This study was carried out as part of the development of the future Paraguayan-Argentinean-Uruguayan interconnected system. The designed controller was a power oscillation damper of a STATCOM that will be enabled as a backup to damp an inter-area oscillation predicted to appear once the interconnection is completed. A dynamic equivalent model was developed using an approach based on generator coherency identification, while the controller was designed by a pole placement method based on the damped Nyquist plot. Although the designed controller shows satisfactory results for the equivalent model used to design it, when tested in the large-scale detailed model of the system it fails to ensure the desired small-signal stability margin. This result is presented and its implications are discussed from the viewpoint of Hardware-in-the-Loop testing of damping controllers for bulk power systems.","PeriodicalId":388672,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134058389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(NYISO). The proposed TCSPs are intended to dynamically prevent duplicate and redundant transmission shortages from being priced by the graduated transmission shortage mechanism employed in the NYISO-administered markets, which is often referred to as a “graduated transmission demand curve” (GTDC or TDC). The goal is to create mechanisms to avoid unnecessarily high locational marginal prices (LMPs) that can result from multiple-counting of the shortage price of duplicate/redundant transmission constraints or the application of multiple TDC-imposed shortage costs on a single facility. The proposed TCSP approaches are tested on historical power market data that show more meaningful price signals and reflect accurate system conditions.","PeriodicalId":388672,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM)","volume":"164 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134059232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These currents can lead to negative effects such as transformer overheating, excessive harmonics, large reactive power loss, and potential blackouts. To improve real-time situational awareness of system operators, some utilities have installed GIC monitors at the neutrals of critical high-voltage transformers. However, there are no online tools to compute the corresponding transient and steady-state effects of the measured GIC on transformers. This work therefore explores the use of several dense neural networks stacked together to provide near real-time computation of the trajectories of current harmonics up to the 15th order and reactive power consumption for various operating conditions. It was shown that the neural network-based online estimator has an average accuracy of 94% for values above 1 A (or 1 Mvar), and the total computation time requirement on a standard CPU is about 0.53 seconds.","PeriodicalId":388672,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM)","volume":"128 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134499240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditional LRA focuses on altering the active power measurement unit on load buses and branches to increase the system operating cost. This paper proposes a new type of LRA that aims to sabotage the nodal voltage of certain target bus. In our new model, attack resources are not only limited to active power, but reactive power is also included to launch a powerful attack. Moreover, a linear power flow model is introduced to reduce the complexity of the model. Simulations on IEEE 30-buses system has proved the effectiveness and advantages of the new attack strategy.","PeriodicalId":388672,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127553900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wind farm layout optimization (WFLO) is a complex optimization problem that cannot be solved by traditional optimization methods. Therefore, heuristic optimization techniques are used to solve a WFLO problem. With this problem, the search space plays a significant role in the results. Therefore, this study investigates the impacts of solving the WFLO problem in continuous and discrete search spaces using a genetic algorithm. Besides, Jensen's wake effect model is involved in this study to estimate the velocity deficit within the wind farm. A case study that features a wind profile with multi-speed and multi-direction is used to demonstrate how to get a wind farm layout in discrete and continuous search spaces. The results indicate for the superiority of a continuous search space in terms of compactness, whereas the discrete search space has higher output power, efficiency, and shorter computational time. These results are due to the limitations on the number of generations, population sizes, and the computational machine to get the optimality of the genetic algorithm.","PeriodicalId":388672,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131230027","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To reject the PMSM perturbations, a new variant of an adaptive super twisting, ST, controller is proposed in this paper. In this algorithm, a proportional integral, PI, control and a ST control are adaptably combined using the rotor speed. Thus, the proposed algorithm is called speed adaptive super twisting, SAST. Furthermore, a novel mathematical procedure is presented to relate the chattering amplitude and the PMSM perturbations to the SAST design. The main contribution is the SAST application to reduce the stator current total harmonic distortion, THDi. By comparing the SAST control against PI control, the THDi is reduced from 9.9 per cent to 1.27 per cent, in simulation, and the THDi is reduced from 22.79 per cent to 1.56 per cent, experimentally. These results validate the SAST design and demonstrate how the SAST is an excellent alternative to reject the unavoidable perturbations that commonly effect the stator current waveform of any PMSM.","PeriodicalId":388672,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132858892","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With 492 MW of hydropower capacity, which constitutes 15% of PGE's generation mix, it is important for PGE (as any other EIM-participant utility) to understand how participation in EIM impacts its hydropower assets, and how a techno-economically sustainable operation of those assets could be accomplished. This opens up new pathways towards exploiting SSB-driven flexibility for the provision of upstream ancillary services (AS). However, tapping into these resources is contingent on properly dealing with the inherent end-user uncertainty. In that light, this work proposes a detailed mixed-integer nonlinear, joint chance-constrained optimization framework that coordinates SSBs in order to provide voltage and congestion support AS at the MV-LV interface. The sources of intractability (AS model, network nonlinearity, uncertainty) are linearly re-formulated, comprising a mixed-integer linear optimization model. Building on previous work, the proposed operational planning framework limits the occurrence of technical violations, so as to allow the LV network to dedicate all available resources exclusively towards providing AS support to the MV network, in real-time. The model's validity and performance are evaluated on a real Luxembourgian LV grid, assumed to host a significant number of residential SSBs.","PeriodicalId":388672,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133062521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the existing large time-step simulation methods, e.g., frequency adaptive simulation of transients (FAST) cannot yet accurately model it, due to the wide band frequency range. This paper extends the existing theory of FAST, and proposes a multi-timescale transient branch companion model of electrical elements with strong nonlinearity, which is suitable for both small and large timescale electromagnetic transient simulation. Firstly, the dynamic phasor (DP) domain companion model of nonlinear inductor is derived to simulate the flux flowing through the transformer core. A shifting frequency parameter of the DP-based model is then defined to track natural (EMT) or envelope (with large timescale) flux waveform. Then, the relationship between the inrush current and flux is defined by curve fitting method. Finally, integrative simulation of both natural and envelope waveforms of inrush current can be tracked through the curve fitting method. To validate the algorithm, a saturable transformer model is established in this paper and the proposed method is validated in MATLAB.","PeriodicalId":388672,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133555108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper considers a community of townhouses, each equipped with its grid-connected photovoltaic system and a community battery invested by the building management. Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) is used to optimize the electricity bill of each household, the revenue for the building management as well as the usage of the community battery system.
