Various techniques have been developed for the analysis of sexual assault evidence with the aim to generate a single-source male DNA profile. Multiple methods practiced for the isolation of the male component are discussed in this review, with a focus on differential extraction. Benefits of alterations that have been made to the original differential method to increase the efficiency are highlighted. Although improvements were achieved, it is ascertained by this review that these methods are limited in their overall success rate or their applicability. Perhaps future approaches and research should concentrate on more efficient, cost-effective, and time-saving techniques to individually sort or isolate spermatozoa.
","PeriodicalId":38192,"journal":{"name":"Forensic Science Review","volume":"32 2","pages":"105-116"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"38192550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research in the area is the key to combating the pervasive prevalence of this fatal disorder. We sought to identify the top 50 articles concerning SIDS and study their bibliometric characteristics to gain an insight into the research trends in this area. Using the Scopus database, two independent reviewers conducted a literature search using a prespecified search string. Results were arranged according to the citation count, and the top 50 relevant articles were selected. No time restrictions were set, and all types of articles were included. A detailed analysis was carried out to identify the trends and characteristics of the top 50 articles. The top 50 articles were published between 1972 and 2011, with the most productive 5-year interval being 1991-1995. These 50 papers accumulated a total of 13,703 citations (median = 236 citations per paper). Among these, about 9% were self-citations. The citations received by these core papers seemed to decline post-2009. The top 50 articles were published in 21 different journals, with Pediatrics contributing the most (n = 15). US authors were listed for 60% of the articles (n = 30). None of the articles originated from Asian authors. Our manuscript highlights the characteristics of impactful articles on SIDS - and this can act as a directive for researchers aiming to publish on this topic. Bibliometric parameters suggest a decreasing research interest in the fi eld of SIDS, which is concerning, and efforts should be made to promote research. Furthermore, the lack of influential research from Asian authors is also troubling. Funding should preferably be directed toward Asian researchers to bridge the gap in knowledge.
","PeriodicalId":38192,"journal":{"name":"Forensic Science Review","volume":"32 2","pages":"117-127"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"38192551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Forensic science educational programs (VI) - Programs in the US.","authors":"C A Rarrick, A M Cetnarowski, E A Gardner","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Historically, academic forensic science (FS) programs in the US tended to be relatively small and were embedded in a criminal justice, chemistry, or biology department. Then, in the early 2000s, interest in FS surged, many colleges and universities responded to student demand by adding FS degrees to their curriculums. The search for forensic science programs in the US was done online, using the American Academy of Forensic Sciences' Forensic Science Education Program Accreditation Commission (FEPAC) list of accredited programs, the CollegeSource® Online Google search, Universities.com, and forensicscolleges.com as primary sources. Once a college or university with one or more FS programs was identified, the university's web pages were accessed to confirm that the program was active. The site was searched to find the location, home department, program URL, contract information, degree name, degrees offered, and accrediting body for the institution. For universities and colleges with multiple programs in different departments, each department and its associated degrees is listed separately under the institutions entry. All levels from PhD to certificate programs have been included. However, degrees that offer forensic courses as electives are not included. Only FEPAC is listed for accredited FS programs. Part of FEPAC accreditation is documenting that the institution is accredited by a regional accreditation organization. No attempt has been made to evaluate the quality of the FS programs listed. With the proliferation of FS programs since 2001, it is important for potential students to evaluate a degree program carefully before deciding to enroll.
