Qualitative models provide a compact representation since there is no absolute metric; at the same time they preserve much of the important information such as tangency relations and symmetry. A fuzzy logic approach allows some degree of uncertainty in recognizing document blocks and modeling human perception. It is shown that using qualitative reasoning in conjunction with fuzzy logic permits the production of a model that is capable of handling a wider class of documents despite variable locations and sizes of the blocks in the document. The model is based on a new point-interval representation which retains both topological and geometrical attributes of the block regions within a qualitative nonnumeric framework, and a grade of membership vector for each block.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":388685,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Eighth Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Applications","volume":"2015 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121322101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In IDA-NET, a two-phase genetic algorithm approach is used to provide an intelligent mobile subscriber equipment (MSE) network configuration. MSE provides communications support for a typical five-division corps in an area of up to 15,000 square miles. Based on the predefined mission requirements, IDA-NET determines which components are needed to support the mission, how many of each component type is needed, and the locations where the backbone components should be placed in the battlefield to support the communications customers. The approach to developing the network expert module is given, and recent successful network configuration results are outlined.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":388685,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Eighth Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Applications","volume":"119 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114029976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the proposed framework, the use of multiple cases is essential in reducing the problem-solving complexity and ameliorating the knowledge acquisition bottleneck. Two subproblem generation processes are introduced: case-based reduction and goal-directed decomposition. In order to implement these processes effectively, a design model is introduced which maps requirement differences to the part of the design to be modified, and a decomposition algorithm is applied which takes into account the retrieval possibility and interaction occurrence. In a preliminary evaluation, the motor design system's performance was found to be as good as that of a human designer.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":388685,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Eighth Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Applications","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129654882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors discuss how the intertwining of the partitioning and discovery processes enables KEDS to learn relationships from engineering data and to extract the structure underlying these relationships. They present the KEDS algorithm and discuss the interaction between the two discovery and partitioning phases. Some extensions to the basic algorithm are described that greatly improve the performance of KEDS and increase the representation power of the models by permitting a probabilistic partitioning of the problem space. The results from running the KEDS system on data from a simulator for an internal combustion engine are presented.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":388685,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Eighth Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Applications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131305952","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Planning is viewed as a process in which an agent's long-term goals are transformed into short-term tasks and objectives, given in the context of planning. The model allows for a dynamic balance between long-term strategic planning and short-term tactical planning. A combination of rules and scripts is used. Rules are used for reasoning about long-term strategic choices. Scripts are used for representing short-term tasks and objectives. The uncertainty calculi of RUM/PRIMO are used for supporting reasoning under uncertainty. In the proposed model, it is also possible to achieve seamless integration of case-based reasoning into the planning process. These ideas have been implemented in a system called MARS, which plans in the financial domain of mergers and acquisitions.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":388685,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Eighth Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Applications","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115167241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pitch is a sticky material which forms deposits in pulp mills. Pitch Expert, a knowledge-based trouble shooter for pitch problems, operates under a heavy set of constraints imposed by the combination of the expertise itself and the operating environment of pulp mills. To satisfy these constraints, specialized structures and mechanisms were developed and refined to achieve a custom fit. These structures and constraints aid in the maintenance and continued addition of new knowledge to the systems. The utilization of this approach has led to a knowledge-based system with which both the domain expert and the end-users feel comfortable. The result is that the number of mills using this system is growing rapidly.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":388685,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Eighth Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Applications","volume":"303 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121734885","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An experimental observation of aircraft design to see how human designers perform design activity is presented. To match design tools to actual requirements rather than intuitions group design activity was analyzed and support tools were developed to meet the requirements that were identified. The analysis emphasized cooperative conflict resolution and replanning because these are essential to solving system-level problems. Work aimed at applying these concepts to over-subscribed scheduling problems is discussed. The focus is on the problem of constructing short-term schedules for the Hubble Space Telescope, where complex state-dependent constraints on resource utilization interact antagonistically with the ability to satisfy absolute time constraints on execution of goal activities. Two time-bounded heuristic scheduling strategies were defined. The performance of each in balancing this tradeoff was studied experimentally. On the basis of results indicating the differential superiority of each strategy, a composite multiperspective strategy based on recognition of characteristics of the current problem-solving state is defined. Its experimental performance indicates the benefits of constraint-based problem structuring in over-subscribed domains.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":388685,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Eighth Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Applications","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115803541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sometimes optimizing cannot terminate soon enough, and satisficing methods must be used. Quicksearch is a set of techniques for quickly obtaining good, but not necessarily optimal, solutions. These techniques are very specialized. The author simplifies and generalizes the quicksearch concept. Generalized quicksearch was tested, using the 15-puzzle as an example, and compared with the weighted heuristic method.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":388685,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Eighth Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Applications","volume":"141 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126158627","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
