Chinese small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can bring organizations radical innovation by investing in innovation projects (i.e. big data use; BDU) using the SMEs' scarce resources. Thus, the authors' research aims to predict Chinese SMEs' radical innovation (RI) through BDU using the theoretical lenses of the resource-based view. Moreover, the authors' study also pursues to realize the undermining mediating process of business strategy alignment (BSA) and the buffering role of information sharing in BDU–RI linkage.Design/methodology/approachIn total, 297 Chinese SMEs entrepreneurs and managers were recruited from the Yangtze River Economic Belt, China using a survey approach. In Mplus 7.4, the authors tested the proposed hypotheses.FindingsThe sample of 297 shows that BDU is directly and indirectly (via BSA) related to RI. Further, information sharing moderates the linkage between BDU and BSA and BSA and RI. The association between BSA and RI is only significant and stronger when information sharing is high.Practical implicationsThis research is beneficial for SME entrepreneurs/managers to enhance the understanding of BDU, eliminate challenges of BSA via BDU and align business strategies to bring RI to Chinese SMEs.Originality/valueSMEs always search for new ways to enhance SMEs' productivity using scarce resources. This is the first research that advances big data and innovation literature by predicting firm RI through BDU using a resource-based view. Moreover, this study is novel because the study investigates the mediation role of BSA and the moderating role of information sharing in the linkage between BDU and firm RI in Chinese SMEs.","PeriodicalId":390951,"journal":{"name":"J. The paper enhances quality management processes in organisations and advances the literature on customer-oriented product improvement processes.Originality/valueOnline product reviews are a valuable source of information for companies to capture the true VOC. VOC is then commonly used by companies as the main input for QFD to enhance quality management and product improvement. However, this process requires considerable time, during which VOC may change, which may negatively impact the output of QFD. This will lead to improved efficiencies, strategies and resource usage as such leading to more synergetic and innovative outcomes. This study highlights the importance of dynamic capabilities (DC) during the process of resources recombination (RR). It suggests that DC can be a source of competitive advantage, but the effect is contingent on the RR capabilities of enterprises.Design/methodology/approachData were obtained from 349 faculty members of higher education institutions (HEIs) from seven states in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) using SmartPLS was employed as a statistical tool to analyze the structural model.FindingsThe findings confirm the proposed role of DC in the realization of RR, in integrating and reconfiguring internal and external organizational skills and resources for efficiency and performance, since DC helps RR to reconfigure the resource base by extending, creating, and modifying innovative RRs.Practical implicationsThe study has important implications for resource managers and policymakers of HEIs. By prioritizing DC, firms can develop novel products and services as a result of a heterogenous mix of new RR. Additionally, since firms have limited resources in ever-changing, complex environmental conditions, this study provides explicit directions on how enterprises can strategically manage their resources in an innovative manner to attain a sustainable competitive advantage.Originality/valueInsights from the DC and RR perspective in HEI sectors, particularly in the Middle East region, are scarce. SPSS AMOS SEM is used for scale measurement and hypotheses testing. A sample of 313 respondents was collected from middle to above middle management executives of service industries from India. The authors tested the hidden layers and non-linear relationships using artificial neural network (ANN) analysis.FindingsThe low complexity, center of excellence (CoE), and industry/business partner pressure were significant to the RPA adoption in service industries in emerging economies. Counterintuitively, the scalability showed a negative influence on the RPA adoption, and the process capability did not show influence. The results of SEM and ANN were consistent.Research limitations/implicationsThis research can unfold the RPA adoption scholarly debate to multiple services industries beyond the telecom sector in emerging economies.Practical implicationsRPA is a disruptive technology on the artificial intelligence (AI) continuum. It has the potential to change the ways of working and enable technology-driven transformation. However, despite having thriving service industries that can benefit from RPA, emerging economies lag in adoption compared to the developed nations.Social implicationsThe RPA and automation can bring transformation to human society. Large economies such as India and China have large-scale demand for services, and the waiting lines are a common issue struggled by society. RPA can address the scalability issues of several services.Originality/valueThis study is among the first to examine technology-organization-environment (TOE) with RPA, including RPA contextual variables such as the CoE and scalability. The partial least squares (PLS) technique was used for data analysis to test the research model and hypotheses.FindingsESN use within teams has a positive impact on knowledge depth and knowledge breadth, and ESN use across teams has a positive impact on knowledge depth. Knowledge depth and knowledge breadth are both beneficial for innovation performance. The two types of ESN use have different impacts on knowledge depth and knowledge breadth; moreover, knowledge depth and knowledge breadth have different impacts on innovation performance. Consequently, 381 useable questionnaires were analyzed using structural equation modeling in this study, with a useable response rate of 63.5%.FindingsThis study proposes a solid research model that based on ECM and CA theory, three types of factors, network factors, gamification factor, and quality factors, as antecedents to end-users’ continuance intention of the robo-advisor have been examined, and this study's results strongly support the research model with all hypothesized links being significant.Originality/valueThis study contributes to end-users' continuance intention of the robo-advisor based on ECM, CA theory, theory of network externalities, gamification, and updated DeLone and McLean IS success model, and reveals deep insights into the evaluation of determinants in the field of end-users' continuance intention of the robo-advisor. Where possible, in order to maximise resource impact and minimise organisational disruption, HEIs should practically map these DEN to processes, roles, events, activities, channels, and technologies (PRE-ACTs) that already exist within the organisation. The paper iteratively considers use of additional practical approaches that need be considered in order to ensure that strategic HEI CRM DEN are effectively captured, and that the requirements are appropriately mapped to existing HEI activities.Design/methodology/approachContent from 27 JISC cases, 10 semi-structured interviews and three focus group sessions have been collected and analysed using thematic analysis to understand how to develop preliminary stage 2 steps and assess the applicability of the final CRM strategy orientation support (CRM-SOS) framework stage 2 methods.FindingsThe authors believe that this study provides substantial practical support to CRM implementation practitioners when analysing customer CRM desires, expectation, and needs requirements. The developing practical tools aim to 1) support practitioners better comprehend the multifaceted life cycles, needs, and requirements of HEI customers, and 2) aid in the planning and management of CRM change more effectively.Originality/valueThe paper is extending the recent research around CRM strategy in HEIs by proposing additional practical approaches that need be considered to ensure that strategic CRM are effectively captured. Gong, Chunzhen Zhao, Jian Ai","doi":"10.1108/jeim-04-2021-0179","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1108/jeim-04-2021-0179","url":null,"abstract":"PurposeThis paper investigates the relationship between human capital, economic freedom, governance performance, and economic growth and whether institutional factors such as governance performance and economic freedom mediate the association between human capital and economic growth.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, the authors apply the panel data regression method to verify five hypotheses and check the robustness of the empirical findings from four aspects (chow test, panel unit root test, granger test and generalized method of moments) based on the data covering China, India, Russia, Brazil and South Africa from 2000 to 2018.FindingsAfter multiple tests with mixed methods, the empirical results show that the relationship between human capital and economic growth is not linear but inverted U-shaped. Furthermore, human capital has a positive effect on economic growth only in a certain period of time, and governance performance positively moderates the effect of human capital on economic growth in BRICS.Originality/valueFirst, the impact of human capital on economic growth is not linear but an inverted U-shaped and governance performance moderates the effect of human capital on economic growth in BRICS. The study and research model enhances the authors’ insights on the advantage and challenges of human capital in the future.
