XML has recently emerged as an important standard in the area of information representation. XML documents can represent information at different levels of sensitivity. However, XML access control models proposed in the literature enforce access restrictions directly on the structure and content of an XML document. Therefore the authorizations, which specify access rights of users on information within an XML document, must be revised whenever the structure of the XML document is changed. We present two approaches that translate the authorizations for the transformed XML document. The first approach translates instance-level authorizations by using instance-level mapping between instance nodes of source document and those of transformed document. The second approach translates schema-level authorizations by using schema mapping between schema elements of the source schema and those of the target XML schema.","PeriodicalId":392999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering, 2002. The design phase forms an important part of the overall effort needed to develop a Web application, since the use of tools can help automate the implementation phase. We carried out an empirical study with students of an advanced university class that used W2000 as a Web application design technique. Our first goal was to compare the relative importance of each design activity. Second, we tried to assess the accuracy of a priori design effort predictions and the influence of factors on the effort needed for each design activity. Third, we also studied the quality of the designs obtained.","PeriodicalId":392999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering, 2002. Formulation and evaluation of semantic queries require schematic and other constraint information as well as general domain knowledge. A new approach to the formulation and evaluation of semantic queries for XML databases is proposed. It employs XML Declarative Description (XDD) - XML based knowledge representation - to model the databases together with the schemata of their XML elements and to represent domain knowledge resulting in a uniform representation of all the required information. Equivalent transformation (ET) - a new computation paradigm which transforms a representation into another while preserving their meanings - is used to optimize and evaluate the queries.","PeriodicalId":392999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering, 2002. Each search server maintains a local index of a collection of documents available at the server or on other peer machines. When a query is received by any server in the network, a distributed search process determines the most relevant search servers and redirects the query to them for processing. We model the distributed search process as Markov decision processes (MDPs). The estimated relevance of a server to a query is regarded as the reward in the MDP model. Once the MDP policies representing the global knowledge are obtained at each server through asynchronous value iteration, the most relevant servers to a given query can be efficiently identified despite the lack of centralized control and global knowledge at each autonomous server. We discuss the implementation and complexity of the asynchronous value iteration and how we extend the traditional MDP to handle the multiple-access policy (i.e., more than one optimal server is returned) and queries with multiple terms. Finally, experiments are conducted using the TREC collection. We show that the MDP-based distributed search can achieve results very close to that of a centralized search.","PeriodicalId":392999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering, 2002. In order to analyze Web-links dividing into links inside each Web site (local-links) and links between Web sites (global-links)for information retrieval, a proper model of the Web site is required. In existing research, a Web server is used as a model of the Web site. This idea works relatively well when a Web site corresponds to a server, as is the case for public Web sites, but works poorly when multiple Web sites correspond to a server, as is the case for private Web sites on rental Web servers. We propose a new model of the Web site, \"directory-based site\", to handle typical private sites, and a method to identify them using information about the URL and Web-links. We verify the method can approximately identify, at a rate of 66% of over 110,000 servers, whether each server has multiple directory-based sites or not, and extract over 500,000 directory-based sites and 4 million global-links by computational experiments using jp-domain URLs and Web-link data contains over 23 million URLs and 100 million Web-links, collected from July to August 2000, by Toyoda and Kitsuregawa. We also propose a new framework of Web-link based information retrieval that uses directory-based sites and global-links instead of Web pages and whole Web-links respectively, and examine the effectiveness of our framework by comparing a result of trawling on our framework to one on the existing framework.","PeriodicalId":392999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering, 2002. This is significantly weaker than declarative querying that is supported by DBMSs. The lack of a schema and high volatility of the Web make \"database-like\" querying of Web data difficult. We report on our work in building a system, called WebQA, that provides a declarative query-based approach to Web data retrieval that uses question-answering technology in extracting information from Web sites that are retrieved by search engines. The approach consists of first using meta-search techniques in an open environment to gather candidate responses from search engines and other on-line databases, then using information extraction techniques to find the answer to a specific question from these candidates. A prototype system has been developed to test this approach. Testing includes evaluation of its performance as a question-answering system using a well-known evaluation system called TREC-9. Its accuracy using TREC-9 data for simple questions is high and its retrieval performance is good. The system employs an open system architecture allowing for on-going improvements.","PeriodicalId":392999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering, 2002. This makes the process of remembering, sharing or ranking such pages difficult. The \"context\" of users' navigation can be described as collections of browsed pages. Conventional bookmarks do not contain such information. We believe that such context information conveys the users' intention and the importance of bookmarks. We introduce a notion of context-dependent Web bookmarks that reflects users' browsing histories. A context-dependent Web bookmark consists of (1) representative keywords of bookmarked pages and browsed pages, (2) the ranking value of bookmarked pages calculated by its context, as well as the URL and title of the page that the user bookmarked. Context-dependent bookmarks will make it possible for users to remember the situation of the bookmarking process, grasp the degree of significance of the bookmark, and share the bookmark among multiple users. Furthermore, it becomes possible to re-use context-dependent bookmarks as queries, which could be executed for unvisited Web pages. We also describe our Web browser prototype system based on the context-dependent bookmark function, and our experimental results.","PeriodicalId":392999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering, 2002. When the quantity of data becomes too large, users need help and tools to find their path in the information space. Users can browse through Terabytes of data and more, and the difficulty is finding the best way through all possible documents. Our feeling is that a user is not generic and has particular interests. Thus, the percentage of relevant documents is small, so the time to access these documents must be reduced. We propose a collaborative proxy architecture, close to the user, based on \"hot\" relevance topics, and the dynamic construction of virtual communities. In this framework, the temperature of a document or a subject reflects its current interest among a community. We propose an architecture that allows proxies not only to manage efficiently cached documents but also to exchange documents with other proxies. Furthermore, these proxies manage meta-data about their partial views of the information space. We show how such an approach fits to enhance global efficiency of the Web both in terms of access time to relevant documents and in terms of Web content indexing, adding semantic value where raw byte arrays are often considered.","PeriodicalId":392999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering, 2002. Among existing approaches, Kleinberg's (1998) HITS and Google's PageRank are the two most representative algorithms that employ explicit hyperlink structure among Web pages to conduct link analysis, and DirectHit represents the other extreme that takes the user's access frequency as an implicit link to the Web page for assessing its importance. We propose a novel link analysis algorithm which puts both explicit and implicit link structures under a unified framework, and show that HITS and DirectHit are essentially two extreme instances of our proposed method. One important advantage of our method is its ability to analyze not only the hyperlinks between Web pages but also the interactions between users and the Web at the same time. The importance of Web pages and users can reinforce each other to improve Web link analysis. Compared with traditional HITS and DirectHit algorithms, our method further improves the search precision by 11.8% and 25.3%.","PeriodicalId":392999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering, 2002.
