This demonstration focuses on seamless video delivery over Wireless Mesh Networks with Dynamic Stream Merging (DSM) capability. The overall setup consists of a prototype with seven nodes forming the mesh network backbone. All these nodes run DSM software with mobility support. DSM is a robust technique that can reduce both gateway load and wireless traffic for video applications. It has the intelligence to substantially increase the service throughput. In DSM, the upstream nodes of the multicast streaming tree merges similar streams before sending the streams to the downstream nodes thus relaxing the stress in the gateway. The mobility support is provided by our novel session handoff technique. This technique uses a special tree searching algorithm for identifying the next mesh node (foreign node) for re-association with client and uses a novel session rate prediction technique for determining the rate at which the video has to be delivered by the foreign node. We believe that this prototype is the first prototype that can handle completely distributed session handoff over wireless mesh access networks.","PeriodicalId":385797,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo Workshops","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131257433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper is devoted to a particular style of photo layout, in which photos are tightly packed into a rectangular canvas while the aspect ratio and orientation of photos are preserved. In addition, users may specify a desired size for each photo within the canvas. BRIC (block recursive image composition) is a method that has been proposed for this problem [1]. In this paper, we present a better method based on the framework of genetic algorithm. Our method builds on three key components. First, we developed a fast method for computing the photo dimensions for a given layout tree. This makes it feasible to evaluate a large number of layout trees within a time limit that is acceptable for interactive multimedia applications. Second, we adapted a fitness measure that takes into account both the photo coverage of the canvas area and the size distribution of photos. Finally, we constructed appropriate genetic operators and incorporated the aforementioned evaluation method and fitness measure. Our experimental results showed that the proposed method is consistently better than BRIC.","PeriodicalId":385797,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo Workshops","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133518717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the encoder is complexity constrained, accurate estimation of number of bits to decode each bit plane is indeed difficult at the encoder. In case of under-estimation of the bits, correction of the errors in the decoded bit planes, by utilizing the available information, is one of the important tasks at the decoder. This was addressed by recent schemes. In this paper, we present an improved ERC, considering higher group of pictures(GOP). The contributions of the proposed scheme are (1) adaptive rate estimation, considering the dependency across Wyner-Ziv frames (2) motion adaptive reconstruction and (3) Side information refinement after decoding all the frames in the GOP. The proposed scheme is tested with several sequences, showing improvements in the case of GOP-4.","PeriodicalId":385797,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo Workshops","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132263716","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Webbles are objects in a browser window that allow for direct manipulation by drag and drop. One may pick up any Webble and move it over any other one for operational combination. The new Webble is plugged into the previous one and data between them flow through predefined slots. Human users may reconfigure the slot connections of Webbles as necessary. The technology is ready to deal with a great multiplicity of media ranging from text, audio, pictures and video through building blocks of interactive laboratories to highly abstract objects such as decision trees and partial recursive functions. This makes Webbles particularly appropriate for e-learning. The paper aims at an intense workshop discussion of the reach of the technology putting emphasis on the didactic potential of directly manipulating a manifold of digital media types.","PeriodicalId":385797,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo Workshops","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124219969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, previously proposed CS based video codec either require a conventional video codec or a feedback channel for effective operation, thus increasing the complexity. In this paper, a distributed Compressed Video Sensing codec is proposed that only makes use of CS at the encoder. A novel Side Information generation scheme is incorporated in the decoder which exploits the correlation between CS measurements of nearby frames. It is much simpler than other schemes found in the literature and yet effective. Simulation results demonstrate that effective video coding can be achieved using this codec.","PeriodicalId":385797,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo Workshops","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123934590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They enable remote, accurate, and low-cost health monitoring and can provide personalized health monitoring and care with timely detection of health issues, especially for children. In this paper, we propose a novel system for real-time personalized health advisory system for children in order to promote healthy habits and activities (including food, clothing, and activities). The system utilizes Electronic Child Record (ECR) that is continuously updated according to the captured measurements from biofeedback devices, and ontologies for vitamins/allergies, to provide personalized semantic-based recommendations. The preliminary evaluation demonstrated the potential of the proposed system to promote well being of children and facilitate the communication among parties involved in the children care (parents, school staff, and health care staff).","PeriodicalId":385797,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo Workshops","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125726107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, delivering video streams over WMNs increases workload on the mesh nodes, increases bandwidth usage due to dedicated streams and limits scalability. These challenges are overcome by using WMNs with Dynamic Stream Merging Capability (DSM) [1]. DSM is a communication sharing technique that can merge redundant streams at upstream nodes before flowing to downstream nodes in the multicast streaming tree. In spite of these benefits, there is a growing need to use a distributed session handoff scheme to support seamless video streaming for fast moving clients, which not many research works are concentrating on. Thus in this paper, we propose a light weight, fast and distributed scheme that uses a novel session rate prediction technique and a novel Dynamic Relationship Tree (DRT). The proposed session handoff scheme promotes workload sharing and supports mobile clients moving at speeds as high as 250 miles per hour. Based on extensive simulations performed in NS2 we found that the proposed scheme can provide robust and seamless inter and intra-domain session handoff producing less latency and overhead compared to existing schemes.","PeriodicalId":385797,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo Workshops","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129415730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Further, different emotional dispositions of a person are strongly expressed in his/her speaking rate. In this paper we investigate the performance gain originating from the use of the speaking rate parameter in emotion recognition from speech. The speaking rates are determined by applying a broad phonetic class recognizer. The classifier is trained on cepstral features extracted on the emotionally neutral RM1 speech corpus and provides low average recognition errors of one phoneme/second. We present the results of an empirical approach on the emotionally expressive Emo-DB corpus applying a neural network classifier and prove the significant influence of the speaking rate in emotion classification. The performances of Multi-Layer Perceptrons trained on cepstral turn-level features are analyzed with respect to the presence and absence of the speaking rate feature. An increase of accuracy up to 3.7% in certain emotion categories is reported.","PeriodicalId":385797,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo Workshops","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129162366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The state-of-the-art techniques follow a feature-based approach by extracting interest points and describing them by either rotation or affine invariant descriptors. However, requiring rotation or affine invariance comes at an additional computational cost as well as inaccurate estimates in some cases such as out-of-plane rotations. Fortunately, today most mobile devices incorporate 3-D accelerometers that measure the acceleration values along the three axes. In this paper, we propose to employ the acceleration values to calculate the in-plane and tilting rotation angles of the capturing device, in order to alleviate the need for constructing rotationally invariant descriptors. We describe an approach for incorporating the calculated rotation angles in the process of interest point extraction and description. Furthermore, we evaluate empirically the proposed approach, both in terms of computational time and accuracy on standard datasets as well as a dataset collected using a mobile phone. Our results show that the proposed approach provides savings in computational time while providing accuracy gains.","PeriodicalId":385797,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo Workshops","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130508401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
