The Web is the widest spread representative among all systems in the history of hypertext, although its underlying core concept is kept simple. This is why the Web's widely used link functionality is naive, supporting only embedded, unary and unidirectional links. A strength of the Web is its extensibility, giving us the opportunity to augment the current functionality of links. We showcase a browser plugin, which enables users to create and share complex links over the existing Web. Furthermore, we discuss the CB-OHS Mother, its link model and how this relates to existing work. The implementation adopts latest standardization efforts and is an update to older attempts of enabling external link services for the Web.","PeriodicalId":388140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd Workshop on Human Factors in Hypertext","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124571296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been observed that in a single reading session, Wikipedia users visit multiple articles. To reduce the problems of overload and loss of information, there has been a growing interest in the research community to develop new approaches to present the only necessary information to the users. Automatically generation of personalized summaries is a proven remedy for the information overload problem. In this paper, we propose a technique to generate personalized summaries for Wikipedia articles by analyzing the reading patterns of users. To perform reading pattern analysis, we track eye gaze during the article reading session. Eye gaze analysis helps in identifying the attention distribution of a reader over an article. We extend the proposed approach to generate a summary for multiple articles visited during a user's Wikipedia reading session. We capture a dataset representing the reading pattern of Wikipedia users. We make this dataset publicly available for research community1.","PeriodicalId":388140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd Workshop on Human Factors in Hypertext","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114882341","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a transhierarchy, a standard tree view is generated by traversing outbound links from a given node. Inbound links and their descendants are transcluded into the hierarchy, allowing continuous navigation to cross-referenced nodes. Transhierarchy is a practical solution to the problem of how to represent a directed graph in a strict hierarchy. It preserves connectivity, provides context during navigation, and is visually compact, making it a viable method for navigating hypertext on mobile devices. It does not require additional semantics, such as typed links. We explore the history of navigating hypertext via hierarchical views, present an implementation of transhierarchy in the first author's hypertext system, em, and survey its use in several pieces of commercial outliner software today.","PeriodicalId":388140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd Workshop on Human Factors in Hypertext","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126200054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Time Travel: A Live Demo of the Intermedia Hypertext System - Circa 1989 时间旅行:跨媒体超文本系统的现场演示-大约1989年

Brown University's Institute for Information and Scholarship (IRIS) developed Intermedia, a networked, multiuser, multi application hypermedia system that was well-known and oft demoed at conferences (and used by the speaker for his keynote at Hypertext '89). Its most lasting contribution has been the speaker's coining of the word \"anchor\" to represent the \"sticky selection\" that is the source or destination of a link within documents. Anchors generalized these link endpoints to include any media type. Intermedia's development began in 1985. Its paradigm was the integration of bi-directional hypermedia links between different applications in what was then the graphical desktop interface introduced by Apple only a year earlier. Intermedia had many features, some of which have since become mainstream -- anchors (links to a span of text or a set of objects, rather than just a point), full-text indexing, dictionary lookup, links in different media type -- and some still yet to be common in web browser-based systems-- such as bi-directional links, integrated annotation capabilities, tracking of anchors in edited documents, and simultaneous linking by multiple individuals across the network. Two years ago, the Computer History Museum asked if the speaker could resurrect Intermedia to show at the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Doug Engelbart's Mother-of-All-Demos. It was believed that all of the backup disks and tapes had deteriorated, but through the intervention of the hypertext gods, a disk was found that worked and had a full-installation of Intermedia, along with demo files -- including the Hypertext '89 keynote content. The speaker procured some Macintosh IIci machines, monitors, mice, and keyboards on eBay and amazingly, Intermedia ran. In this presentation, you will see a fully-operational hypermedia system running quite nicely on a computer that is 250,000 times slower than today's high-end PCs.","PeriodicalId":388140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd Workshop on Human Factors in Hypertext","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121782298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is sponsored by ACM SIGWEB and is associated to the ACM Conference on Hypertext and Social Media 2020, which took place in July 2020 as a virtual event. In order to avoid too many online meetings during the Hypertext conference we decided to organize HUMAN’20 as a satellite event online on December, 4th. By this, the workshop also acts as a bridging event between two ACM Hypertext conferences. Thanks to SIGWEB’s support, the attendance of the HUMAN’20 workshop is free of registration fees.","PeriodicalId":388140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd Workshop on Human Factors in Hypertext","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133419956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Global warming, COVID-19, abject poverty, endless wars, widening inequality, religious extremism, racial discrimination, white supremacy, and mental health crises are enormous threats to human flourishing and even human survival. These problems require coordinated efforts on a global scale that, thus far, the nations of the world have rarely managed to mount. Essential to societies addressing these problems is the ability to agree on facts, to view science as authoritative, and to engage in vigorous constructive dialog about possible solutions to these problems without vilifying those of differing opinion. Unfortunately, as these difficult problems have grown more insurmountable, so too has the polarization separating people on opposing sides, especially in the U.S. Just as these problems threaten to overtake us, we seem less capable of devising solutions and coordinating efforts to combat them. Today, social media is inundated in rhetoric about these issues, but this rhetoric is rarely constructive. Social media platforms encourage viral outrage as they reinforce polarized views that monetize hyperlinks as targeted advertisements. Bombastic \"debates\" thrive on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Discord, and other platforms, but rarely change anyone's mind. President Trump has almost 90 million followers on Twitter, a platform he has used throughout his presidency to communicate directly to his followers, but his tweets have only exacerbated polarization, promulgated fake news, promoted extremism, and contributed to the rejection of shared truths. Hypertext and hyperlinks are the key features of social media platforms that connect users to online information, but too often this \"information\" is misinformation, disinformation, fake news, propaganda, or conspiracy theory used as \"proof\" for specious claims. People share articles without verifying them and often without even reading them. Our divisive discourse becomes more polarizing and self-affirming, putting solutions to major problems further out of reach. But just as hyperlinked social media subverts our discourse, it also has the power to connect us to the truth, to facts, to debunked conspiracy theories, and to a diversity of ideas. Social media platforms have begun to flag questionable claims and hyperlink us to facts. Novel user interfaces can aid in our ability to separate fact from fiction and engage in healthy online discourse. Douglas Engelbart's pioneering hypertext design boosted individual human capability; so, too, can hyperlinked social media boost our collective civic capabilities. In this keynote, I will characterize the challenges we face and show examples of how we can promote truth, facts, empathy, trust, and constructive dialog in online spaces, so that we can solve our world's greatest problems.","PeriodicalId":388140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd Workshop on Human Factors in Hypertext","volume":"249 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132043093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
