The application to the heat exchanger of dropwise condensation phenomenon which shows high heat transfer performance is desired. However, the relationship between the behavior of the condensate droplet and the heat transfer on the wide condensing surface in dropwise condensation has been not clarified.In this study, the heat transfer characteristics under dropwise condensation are investigated by the calculation and the experiment when the vertical condensing surface is vibrated in gravitational direction. As a result, we found that the heat transfer coefficient was enhanced by the vibration.","PeriodicalId":381569,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Multiphase Flow Research","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131305400","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a basis of model construction, the interaction between a Burgers vortex and cavitation is investigated by the direct numerical simulation (DNS). The vortex is artificially reproduced to represent a fine-scale elementary motion in fully developed turbulence. The results show that both the circumferential velocity and the streamwise vorticity distributions shift due to the sudden expansion by cavitation inception. Assuming the circulation is kept constant, we derive a new model which represents velocity modulation of an elementary vortex for the case of cavitation. Our model successfully explains the DNS results. This simple model can become the basic concept of cavitating turbulence model.","PeriodicalId":381569,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Multiphase Flow Research","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115009139","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed measurement utilizes the electromagnetic induction so that the measurement can be realized with simple experimental devices. The present study consists of two kinds of experiments; one is “static experiment (calibration test)” and another is “flow experiment (actual flow test)”. In the present study, the experiments have been performed with fully diluted magnetic fluid for the purpose of applying to the ordinary two-phase flows such as water-air two-phase flow. Results of the experiments have verified that the proposed measuring technique of void fraction is very effective to measure the void fraction in the two-phase flow by adding a small amount of the magnetic fluid to objective fluid.","PeriodicalId":381569,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Multiphase Flow Research","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128309478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Homogeneous isotropic turbulence is formed by using an oscillating grid in a cylindrical acrylic vessel. The bubble size and generation frequency are completely controlled using a bubble generator. A bubble swarm is generated at a frequency of 4 Hz and consists of 19 bubbles of 2.8 mm in equivalent diameter. The liquid phase velocities were measured via two LDA (Laser Doppler Anemometer). Turbulence intensity, spatial correlation and integral scale were evaluated from the LDA data obtained by the two spatially-separate-point measurement. The turbulence intensity dramatically changed by adding bubble swarms. The original isotropic turbulence was modulated to the anisotropic turbulence by the mutual interaction between bubble swarms and ambient isotropic turbulence. The turbulence modulation was also confirmed by the integral scale.","PeriodicalId":381569,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Multiphase Flow Research","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133474227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the modeling, the interface with a finite width between phases is autonomously formed while satisfying the free-energy theory. The phase-field method therefore needs no conventional elaborating algorithms for advection and reconstruction of the interfaces. The authors developed a unique ultrasonic transducer named as multi-wave TDX. The TDX consists of a special ultrasonic element having two basic ultrasonic frequencies. The central 3 mm diameter area has a basic frequency of 8 MHz and the outer area has a basic frequency of 2 MHz. The TDX can emit the two ultrasonic frequencies independently. Using the two ultrasonic wave lengths, signals of two basic frequencies can be obtained at the same time. Comparing with the each echo signal, the signal combination can be classified into 3 groups. Hence, applying ultrasonic correlation method (UTDC) and the signal comparison method for multi-wave method, bubble rising velocity and liquid velocity distribution can be obtained simultaneously.","PeriodicalId":381569,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Multiphase Flow Research","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121608929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first experimental support for the existence of the standing eddy at the rear of the bubble, as predicted by a previous study by Ryskin and Leal [J. Fluid Mech. 148, 19-35 (1984)], was obtained in the case of high bubble aspect ratio χ . The drag coefficient of small bubble rising in this solution was compared with theoretical one derived by Mei [Phys. Fluids, 6, 418-420(1994)], and it is found that the bubble rising in this solution behaves as the “clean bubble\". It is also shown that both the degree of the fore-aft asymmetry of the bubble shape and the size of standing eddy increases as the discrepancy in both rising velocity and drag coefficient between experimental results and Moore's theory [J. Fluid Mech. 23, 749-766 (1965)] increases.","PeriodicalId":381569,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Multiphase Flow Research","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128787966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The two-dimensional vortex method for gas-liquid two-phase flow, proposed by the authors in a prior paper, is employed. The small air bubbles are injected into still water from a nozzle below a square-section cylinder of which side length is equivalent to the nozzle width. The water velocity on the horizontal cross-sections satisfies the similarity distribution around the plume centerline. The cylinder affects mainly the water flow in the upper region. The water velocity is lower, but the vertical component of the water turbulent intensity is two times higher than those for the plume without the cylinder. The water flow spreads more toward the horizontal direction.","PeriodicalId":381569,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Multiphase Flow Research","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129667448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
