To understand the effectiveness of knowledge behaviors, we define individual exploitation and exploration behaviors in terms of different knowledge outcomes, relevance to tasks and pertinence to situations. Today, social media encourages individual workers to access external and internal sources through formal and informal communications. This paper explains individual embeddedness in virtual knowledge networks, based on the scope of knowledge sources (i.e., external/internal) and the types of ties (i.e., formal/informal) to these knowledge sources. We then propose a contingency framework of how individual embeddedness in knowledge networks enhances the effectiveness of knowledge seeking behaviors, and thereby aim to provide theoretical contributions and managerial implications for knowledge management in social networks.","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116079169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our analysis also applies to other collaborative services, such as consulting, financial planning, and auditing. We consider that the client gets utility from the project throughout the development period since the software can be used as it is being developed by the vendor(s). The service output is contingent on the effort level of each party and we allow these effort levels to change throughout the planning period. Hence, the client firm needs to optimally decide on the terms to offer in the contract so as to maximize the service output and minimize its cost. We analyze the performance of different contracts and glean useful managerial insights. Moreover, we analyze two additional settings: (a) the vendor may lower its cost through training, and (b) the vendor or the client gets utility from the output even after the project finishes.","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"179 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122053512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We show how Max Motif, a sequence-mining algorithm, can be applied using a stream-mining approach. Consequently, clinicians can now consider sequential patterns in their analysis of client emailing behaviors. Such analysis is part of the Think and Link project, which provides personalized email clients, a kind of assistive technology, to aid client communications that facilitate activities of daily living. By using the simplified, customized system, clients can now email, whereas they could not previously. By continuously monitoring usage, the project is able continually adapt the software to a user's changing needs. Thus, monitoring software usage, particularly email event sequences, is important. This paper introduces theory and design of stream sequence-mining for UI event streams.","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117105846","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our research examines two distinct but related measures of e-government effectiveness, namely the online service index and the e-participation index, both reported in the 2010 e-government survey conducted by United Nations. We analyze the impact of political structure, administrative culture and policy initiatives on both indices in approximately 160 countries. Our multiple regression analysis shows that when controlling for measures of economic and educational development, there is greater e-government capability in countries that have an administrative culture of sound governance and policies that promote the development and diffusion of information and communication technologies. These results hold in nations that are more democratic, even though political freedom (i.e., press freedom and civil liberties) appears to have a negative impact on e-government. These results suggest that the path to e-government leverages different strategies depending on a nation's political structure, and that countries in which there is less political freedom may be utilizing e-government to maintain the status quo.","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129755756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two corpora were used in the present research. In Study 1 short messages were collected from Twitter and the site 'Secret Tweet' for comparison. In Study 2 'tweets' were collected and rated on sensitivity by six raters. LIWC and regression analyses were used to identify the linguistic markers of secret tweets (Study 1, 16 markers found) and sensitive self-disclosure (Study 2, 10 markers found). A software tool is developed to illustrate the markers in application. Implications for self-disclosure research, users, design and researchers are discussed.","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128785361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many countries, including Italy, refer to transparency as a tool to enhance government accountability, as a principle to promote in order to reduce corruption in public administration and as a means for circulating information on government performance. However, transparency is preached more often than it is practiced in many cases (Heald 2006). Conversely, not all of the information disclosed is easily accessible or accessed by external stakeholders. The purpose of this paper is to assess the degree of transparency of governments and to ascertain the type of information that can be accessed by external stakeholders, especially the general public, in order to evaluate the performance of their government. In particular, the paper focuses on the information disclosed through government websites and assesses the case of larger municipalities in Italy. The paper presents the findings of the analysis and suggests some recommendations for academics and policy makers.","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128654213","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on a cross sectional sample of 107 project managers and using structural equation modeling method, the study verifies the moderating effect of project complexity on the relationship between TMS and KTP. It is concluded that TMS is an important facilitator to KTP and project complexity, as a moderating factor, plays an important role in specialization on team knowledge transfer.","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128958596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We use survey data from 78 matched respondents to answer the question to what extent does IT capability intentions affect a hospital's ability to detect and reduce clinical errors. We investigate empirically the impact of IT capability intentions and IT infrastructure integration on elements of IT-enabled quality of care. Our findings position IT capability intentions as an antecedent to IT infrastructure integration and suggest IT infrastructure integration is the key component in overcoming a highly fragmented delivery system. The degree of IT infrastructure integration has significant effects on quality of care, in terms of both patient-centric responsiveness and error detection and reduction.","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129033112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we examine the role of risk-based penalties in developing alternate designs in which firms combine energy bids associated with uncertain real-time availability with stable reserves bids. Such a study is carried out in a regime where firms have access to a day-ahead market, an uncertain real-time energy market and a reserves market. The resulting game-theoretic problem is a two-period stochastic Nash game with risk-based objectives and the associated equilibrium conditions are given by a complementarity problem. Preliminary numerical results on a 6-firm problem provide insights regarding the impact of reserves prices and risk penalties on wind-based generation, particularly in the face of high variability.","PeriodicalId":380801,"journal":{"name":"2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"11 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124611675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
