Demographic studies about the era shed light on only certain segments of the whole picture, due to the fragmented historical sources, as well as the limited scope of the censuses. Moreover, in the absence of fundamental research, it is not even possible to examine the migration processes that took place in the era. The censuses (conscriptiones) made in the first decades of the 18th century, which in many cases contain the names of the householders, are suitable for examining the demographic changes and the ethnic distribution of certain settlements. This article provides an insight into the demography of the Unitarian settlements belonging to the castle domain of Gyalu by using censuses and ecclesiastical sources. It should be emphasized that this type of research is only a drop in the ocean in terms of the complexity of the issue. In their partition policy, Prussia and Russia managed to make Austria take sides with them on the first, as well as the third occasion, and during these partitions, the Western powers such as France or Great Britain – although fully opposing such violent breach of Polish–Lithuanian statehood – did not act against them. A new kind of balancing policy and partition diplomacy materialized in these partitions of Poland (rozbiory Polski) and the loss of Polish sovereignty. The present paper seeks to explore the roots of this peculiarly balancing constellation of great powers, analysing the political environment that led to the first division of Poland in 1772, while investigating the opinion of Great Britain on the partition. The first part of the study places the 18th-century European political scene in an ideohistorical contéxt, présénting thé concépts of ‘réason of staté’ and ‘balancé of powér’ that motivated the dynamics of diplomatic negotiations. Royalist, or constitutional royalist is a term to describe a moderate political group of the 1640s, concentrating around King Charles I, as his advisors. Recent results identified and categorized some of the main political thinkers of this faction. However, this categorization still has its own limits and is in the need of further clarification. The study is meant to highlight the defining elements of the royalist political discourse, including the notions of the rule of law, the ancient constitution and absolutism. This action created a huge scandal not only in Hungary but throughout the whole Christendom, leading to one of the most acute crises in the Habsburg-papal relations. According to canon law, those who were responsible for the crime became automatically excommunicated (only King Ferdinand I was dispensed temporarily by Julius III), and a long investigation began. The inquiry was led by Count Abbot Girolamo Martinengo, the nuncio to Ferdinand. In this papér, I aim to discuss thé significancé and importancé of Martinuzzi’s figure in contemporary papal diplomacy. Kiss","doi":"10.15170/spmnnv.2021.11.02","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15170/spmnnv.2021.11.02","url":null,"abstract":"For a long timé, Elémér Mályusz’s thesis, according to which foreign clerics flooded Hungarian church benefices, enjoyed unquestionable authority in Hungarian church history research, and this phenomenon could only be stopped by the vigorous action of Sigismund of Luxembourg at the turn of the 14th‒15th centuries. The present research uses prosopographic data of papal envoys to analyse this question for the first decade of the 14th céntury. Thé two papal légatés Niccolò Boccassini and Gentile de Monteflorum, who operated in Hungary, arrived, like many other papal legates, with special powers (facultates) that theoretically provided more opportunities for foreign clerics to receive benefices in Hungary. Since it is not a cathedral chapter, but a collegiate one, therefore it was not noted among the more significant chapters, therefore, due to the particularly rich source material, the compréhénsivé adaptation of thé chaptér’s pérsonnél is a compléméntary task. In thé présént paper, I attempt to introduce the life and carrier of the provosts of thé Chaptér of Vasvár undér the reign of king Matthias I (1458–1490). In the second half of the 15th century there were six provosts in this chaptér, howévér wé aré only familiar with four pérsons’ namé among thém. The study demonstrates the carrier of the remaining two provosts (Thomas of Kutas and Ladislas of Kemend) of the chapter, since their lives are rather well documented. As a canon of Vasvár, Thomas of Kutas visited an Italian university, where he obtained the decretorum doctor grade. Later he held various stallums in thé chaptérs of Győr and Esztergom. Ladislas of Kemend was the governor of abbeys on the commission of the pope, and he also had a position in the court of the Archbishop of Esztergom and later represented King Vladislaus II at the Papal Court in Rome. The focus will be set on the development of the situation regarding the Bosnian bishopric, its position in the political turmoil, and its fate after the collapse of every chance for agreement. First, we will give a short overview of the periods that precede this time when this bishopric was the centre of two waves of the Christianization of these areas and the carrier of religious life during the late Antiquity and early Middle Ages. The main part of the paper is dedicated to the events from the first half of the thirteenth century, crucial period that shaped the future political and religious picture of medieval Bosnia. The Croatian historiography has been focusing on his role in the movement, still considering him an early representative of the thought of independence. Peter Zrinyi’s literary activities have been researched relating to the political ones too. His military career, however, is practically unexamined; not even its major stages are known. Hungarian historians having national sympathies could also be blamed for this backlog due to the fact that they totally neglected his person pushing Nicholas Zrinyi forward in his stead. The present paper aims to outliné Peter Zrinyi’s advancement from a new perspective, namely in interaction with that of Nicholas Zrinyi.
