). The new ESIL is capable of resolving some critical problems that are possibly caused by the existing SIL which records on the disk surface; in addition, the ESIL does not require an objective lens and with its simple structure, it has achieved improvements in mechanical tolerances of the alignment process and in pickup actuator dynamics. Although the ESIL possesses the potential to reduce present restrictions from the conventional SIL, it is necessary to establish a focusing servo system against variation in thickness of the cover layer. Also, a gap maintenance and tilt compensation system using an optical sensor and PZT was proposed in this paper.","PeriodicalId":393728,"journal":{"name":"International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage Topical Meeting","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115238166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have been developing a new phase change optical disc, which has much higher data recording rate of up to 140 Mbps (T. Kato et al, Tech. Dig. ISOM2001, pp. 200-201, 2001), based on the DVR system (/spl lambda/=405 nm, NA=0.85, cover layer thickness=100 /spl mu/m) (Y. Kuroda et al, 1999; M.J. Dekker et al, 2000; Y. Kasami et al, 2000). As a general rule, the smaller the laser spot size on the disc surface, the more sensitive the disc becomes to scratches or fingerprints on it. In such a system, the distance between the disc surface and objective lens (i.e. working distance) is very narrow due to a high NA. Therefore it is also feared that the objective lens hits the disc surface due to an external impact. To avoid these problems when the disc is taken out of a cartridge, we have developed a new hard-coat. The cartridge-free DVR-blue disc was expected to be accomplished by the following properties: (1) abrasion resistance; (2) scratch resistance; (3) water and oil repellency (low surface free energy). Among these properties, the abrasion resistance is considered to be the most important.","PeriodicalId":393728,"journal":{"name":"International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage Topical Meeting","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115604839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At ODS 2001 (M. Ueda, Proc. SPIE, vol. 4342, p. 39, 2002), it was shown that addition of m-tPh (meta-terphenyl) to PC resulted in the excellent performance described above. This technology would be advantageous for production of optical disk substrates without significant increase in material cost. However, such an additive may act as an impurity for an extra pure PC, which may cause poor signal quality. If the additive acts like an impurity, white spots are generated inside the polycarbonate substrate and the transmittance is depressed. In this paper, the author investigated life test performance for substrates made from PC with m-tPh addition. Also, the improved surface hardness induced by m-tPh addition was demonstrated. This nature is preferable for a transparent thin cover layer, since it can avoid a scratch marks. Finally, the ideal viscoelastic property behavior for a resin to achieve higher transcribability, lower birefringence, and lower tilt angle, is proposed.","PeriodicalId":393728,"journal":{"name":"International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage Topical Meeting","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125271064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Disk mastering is necessary for this purpose, and optical disk cutting-machines are key equipment for disk mastering. The laser wavelengths used in cutting-machines are getting shorter as the density of disk memory increases, and these wavelengths are shifting to the deep-UV (ultra-violet) range. We developed a 257-nm cutting-machine with an automatic realignment system for the laser beam and an effective AF (auto-focus) system for a non-dual wavelength objective lens. A 200 mW Ar-SHG laser is used as the laser source. The automatic realignment system consists of two sets of beam-position detectors and mirror actuators, and it is placed after the laser. An EOM (electric-optical modulator) is used as a noise-eater for each line, and a spatial filter is placed between AOM (acoustic-optical modulator) and AOD (acoustic-optical deflector) for wave-front correction.","PeriodicalId":393728,"journal":{"name":"International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage Topical Meeting","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125563518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it becomes difficult to maintain data reliability with increasing recording speed and density, because the signal to noise ratio degrades and recording control of the phase changed mark becomes difficult. To improve the error rate of reproduced data, PRML (partial response maximum likelihood) decoding is expected to be used. We have developed a more advanced method of PRML, where the difference of the reproduced waveform is analyzed and the PRML decoder is compensated. In this paper we report the analysis of the reproduced waveform and the effect of the developed PRML algorithm.","PeriodicalId":393728,"journal":{"name":"International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage Topical Meeting","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122077379","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effectiveness of the achromatic objective lens has been demonstrated in the BD recorder. No reduction of the recording quality due to laser wavelength shift could be observed. We developed a deep UV laser beam recorder (DUV-LBR) and the related mastering process to achieve such a high density (M. Takeda et al, Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. vol. 38, pp. 1837-1838, 1999), which is now to be introduced in the disc mastering process line of DVR-blue (I. Ichimura et al, Tech. Dig. ODS2001, pp. 139-141, 2001). Beyond DUV-LBR, an electron beam recorder (EBR) was proposed to produce further high density pit patterns (Y. Wada et al, Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. vol. 40, pp. 1653-1660, 2001). We have developed a new concept EBR with a novel differential pumping head attached to the bottom portion of the electron beam column. It has no vacuum chamber and an air-spindle motor with a translation stage under the electron beam column is installed in the atmosphere like a conventional LBR. The differential pumping head effectively separates the high vacuum region and the surrounding atmospheric pressure region. The high vacuum region, which is necessary for the electron beam emitted from the column and focused onto the resist coated silicon (Si) substrate, is confined within only a narrow gap between the head and the resist surface. As the spindle motor and the translation stage are operated not in a vacuum chamber but in the atmosphere, high speed recording with sufficient rotational and translational accuracy can be attained. Furthermore, the main body of the EBR can be very compact and cost effective due to the lack of a large and expensive vacuum chamber. In this paper, we report 25 GB density recording performance of our newly developed EBR and some experimental results of recording and reproducing even higher densities up to 50 GB.","PeriodicalId":393728,"journal":{"name":"International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage Topical Meeting","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128623008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
