View modeling is defined as the modeling of the usage and information structure perspectives of the real world from the point of view of different users and/or applications. The view integration phase combines these views into a single community view which is subjected to further optimization and mapping. As a result, instances of users' model may be altered and application programs transformed.This paper proposes a scheme for view representation which will facilitate the process of view integration. This is done by enhancing the data abstraction framework proposed by Smith and Smith. It takes into account the instance-level interrelationships among data and the identification of instances via these interrelationships. The usage perspective is incorporated as rules and assertions about schema- and instance-level insertion and deletion.The problem of view integration is briefly addressed. Valid transformations of views are indicated as a part of the integration process.","PeriodicalId":385279,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1978 ACM SIGMOD international conference on management of data","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1978-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125670073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A very practical problem faced by anyone attempting to use any of these selection techniques is the determination of values for the attribute use statistics. This paper reports on one method which has been empirically tested for determination of attribute access probabilities. Central to this method is recognition of five kinds of statistic collection biases which are systematically considered by the proposed method but which do confound collection by previously developed methods. Finally, experimental results are reported which indicate specific comparative advantages of the proposed method over ones used by the DP staff of a medium-sized manufacturer.","PeriodicalId":385279,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1978 ACM SIGMOD international conference on management of data","volume":"35 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1978-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113959893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But how does a user procure a DBMS that is right for his or her needs? What are the questions that the user should be asking the vendor, and how should the vendor answers be evaluated? These are the central issues to be considered by this panel session. In this session, therefore, panel members will consider the DBMS user's problems in selecting DBMS software. Based upon personal experience and insight in this area, each panel member will seek to identify the central issues which must be considered in the DBMS selection process, including such problems as benchmarking and other pre-selection testing, general selection criteria, cost evaluation, transportability, security, conversion, and reliability. After presenting some of the basic issues, the panel will come to some conclusions as to how managers in industry and government can approach their own DBMS procurements.","PeriodicalId":385279,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1978 ACM SIGMOD international conference on management of data","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1978-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123119308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A data base is taken to be a collection of entities with structure, such as relations. Concurrency is increased in the sense that several readers and a single writer may access a set of entities. At the same time, either serializability or a slightly weaker form of consistency can be seen by all transactions. Each transaction is assumed to obtain all its resources when it starts. The method also allows for convenient recovery from crashes which do not affect the information on secondary storage.","PeriodicalId":385279,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1978 ACM SIGMOD international conference on management of data","volume":"6 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1978-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116521433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Efficient monitoring of database assertions 有效地监视数据库断言

{"title":"Efficient monitoring of database assertions","authors":"M. Hammer, S. Sarin","doi":"10.1145/509252.509290","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1145/509252.509290","url":null,"abstract":"A principal impediment to the use of declarative assertions for monitoring the state of a dynamic database is the high cost of conventional implementation techniques for such a facility. This paper presents a means of efficiently detecting violations of assertions caused by updates to a database. Our technique is based on the premise that the structure of updates to a database can generally be anticipated, and that an analysis of the potential effect that an update may have on an assertion can enable the assertion to be efficiently tested when the update is performed.This analysis is performed by a compile-time assertion processor; for each type of update operation defined on the database, the assertion processor synthesizes a procedure that will be used to evaluate a set of given assertions whenever an operation of the given type is performed on the database. For each assertion and operation, the assertion processor performs a detailed logical analysis, called perturbation analysis, of the effect that the operation may have on the assertion. Perturbation analysis identifies conditions that can be efficiently tested at run-time (when an operation of the given type is performed) and that minimize the extent to which the assertion must be fully reevaluated; the identified conditions also enable the assertion to be tested before the update is actually performed, thereby avoiding the need for expensive back-out procedures in the case that the assertion is found to be violated. Based on this analysis, the assertion processor generates a set of alternative efficient means of determining whether or not execution of the operation causes the assertion to be violated. A database transaction processor, which estimates the performance cost of each of the alternatives in the context of the physical representation and access methods of the database, can then be used to identify the least expensive means of testing the assertion.This work has been done in the particular context of semantic integrity assertions, but it readily extends to related problems of database monitoring. The efficiency of testing that can be achieved through the use of our assertion processing technique in comparable with that attainable through the use of hand-coded procedures. The technique therefore supports all the advantages of the declarative approach to database assertion-monitoring, while retaining the level of efficiency that is usually associated with procedural methods.","PeriodicalId":385279,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1978 ACM SIGMOD international conference on management of data","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1978-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127898838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
