Such an architecture should be the framework that will allow the robot to accomplish its tasks but also produce behaviors that support its engagement vis-a-vis its human partner and interpret similar behaviors from him.Together and in coherence with this framework, we intend to develop and experiment various task planners and interaction schemes, that will allow the robot to select and perform its tasks while taking into account explicitly the constraints imposed by the presence of humans, their needs and preferences.We have considered a scheme where the robot plans for itself and for the human in order not only (1) to assess the feasibility of the task (at a certain level) before performing it, but also (2) to share the load between the robot and the human and (3) to explain/illustrate a possible course of action.","PeriodicalId":391548,"journal":{"name":"sOc-EUSAI '05","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114362281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If robots are not common everyday objects, it is maybe because we have looked for robotic applications without considering with sufficient attention what could be the experience of interacting with a robot. This article introduces the idea of a value profile, a notion intended to capture the general evolution of our experience with different kinds of objects. After discussing value profiles of commonly used objects, it offers a rapid outline of the challenging issues that must be investigated concerning immediate, short-term and long-term experience with robots. Beyond science-fiction classical archetypes, the picture emerging from this analysis is the one of versatile everyday robots, autonomously developing in interaction with humans, communicating with one another, changing shape and body in order to be adapted to their various context of use. To become everyday objects, robots will not necessary have to be useful, but they will have to be at the origins of radically new forms of experiences.","PeriodicalId":391548,"journal":{"name":"sOc-EUSAI '05","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123160442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We conducted an experiment to study various user interaction styles for combining input and output devices in an ambient intelligent environment. The results show that the test subjects prefer to press a designated button on a device to select it. They least prefer an automatic selection. The main conclusion is that our subjects are willing to spend a bit of time and effort in order to gain control over their environment. This supports the claim that users acting in ambient intelligent environments should always be kept in the loop; systems should take care not to alienate their users when making decisions for them.","PeriodicalId":391548,"journal":{"name":"sOc-EUSAI '05","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115457894","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Coupling is the action of binding two entities so that they can operate together to provide a new set of functions. For example, coupling a piece of cardboard with a steerable camera-projector pair results in a portable interactive surface. Although coupling is not a new phenomenon, recent research demonstrates that coupling opens the way to unbounded forms of interaction. Because the risk of introducing complexity is high, we propose an analytical model that can serve two purposes: the model can be used to inform the design of novel user interfaces; the computational version of the model can be used at run time as a mechanism to evaluate candidate solutions when dynamic adaptation to the context of use must be undertaken. We illustrate the contribution of the model with three chosen running examples.","PeriodicalId":391548,"journal":{"name":"sOc-EUSAI '05","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129059790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First we illustrate our vision and analyze the requirements. Afterwards we present the architecture of our system focusing on the output coordination strategy, which achieves a coordination of multiple output devices by means of an AI planning approach.Then we present our prototype implementation, which generates movie-related. The implementation consists of a TV set displaying an animated character, a PDA, which acts as a remote control and a 17\" digital picture frame, which displays pictures and renders speech. We conclude with an overview over related work.","PeriodicalId":391548,"journal":{"name":"sOc-EUSAI '05","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131955991","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These interfaces have improved usability by providing more appealing output (graphics, animations), more easy to use input methods (mouse, pointing, clicking, dragging) and more natural interaction modes (speech, vision, gesture, etc.). Yet the productivity gains that have been promised have largely not been seen and human-machine interaction still remains a partially frustrating and tedious experience, full of techno-clutter and excessive attention required by the technical artifact.In this talk, I will argue, that we must transition to a third paradigm of computer use, in which we let people interact with people, and move the machine into the background to observe the humans' activities and to provide services implicitly, that is, -to the extent possible- without explicit request. Putting the \"Computer in the Human Interaction Loop\" (CHIL), instead of the other way round, however, brings formidable technical challenges. The machine must now always observe and understand humans, model their activities, their interaction with other humans, the human state as well as the state of the space they are in, and finally, infer intentions and needs. From a perceptual user interface point of view, we must process signals from sensors that are always on, frequently inappropriately positioned, and subject to much greater variablity. We must also not only recognize WHAT was seen or said in a given space, but also a broad range of additional information, such as the WHO, WHERE, HOW, TO WHOM, WHY, WHEN of human interaction and engagement.In this talk, I will describe a variety of multimodal interface technologies that we have developed to answer these questions and some preliminary CHIL type services that take advantage of such perceptual interfaces.","PeriodicalId":391548,"journal":{"name":"sOc-EUSAI '05","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130590311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An intelligent environment perceives user activity and offers a number of services according to the perceived information about the user. An abstract context model in the form of a situation network is used to represent the intelligent environment, its occupants and their activities. The context model consists of situations, roles played by entities and relations between these entities. The objective is to adapt the system services, which are associated to the situations of the model, to the changing needs of the user. For this, a supervisor gives feedback by correcting system services that are found to be inappropriate to user needs. The situation network can be developed by exchanging the system service-situation association, by splitting the situation, or by learning new roles. The situation split is interpreted as a replacement of the former situation by sub-situations whose number and characteristics are determined using conceptual or decision tree algorithms. Different algorithms have been tested on a context model within the SmartOffice environment of the PRIMA research group. The decision tree algorithm (ID3) has been found to give the best results.","PeriodicalId":391548,"journal":{"name":"sOc-EUSAI '05","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125403037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such design will focus on the specific characteristics of RFID applications such as back-scattering mode, variability of substrates and low cost constraints. The introduction includes a short history of RFID development. The second part will address the main characteristics of RFID antennas. The third part introduces the material characterization. Current developments of RFID antennas that meet the objectives of low-cost and size reduction are presented in part four. Design of antennas on plastic substrate using conductive inks will be shown as an example of low-cost approach. Advanced design techniques for size reduction, such as fractal techniques will be introduced and some design examples will be discussed. The fifth part concerns antenna modeling from the system point of view and examples of system simulation of an RFID communication will be shown.","PeriodicalId":391548,"journal":{"name":"sOc-EUSAI '05","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124538418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among the potential energy sources, we have focused on mechanical surrounding vibrations. To convert vibrations into electrical power we have chosen mechanical structures based on electrostatic transduction. Thanks to measurements and in agreement with recent studies [1], we have observed that most of surrounding mechanical vibrations occurs at frequencies below 100 Hz. We report here global simulations and designs of mechanical structures able to recover power over a large spectrum below 100 Hz. Contrary to existing structures tuned on a particular frequency [2], we have investigated conversion structures with a high electrical damping. Mathematica analytical models have been performed to determine the mechanical and electrical parameters that maximize the scavenged power for a wide number of applications. Two prototypes of mechanical structures have been designed.","PeriodicalId":391548,"journal":{"name":"sOc-EUSAI '05","volume":"163 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120973812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
