It is a valuable textbook and a useful guide for any stage of a person’s career. It is also a great resource for those places of employment where training and support in human resources is limited. Early on, the authors note that the text is framed in Western culture for their intended audience and constituency and that they believe that “all of us are managing something all the time,” whether it is formally called “management” or not (p. xi). These basic notions set the tone for the book and assist the reader’s understanding of the material shared.","PeriodicalId":387390,"journal":{"name":"Archival Issues","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130922340","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Digital Curation Fundamentals. By Jody L. DeRidder. [Review]","authors":"Ryan Leimkuehler","doi":"10.31274/archivalissues.11898","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.31274/archivalissues.11898","url":null,"abstract":"Jody DeRidder begins her book stating that “websites and digital news stories disappear daily; researchers can’t access their own data for reuse; students don’t know how to make their work last for the next ten years” (p. ix). This disturbing statement is all too real for many archival professionals and sets the tone for why this book is important. Digital Curation Fundamentals is relatively short at 153 pages, but is packed with content. DeRidder builds this text on 14 years of experience developing and supporting a digital library as well as additional resources, including BitCurator, Digital POWRR, and Stanford Libraries’ ePADD Project. DeRidder clearly states in the preface that this book is for the average librarian or archivist, and I would wholeheartedly agree with this statement. The author includes “fundamentals” in the title, but more appropriately should have included the term “foundational” as well. Seasoned digital curators may not find much they do not already know or that may have been covered in other, denser texts, but the size of this book should not deter any professional looking for a quick guide.","PeriodicalId":387390,"journal":{"name":"Archival Issues","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126536683","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Combining examples from the University of Illinois Archives with insights from literature on the impact of technology on reference, it explores the value added by reference archivists in developing new access tools through their experience and diverse knowledge of archival theory, collections, access systems, and user interactions. It also considers the role of the reference archivist in standardized implementation of access tools in university archives to encourage successful discovery and usage of historical materials and to promote collections beyond the reading room.","PeriodicalId":387390,"journal":{"name":"Archival Issues","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132509494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It finds a lack of broad access to pedagogical training in archival graduate programs and continuing education. An alternative approach at the University of Kentucky Special Collections Research Center is presented, including the strategy and impact of soliciting and acting on qualitative student feedback. University of Kentucky’s archival assessment program provides a model for analyzing, summarizing, and acting on qualitative undergraduate student feedback to improve the pedagogy of archivists tasked with instruction.","PeriodicalId":387390,"journal":{"name":"Archival Issues","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129155823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
