Selangor was among the most productive states in coconut produce and contributed to the quantity of coconut exports in Malaya. By the end of the 19th century, coconut product saw an encouraging increase in demands in the international market as European countries began to turn to coconut as raw material for manufacture and food. Noting the potential of coconut as an export commodity with economic value, the British paid particular attention to efforts to commercialise its cultivation. Therefore, this study aims to study the strategies of coconut commercialisation in Selangor, and to analyse its implications on the development of the coconut cultivation sector before 1940. To explain this question, this study uses the qualitative and library research methods by referring to the Selangor Secretariat Files, the Selangor Annual Reports, and the records from the Agriculture Department. The research findings show the special strategies involving aspects of governance, legislation, and land ownership implemented to commercialise coconut cultivation has transformed the pattern of development of the coconut cultivation sector, from a food crop to an export commodity-producing commercial crop. The large-scale coconut production led to the emergence of coconut-based industries with products such as coconut oil and dried coconut (copra) to be exported as raw material to meet the demands in the international market.","PeriodicalId":391944,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of History, Politics & Strategic Studies","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122879671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accordingly, the BN government fell in the 2018 GE before returning to Putrajaya in March 2020 (in the Muhyiddin Yassin administration) and in August 2021 (the Ismail Sabri administration) through a political pact with the National Alliance (PN). In the 2022 GE, scheduled in November, the BN Chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi decided for the BN to go solo in the election and caused an intense multi-cornered fight throughout the country. Ahmad Zahid’s confidence, however, was not without basis. In late 2021, a state election took place in Melaka, before another state election in Johor in March 2022. The BN went alone in these elections and recaptured both of the states from the Pakatan Harapan (PH). Surprisingly, BN recorded poor performance in the 2022 GE, winning only 30 parliamentary constituencies, in contrast to 79 seats in the 2018 GE, out of the total of 222 seats. Based on field research and secondary sources, this article analyses the competition for the Malay vote in the 2022 GE, involving issues and campaigning strategies among the main parties/coalitions, by exploring the factors that shape and change Malay voting patterns in the election.","PeriodicalId":391944,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of History, Politics & Strategic Studies","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115249695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the statistics released by the Election Commission (SPR), the number of new voters who voted for the first time is around 6.2 million, of which 1.3 million are between 18 and 20 years old. Since they are a group of first-time voters, the tendency of their political support could be unclearer. Many parties wonder where their political support is headed, especially in the many-cornered competition involving extensive political cooperation such as Perikatan Nasional, Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, and Gerakan Tanah Air. Accordingly, this paper aims to examine the tendency of new voters during the last GE15 campaign period through an online survey. The survey was conducted openly with the target of eligible voters, and 1438 respondents have given feedback. The study results show that 91 percent of the total number of respondents will go out to vote, and they tend to choose elected representatives who have integrity and are free of corruption, do not break promises, and are highly educated. Most of the group of respondents also tend to support national political trends. From that, new voters who vote for the first time have a good intensity of political literacy. Therefore, they become the determinants of changes in the current political support unrelated to political patronage elements like previous generations. They can also be catalysts for change in society in general and the country’s leadership in particular.","PeriodicalId":391944,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of History, Politics & Strategic Studies","volume":"147 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123368176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The resultant problems following poor financial preparedness to fulfil the fifth tenets of Islam among the Malays have attracted administrators and Malay intellectuals since the 1930s. Criticisms have been levelled against traditional mode of saving that led Malays who intended to go for the pilgrimage being dragged into indebtedness. Some scholars even claim the hajj was one of the cause of Malay poverty. This study utilised the qualitative method by looking at primary sources like the Report of the Pilgrims Economic Welfare Committee, files from the Office of the State Secretary and the Office of the British Adviser. The study found out, other than the traditional mode of savings which is unprofitable, the problem of insufficient fund to go for the pilgrimage or fund insufficiency while in the holy land was also caused by other issues like currency depreciation, the lack of uniformity in the use of foreign currency, and poor guidance from the government with regards financial preparedness of pilgrims from Malaya.","PeriodicalId":391944,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of History, Politics & Strategic Studies","volume":"31 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133084971","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
