The Pathology Milestone Project, a joint initiative of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Board of Pathology (ABP), has six milestones specifically centered on developing leadership or laboratory management skills.2 Prior to the development of pathology residency milestones, no fewer than three pathology organization consensus documents highlighted the need for management and leadership skills to be incorporated into pathology residency curricula.3-5\u0000\u0000Laboratory management has received a great deal of attention in residency education, with dedicated didactic lectures, specific management or junior laboratory directorship rotations, web-based training tools, and mock lab inspections, among others.\u0000\u0000But how does one teach residents to be true leaders in the laboratory?\u0000\u0000Many educators acknowledge the inherent difficulty in teaching the “soft skills” of pathology, with pattern recognition via unknown slide sets and immunohistochemistry algorithms for small B-cell lymphomas seeming intuitive by comparison. The function of an advisor is multidimensional and involves helping the learner navigate an educational environment.1 The role overlaps and is sometimes confused with that of a mentor, whose focus oftentimes is aimed more at career advancement.1,2 Advising provides the learner an opportunity to have a longitudinal relationship with someone familiar with the goals of learning and the environment in which it takes place, as well as the “hidden” curriculum of values. Advisors effectively provide feedback to learners and help them process it. The relationship also provides for a more effective transition to a new learning environment at the commencement of postgraduate training, earlier intervention in the event a problem ensues during the course of training, and emotional support and encouragement when needed. These benefits warrant attention to the role of the advisor, whether during graduate or postgraduate training.\u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000Although advising is an integral part of a successful learning environment, little formal training is provided to advisors; personnel and economic resource requirements, when coupled with a lack of formal faculty development in this arena, present challenges to establishing and maintaining effective relationships in a systemized fashion beyond what is required for accreditation.\u0000\u0000So how does one begin to think about being an effective advisor? I spent most of my 36-year career as a histotechnologist in areas outside of a hospital laboratory. It took some time for me to understand how the word clinical in ASCP (as in, of or relating to the observation and treatment of actual patients, rather than theoretical or laboratory studies) relates to what I and many other certified medical technologists, histotechnologists, microbiologists, and molecular technologists—to name a few—do at work. While I found that relationship many years ago, I noticed that many clinical laboratory professionals are familiar with careers outside the hospital, but have little information about them; however, I find that I get a lot of questions from newly certified laboratory professionals.\u0000\u0000The positions I describe below comprise the lesser-known side of the coin, but are an important part of patient care all over the globe.
