This framework enables centralized processing (joint decoding) of multiple femto base stations at a central place termed as femto control station (FCS). The full blown up maximum likelihood centralized decoding at FCS will go beyond any acceptable limits. This paper proposes a novel dual-stage receiver architecture which achieves the tradeoff of centralized processing (joint decoding) and complexity. The basic idea is two folds, i.e. using some linear processing to reduce the dimension of the femtocell system followed by some nonlinear processing to exploit dominant interferences. The resultant multi-stage receiver is characterized by the performance closer to that of an optimal receiver but with much less complexity.","PeriodicalId":392329,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124943499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This algorithm incorporates graph-colouring and network utility concepts to address inter-cell interference in femtocell networks. The aforementioned scheme acts as a multi-cell coordination mechanism on top of intra-cell scheduling by applying a low complexity graph-based algorithm. The objective of the coordination mechanism is the efficient management of resource conflicts due to interference in a multi-cell environment consisting of femtocells. This coordination mechanism defines a novel category of graph-based ICIC algorithms that uses bipartite graph colouring to avoid resource conflicts by randomizing them in time domain.","PeriodicalId":392329,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123571783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Being part of a very sensible eco-system, these entities must be secured against various kinds of attacks. Smart home appliances such as light bulbs or window shutters have very low processing power and networking capacities and more often than not lack of input/output devices such as keyboards or displays. Therefore, special protocols have been developed to enable lightweight and secure communication. Yet, the secure configuration of new nodes in a network has not been solved satisfactory. In this paper we present a three-phase protocol to bootstrap constrained devices in a wireless sensor network based on IPv6 and the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP). The protocol phases include service discovery, distribution of security credentials, and application-specific node configuration.","PeriodicalId":392329,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116528117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the conventional measurement scheme conducted at the base station can not provide the demanded teletraffic in a sufficient small area, and the alternative modelling scheme only provides approximated results. Taking the advantage of the emerging technologies including the intelligent mobile terminal, the location navigation technology and the location-based services, we propose a new teletraffic measurement scheme, which employs mobile terminals to collect their own information and then constructs a database recording every mobile terminal's mobility pattern and communication pattern. We exemplify the proposed scheme using simulations, which employs such a database to derive the demanded teletraffic so as to optimize the relay nodes' locations with the purpose of minimizing the total required bandwidth.","PeriodicalId":392329,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122428083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This centralized solution lacks scalability and fault tolerance and encounters some political issues. We present the design principles of a fully-distributed multi-root solution for ONS lookup service. In distributed systems, the problem of providing a scalable location service requires a dynamic mechanism to associate identification and location. We design, prototype, and evaluate PRONS, a solution based in a distributed hash table (DHT) for the multi-root problem. We show that PRONS achieves significant performance levels while respecting a number of neutrality requirements.","PeriodicalId":392329,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121847914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In reality, the communications requirements vary widely from one application to the next, in terms of range, latency, and connectivity together with vehicle and roadside hardware. Based on the nature of the wireless channel, this presents some challenges for communication to security. These channels, however, are of limited capacity and recent studies have high-lighted their scarcity, in comparison to the broad range of services that are envisioned in vehicular networks. We therefore explore the benefit of using UHF bands for the transmission of control messages, so as to acquire more capacity. Specifically, we focus on content downloading, and design a protocol that leverages the UHF band for control messages and the high-throughput, 5-GHz bands for data delivery. We develop a testbed to quantify the performance of our approach, and show a 3x throughput gain in content delivery with respect to the case where only 5-GHz bands are used.","PeriodicalId":392329,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122261004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is well-known that user selection not only leads to multi-user diversity but also to decreased suboptimality of simple beamforming (BF) techniques compared to optimal Dirty Paper Coding (DPC) approaches. User selection by exhaustive search can be simplified to greedy approaches, in which one user gets added at a time. We review DPC-style and BF-style greedy user selection (GUS), which are developed with DPC or BF transmitters in mind. We introduce a new interpretation of the BF-style user selection criterion, which corresponds to a new approximate criterion that becomes more accurate for a large user pool. This new criterion allows interpretation and comparison of the respective roles of channel strength and orthogonality in DPC-style and BF-style selection.","PeriodicalId":392329,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130231334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to meet the rising demand for large data volumes, shrinking the cell size may be the only viable option. In fact, locally deployed small cells, namely picocells and femtocells, will certainly play a major role in meeting the IMT-Advanced requirements for the next generation of cellular networks. Notwithstanding, several aspects of femtocell deployment are very challenging, especially in closed subscriber group femtocells: massive deployment, user definition of access point location and high density. When such characteristics are combined the traditional network planning and optimization of cellular networks fails to be cost effective. Therefore, a greater deal of automation is needed in femtocells. In particular, this paper proposes a novel method for autonomous selection of spectrum/ channels in femtocells. This method effectively mitigates cotier interference with no signaling at all across different femtocells. Still, the method has a remarkable simple implementation. The efficiency of the proposed method was evaluated by system level simulations. The results show large throughput gains for the cells with unfavorable geometry, up to nearly 300% when compared to the unmanaged situation (reuse 1).","PeriodicalId":392329,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132882947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mainly these approaches are categorized in indirect biomimetics and direct biomimetics. Under indirect biomimetics we discuss 1) emerging paradigms in learning theory and 2) game theory for their potential to enable SO solutions in heterogeneous networks. By means of numerical results we demonstrate the pros and cons of these indirect biomimetic approaches for designing SO in macro-femto coexistence scenarios. Furthermore, we demonstrate the use of direct biomimetic approaches for designing SO by exploiting one to one mapping between a natural SO system and our system model for heterogeneous networks based on Outdoor Fixed Relays (OFR). Numerical results show that the proposed analytical solution can enhance wireless backhaul capacity of the OFR based femtocells by adapting the macro base station (BS) antenna tilts in a distributed and self organizing manner.","PeriodicalId":392329,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124217997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
