The artifact developed was an online community for the purpose of improving the sense of community amongst students, faculty, and alumni of SISAT by allowing community members to exchange ideas and experience. We found that in order to motivate active participation in a system such as ours, we required a strong administrative presence to provide content and implementing effective interventions on a regular basis to sustain user interest and generate motivation to engage in active participation.","PeriodicalId":390934,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fourth International Conference on Internet and Web Applications and Services","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131938907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Built on the insights gained from previous studies, we built an application that is capable of supporting various creativity techniques based on a virtual whiteboard interface. A two-day pilot study indicated that collocated groups are able to effectively conduct collaborative creativity sessions with different creativity techniques using this kind of interface. We furthermore identified two usage patterns that have a negative impact on the process and propose means to overcome these issues.","PeriodicalId":390934,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fourth International Conference on Internet and Web Applications and Services","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130072211","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To apply this concept we practice an approach between pure e-learning and blended learning. From the technical point of view we need a software environment that fulfills the demands of our didactical concept. In this paper we present our e-learning platform “Electronic Education Environment”. First we illustrate the results of a requirements review concerning different areas. We explain the necessity for the development of a new e-learning software framework. In the main part we show the details of our Electronic Learning Environment together with use cases for students and advisors. We discuss the difficulties and their solutions of a network based e-learning application in a heterogeneous network structure. Finally an outlook to future development potentialities is given.","PeriodicalId":390934,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fourth International Conference on Internet and Web Applications and Services","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133996841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current commercial servers (such as Apache and Microsoft’s IIS) usually employ a thread-based concurrency policy for executing request simultaneously. However, with this policy the throughput tends to collapse when massive overload occurs. Event-based concurrency has been proposed as an alternative, but-–similar to the thread-based approach–-it suffers in its pure form from a potential memory access bottleneck. This is avoided by a server based on a Staged Event-Driven Architecture (SEDA) which combines the two approaches to take advantage of locality in data and code within each state. In this paper, we present a three layer observer/ controller architecture for dynamic performance control of SEDA-based application servers. Control is achieved by a strategy which adapts the resources assigned to each stage based on the observed throughput and queue length of each stage using a feedback loop. To validate our strategy and to compare with other strategies, we implemented a simulation environment. The results gained demonstrate that our approach successfully self-optimizes the CPU time allocation and achieves a competitive system throughput while avoiding performance degradation under overload and dynamic changes in the system.","PeriodicalId":390934,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fourth International Conference on Internet and Web Applications and Services","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133908375","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The introduction of a SOA to reengineer current LMS can provide LMS with the ability to deliver internal functions as services as well as the ability to integrate external applications as services. This paper presents an architectural approach to adapt the Moodle LMS to the SOA and some important issues involved in the adaptation are analyzed. Taking into account interoperability specifications, all SOA to LMS adaptation drawbacks are solved by the application of the new architecture.","PeriodicalId":390934,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fourth International Conference on Internet and Web Applications and Services","volume":"155 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115986056","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is especially true with regard to reaching a level of security beyond the technological layer, that is supported and trusted by all businesses involved. With appreciation of this fact, our research draws from established development methodologies to develop a new, business-oriented framework (BOF4WSS) to guide e-businesses in defining, and achieving agreed security levels across these collaborating enterprises. The approach envisioned is such that it can be used by businesses-in a joint manner-to manage the comprehensive concern that security in the WS environment has become.","PeriodicalId":390934,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fourth International Conference on Internet and Web Applications and Services","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116787772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, analyzing and visualizing the linkage structure of a Web application is quite beneficial to the building of a new Web application or the updating of an old one. The paper proposes a visualization and dependency analysis framework for a Web application, and implements a prototype tool WASViewer. Based on the deep analysis for the text feature of hyperlink, a regular expression-based linkage information extraction method is presented. Then, a third-part component WinGraphviz, is adopted to visualize the dependency relation, which is expressed via adjacent matrix. The complexity metrics for linkage structure graph are also addressed. We found that the degree distribution of dependency graph roughly obeys the power law. In addition, a medium-size Web application is used to validate the effectiveness of our methods.","PeriodicalId":390934,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fourth International Conference on Internet and Web Applications and Services","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130853522","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we present and evaluate the subsystem, which conducts the Advanced and Personalized search of PeRSSonal, a web-based mechanism for the retrieval, processing and presentation of articles and RSS feeds collected from major news portals of the Internet. The proposed technique uses information explicitly provided by the user in his profile as well as information that the mechanism can learn from the user’s behavior during his search and browsing sessions in the system. As this behavior dynamically evolves, the same happens to the user’s interests under the prism of the search engine. By adopting this user-centric approach, we manage to present the user with better-refined and more focused results, incorporating his personal preferences to the output. The algorithm operates not in a stand-alone manner but it co-operates and binds with the rest of modules of PeRSSonal in order to accomplish maximum integration with the system. Furthermore, we introduce an enhancement in the search function, based on cached results from past search sessions of each user individually.","PeriodicalId":390934,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fourth International Conference on Internet and Web Applications and Services","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126305149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