","PeriodicalId":38192,"journal":{"name":"Forensic Science Review","volume":"32 2","pages":"129-154"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"38192552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This recommendation has prompted other organizations and agencies, including the National Safety Council, to evaluate and consider supporting this action. In order to determine the scientific and legal feasibility and advisability of lowering or establishing 0.05 per se laws, we examined 554 alcohol-related publications. Risk factors, instrument reliability, law enforcement, and adjudication issues were considered in this overview of the literature. The extensive scientific literature reviewed provides ample support for lowering the operation of motor vehicle alcohol limits to 0.05, and for supporting the NTSB recommendations. Research clearly demonstrates that impairment begins at very low concentrations, well below the recommended NTSB limit, and increases with concentration. Lowering the limit to 0.05 will save many lives and prevent injuries. Breath, blood, and saliva samples have proved to be accurate and reliable specimens for legal acceptability in a court of law.","PeriodicalId":38192,"journal":{"name":"Forensic Science Review","volume":"26 1 1","pages":"9-22"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41781548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The experimental and epidemiological studies on drugs in relation to driving do not constitute a complete basis for conclusions to be drawn, but give at the present state nevertheless a platform to indicate increased hazard connected with the use of several drugs. It appears that the main problem with respect to therapeutic use of medicinal drugs is experienced with benzodiazepines (BZDs) and related drugs, and to a lesser extent with opioids and antidepressants. Antihistamine use does not appear to be a serious problem. The major problem within the field of drugged driving as it emerges today in the US and Europe is the high dose use (abuse) of BZDs and related drugs, opioids and illicit drugs such as cannabis, amphetamines, cocaine and related drugs with accompanying danger to traffic safety. Methods determining clinical drug effects in people combined with measurements of drug blood concentrations seem to constitute the best basis for evaluation of \"influence\". New methods to detect drugged drivers are under development, with saliva tests presently being the most promising. Legislation in the field can be of the \"zero tolerance\" type or the \"impairment\" type; combinations of these principles might well turn out to be the most efficient. Detection of drugged driving is presently, in relation to population size, most frequent in Norway, a country with not too pronounced drug problems, indicating a large potential for future detection of drugged driving in other countries. The prevention of drugged driving, especially in the drug-abusing group which has a high recidivism rate, is a challenge for future policy in this field.","PeriodicalId":38192,"journal":{"name":"Forensic Science Review","volume":"12 1-2 1","pages":"79-105"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44962750","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various platforms have proven useful in all aspects of health and science research, from molecular diagnostics in cancer research to spore identification in bioterrorism. In the field of forensics, one particular single-molecule sequencing platform shows promise for becoming a viable solution for small to midsize forensic laboratories. Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) has developed a portable, nanopore-based sequencing instrument that has already been utilized for on-site identification of Zika and Ebola viruses, full genome sequencing, evaluation of DNA and RNA base modifications, and enrichment-free mitochondrial DNA analysis. The rapid development of this technology creates possibilities relevant to standard DNA sequencing, direct analysis of forensic samples, including blood, semen, and buccal swabs, mitochondrial DNA analysis, SNP and STR analysis, familial identification, and microbial identification for bioterrorism and geolocation. The small size of the platform, its low cost, and its requirement of only basic laboratory equipment makes this platform well suited for small laboratories wishing to begin developing expertise in sequence-based forensic analyses. Herein, we outline recent developments and applications of nanopore sequencing technologies and their potential application in forensic analysis. We address current and potential techniques in mitochondrial DNA analysis, SNP and STR typing, and microbial identification. Additionally, we discuss recent developments in library preparation and data analysis tool further streamlining the sequencing process that integrate workflows in laboratories or in remote field scenarios.
","PeriodicalId":38192,"journal":{"name":"Forensic Science Review","volume":"32 1","pages":"23-54"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"37601251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is strong evidence on the effectiveness of both direct and indirect measures. The strategy that has the most immediate and largest impact has been highly publicized, visible, and frequent impaired-driving enforcement, especially deploying sobriety checkpoints or random breath testing. Lowering legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limits for driving to 0.05 g/dL or lower has also had a world-wide impact. Raising the legal drinking age has been successful in the US and other countries in reducing young impaired-driver fatal crashes. Graduated drivers' licensing for youth has also been effective by restricting conditions under which youth can drive. Sanctions that reduce impaired-driving recidivism include special driving-under-the-influence (DUI)/driving-while-intoxicated (DWI) courts, mandatory alcohol ignition interlocks, and consistent alcohol-monitoring programs. Opportunities for further progress include better enforcement of the drinking age and refusing to serve obviously intoxicated patrons. Technology for detecting alcohol impairment and autonomous vehicles will also play an important role in future efforts to eliminate impaired driving.
","PeriodicalId":38192,"journal":{"name":"Forensic Science Review","volume":"31 2","pages":"161-184"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"37395705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
