To draw the chemical staying in the vicinity of the source, the robot generates water currents by waving the arms that mimic maxillipeds of a crayfish. Depending on the patterns for waving of the arms, various flow fields are generated. Determination of the direction of the chemical source is enabled by collecting water samples from different directions. Active flow generation thus serves for extracting desired information from the surrounding chemical concentration field. The development of SPR (surface plasmon resonance) chemical sensors for the crayfish robot is also described. SPR sensors compact enough to mount on the robot are realized by employing gold nanostructures for SPR excitation. Comparison between the SPR sensors and the electrochemical sensors used in the previous paper is made to show the importance of sample collection on the sensor surfaces.","PeriodicalId":381692,"journal":{"name":"2008 Seventh International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114726816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The resulting extremely short particle acceleration distance could yield a potential new compact source of energetic electrons and radiation, with wide applications from medicine to physics. Physicists investigate laser-plasma internal dynamics by running particle-in-cell simulations; however, this generates a large dataset that requires time-consuming, manual inspection by experts in order to detect key features such as beam formation. This paper describes a framework to automate the data analysis and classification of simulation data. First, we propose a new method to identify locations with high density of particles in the space-time domain, based on maximum extremum point detection on the particle distribution. We analyze high density electron regions using a lifetime diagram by organizing and pruning the maximum extrema as nodes in a minimum spanning tree. Second, we partition the multivariate data using fuzzy clustering to detect time steps in a experiment that may contain a high quality electron beam. Finally, we combine results from fuzzy clustering and bunch lifetime analysis to estimate spatially confined beams. We demonstrate our algorithms successfully on four different simulation datasets.","PeriodicalId":381692,"journal":{"name":"2008 Seventh International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications","volume":"124 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116325093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The loss function is defined by costs associated to the decision options which may include classes, subsets of classes if partial rejection is considered and all classes if total rejection is introduced. A formulation of the general problem is given, a decision rule which is based on the v-1-SVMs trained on each class is defined and a learning method is proposed. This latter optimizes all the v-1-SVM parameters and all the decision rule parameters jointly in order to minimize the loss function. To extend the search space of the v-1-SVM parameters and keep the processing time under control, the v-1-SVM regularization path is derived for each class and used during the learning process. Experimental results on artificial data sets and some benchmark data sets are provided to assess the effectiveness of the approach.","PeriodicalId":381692,"journal":{"name":"2008 Seventh International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124784813","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, we derive optimal policies for two standard reinforcement learning domains (inverted pendulum and mountain car) in both deterministic and stochastic versions and we examine their internal structure. We then proceed in an evaluation of the representational ability of a variety of classifiers for these policies, using both a multi-class and a binary formulation of the classification problem. Finally, we evaluate the actual performance of the policies learned by the classifiers in the original control problem as a function of the amount of training examples provided. Our results offer significant insight in making the reinforcement-learning-via-classification technology successfully applicable to hard learning problems.","PeriodicalId":381692,"journal":{"name":"2008 Seventh International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127274003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such recovery is possible thanks to the hypothesis that the components are mutually independent and non-Gaussians. The IFA model assumes furthermore that each component is distributed according to a mixture of Gaussians. This article investigates the possibility of incorporating prior knowledge on the mixing process and partial knowledge on the cluster belonging of some samples to estimate the IFA model. In this way, other learning contexts can be handled such as semi-supervised or partially supervised learning. Such information is valuable to enhance estimation accuracy and remove indeterminacy commonly encountered in unsupervised IFA such as the permutation of the sources. The proposed method is illustrated by a railway device diagnosis application and results are provided to show its effectiveness for this type of problem.","PeriodicalId":381692,"journal":{"name":"2008 Seventh International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications","volume":"128 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127295392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We improved PEBL algorithm, and get the document vector of positive set using ontology-based feature extraction, then find the strong positive features, which include the crossing semantics in the positive documents and have higher frequency in positive set. The improved algorithm scans the documents twice. First, we get the semantic of the documents by ontology. Second, we filtrate the terms which include none of these semantic to reduce the dimension and obtain the document vector. Those algorithms implement two modules: source declaration and source verification, which are embedded in a subsumption architecture for chemical plume tracing (CPT). The source declaration module is based on chemical events detected by a chemical sensor, in combination with measured vehicle locations and fluid flow directions, while the source verification module uses a fuzzy color segmentation algorithm to process an image taken when the odor source is declared.","PeriodicalId":381692,"journal":{"name":"2008 Seventh International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129255745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many traditional statistical models, based on microarray data alone, often fail in identifying biologically meaningful genes, which should have synergistic effect on determine the clinical outcomes through some interactions rather than work individually. In this paper, we proposed a network-constrained support vector machine (nSVM) for classification by incorporating prior knowledge, which could be protein-protein interactions, protein-gene regulation relationships or pathways information. Specifically, we use Laplacian matrix to represent gene-gene interaction network to regularize the objective function of SVM, which imposes the smoothness of coefficients over the network. The experimental results on simulation and real microarray datasets demonstrate that our method could not only improve classification performance compared to conventional SVM, but more importantly, it could identify significant sub-networks belonging to several pathways which might be related to underlying mechanism associated with clinical outcomes.","PeriodicalId":381692,"journal":{"name":"2008 Seventh International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125323750","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the current generation has started to access richer multimedia content such as video, increasing the diversity of devices accessing the Web. Then, a problem arises as some of those devices characteristics like memory capacity or screen resolution turn the access to a content restricted. The present work considers the use of machine learning techniques as part of a dynamic video adaptation process, comparing the results from two of the most used approaches for data analysis, Multilayer Perceptron and Bayesian Inference, as part of a Decision Engine, analyzing data like device's capabilities, user's preferences and network condition in order to take the most appropriate way to adapt a video stream.","PeriodicalId":381692,"journal":{"name":"2008 Seventh International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126304095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
