Motivation to address software assurance requires, at a minimum, an understanding of what to do, how to go about it, and why it is needed. Two key foundation elements are principles for software assurance and a curriculum to educate those who must address this need. This paper highlights efforts underway to address both of these elements.","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130014465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While several studies have explored the various motivations of user participation in VCI, the relationship between the motivations and the outcome of interest - the quality of the ideas - has not been explored. Scholars and practitioners have a strong interest in understanding the influence of motivation on quality of ideas. These as valuable insights will help firms who run VCI and are interested in harvesting ideas of good quality from it create effective incentive strategies for generating good ideas. In our research, we hypothesize that certain motivations influence idea quality, while others do not. We find empirical support for the following motivations influencing idea quality: (1) demonstrate personal capabilities and skills through their ideas (capability signaling-motive); (2) get recognition of third parties through their ideas (recognition-motive); and (3) have fun in developing ideas (fun-motive). However, we find no evidence for the influence of customers' altruism (altruism-motive), nor of customers' desire for improving and enhancing existing firms' products by submitting ideas (Product Improvement and Enhancement-motive).","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130092216","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is no surprise that systems experience errors and vulnerabilities in use when many executions are untested. Computations over the functional semantics of programs may offer a potential solution. Structured programs are expressed in a finite hierarchy of control structures, each of which corresponds to a mathematical function or relation. A correctness theorem defines transformation of these structures from procedural logic into non-procedural, as-built specifications of behavior. These computed specifications enumerate behavior for all circumstances of use and cover the behavior space. Automation of these computations affords a new means for validating software functionality and security properties. This paper describes theory and implementation for loop behavior computation in particular, and illustrates use of an automated behavior computation system to validate a miniature looping program with and without embedded malware.","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130118519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, it is a significant undertaking to integrate sensors and measurements into an information system and accurately measure and interpret the human state. Using an experimental design this study explores the use of unobtrusive sensors based on behavioral and neurophysiological responses to predict human trust using the voice. Participants (N=88) completed a face-to-face interview with an Embodied Conversational Agent (ECA) and reported their perceptions of the ECA. They reported three dimensions consistent with the Mayer model of perceived trustworthiness. During the interaction, the demeanor and gender of the avatar was manipulated and these manipulations affected the reported measures of trustworthiness. Using growth modeling and multilevel analysis of covariance methods, a model was developed that could predict human trust during the interaction using the voice, time, and demographics.","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133880014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the product level, the product structures are modeled as complex networks, and the evolutionary characteristics of product structures are analyzed by using network analysis metrics. At the module level, linking mechanisms, which describe how a module is attached with other modules, are proposed. The linking mechanisms are modeled as probability functions dependent on the degrees of linking modules. A case study from an open source software project, Drupal, is presented. The evolutionary trends of Drupal product structures are analyzed and discussed. Finally, a model is presented to illustrate the effects of linking mechanisms at the module level on the product structures at the system level. The results indicate that the model built using the proposed linking mechanisms generates networks whose evolutionary characteristics are close to that of the original network.","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"31 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131726427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Literature has demonstrated that the provision of QM can improve decision performance. In this paper, we examine how information systems, specifically, decision support systems can be designed to help users make better use of QM, using a two-stage approach. In stage-1, we develop a theoretical model and validate it using experimental settings to understand how QM affects decision performance, particularly, the cognitive overload QM creates. In stage-2, based on data visualization literature, we posit that the cognitive load may be reduced by visualization. We develop a visual interface for visualizing data and associated QM. We investigate whether the visual interface will permit a superior integration of QM when compared with a textual interface, even for complex tasks with less-experience users. The results of our experiment largely supported our theory and hypotheses.","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132786761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many published research explored what these E2.0 tools and applications can offer to organizations, such as collaboration platforms, social networking and user-created content, enhancing their productivity and management among employees. However, little research was devoted to study the effect these tools and applications have on the decision making process. Decision 2.0 has received little attention in literature, especially from the standpoint of making use of the \"crowd\". Therefore, this paper focuses on this research gap with a case study in an attempt to elucidate and extract knowledge to answer this question \"How does decision 2.0 make use of the crowd to support the traditional decision making process and hence add value to organizations through collaboration and collective intelligence?\".","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125227319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper analyzes an ongoing ten-year action design research effort, which seeks to leverage transport competition for environmental sustainability by guiding vertical standard design. Drawing on extensive field data, the paper theorizes about design challenges that surround attempts to tie together people, technologies, and processes into integrated IT solutions. In doing so, it illustrates the usefulness of a competitive lens for understanding these challenges and their effects on the evolution of such solutions. The paper also suggests that the action design research approach helps IS researchers to guide technology development in real-world situations.","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131249798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Numerous communities have learned what can go wrong if security is not addressed as numerous cyber incidents have been experienced. While dependence on cyber infrastructures increase, nations have increased their efforts to prepare for a national cyber incident. Unfortunately for communities, nations are overlooking the need for local governments to be prepared for incidents. This is not only true for incidents that might impact or target only a single community, but it also includes national incidents that will have an impact on every community. Even if an incident is being addressed by organizations at the national level, cities still need to function and if they are not prepared to respond to a cyber incident they may find that they are not able to properly meet the needs of their citizens while relying on the government at the national level to address the incident. This paper addresses a model that has been developed to help communities develop a viable and sustainable cyber security program. By doing so, this paper describes a model which can help secure a nation by working from the \"bottom up\" in a grass-roots initiative.","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133569614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper aims to investigate the influence of social media on employees' work performance and the underlying mechanism for how they create value at work. Based on media synchronicity and social capital theories, we propose that social media can promote work performance by stimulating trust among employees and offering a communication channel where explicit and implicit knowledge can be effectively transferred. The research model is tested using data collected from 105 Chinese software professionals. The results reveal that social media can enhance trust among employees. The direct effect on knowledge transfer was not significant but the impact was mediated by trust. Trust enhances knowledge exchange in the workplace with a stronger influence on the transfer of implicit knowledge rather than explicit knowledge. Implicit knowledge transfer was significantly related to work performance, while explicit knowledge transfer did not significantly influence work performance. The theoretical and practical contributions of this study are discussed.","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"22 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133107173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
