Desalination processes are a crucial solution for areas with access to sea water on the one hand and with the inadequacy of fresh water on the other. Used technology, membrane distillation, is a thermally driven separation process using a porous membrane to set liquid and gas phases apart. Water evaporates and its vapour crosses the membrane’s pores. Polypropylene membrane modules and chaotic hollow fiber condenser were used to construct a (fully polymeric) sweep gas membrane distillation unit. Data of four membrane modules were measured to evaluate the unit thermal performance. Limitations lay in 1) the fiber (geometrical) separation of membrane modules, 2) proper utilization of the sweep gas velocity, and 3) improving condensation system. Still, the device shows a significant thermal efficiency ( > 60 %) even at low operating temperatures. Solution of the differential equations is presented in the graphical form. Two diagrams enable to obtain the factors C 1 and C 2 , which depend on the parameters and . Approximate formula for calculation of the critical moments depending on three factors C 1 , C 2 , C 3 and three dimensionless parameters , , was derived in (2000a). The values of the factors C 1 , C 2 , C 3 for basic loadings of the beams with the various combinations of the boundary conditions in vertical and horizontal bending and torsion for the monosymmetric I-sections were published in (2000b). They were later accepted for Eurocode (2007) and many national annexes. The presented results are valid for the beams simply supported with double symmetric I-sections. They may be used also for the continuous beams being slightly on the safe side. Numerical examples show that our results equal to the exact results of commercial computer programs. The aim is to establish a reliable basis and procedure for evaluating the influence of manufacturing variations in the shape of the heel of the protuberant teeth on the stress and load capacity of the gearing. The capabilities of the software used so far bring rather uncertainty. A number of challenging FEA stress calculations for different variations of tooth heel shape deviations that occur in practice have been solved. The effect of changing the mechanical properties of the material with the depth of grinding is discussed. The results will be used both in the design of gearing and as a basis for deciding how to handle parts with defects, whether to continue using them or to scrap them.
