Internet of Things (IoT) has a lot of products in the market to help the elderly. However, most of these products can only be acquired by upper class people. This paper proposes a low-cost trustful system for monitoring vital signs and providing basic life support for the elderly. The system consists of vital signs sensors coupled to a glove and a mobile app. The glove collects measurements of heart rate, blood oxygenation, environmental temperature, atmospheric pressure and detects whether the elderly person has fallen. The app shows the data collected by these measurements in real time. The system is based on the concept of Internet of Things (IoT) and uses the Firebase platform to store the data, presenting it in the mobile application. The proposed system present cheaper costs and equivalent measurements in relation to the market products.","PeriodicalId":379968,"journal":{"name":"2022 Symposium on Internet of Things (SIoT)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127520286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of blockchain in this area is in the beginning, but many benefits may be achieved. This paper presents a proof of concept implementation of an animal surveillance system using blockchain and IoT. The architecture consists of a sensor-fog-cloud integration, including blockchain and smart contracts. The proof of concept used real horse temperature measurements, sending this data to a blockchain implemented with the Hyperledger Fabric platform. In the implementation and testing of the system, it was possible to observe that blockchain may improve the availability, immutability, security, and reliability of the data related to the application.","PeriodicalId":379968,"journal":{"name":"2022 Symposium on Internet of Things (SIoT)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116057568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Additionally, the control of the available adjustable parameters of an air cooling split system device through its remote control also can not cope with all the situations that can happen in an office room, such as variable thermal load, represented by the number of people and running equipment in the room, external weather conditions and people movement and personal preferences, for instance. This article presents the initial implementation of a Proof of Concept of Cyber-Physical System Project carried out at Renato Archer Information Technology Center, that aims to improve comfort, health and safety for people in multiple office rooms equipped with air cooling split systems devices, taking into account energy efficiency constraints and innovatives man machine interaction. By smartly tuning the signal reflection via a large number of low-cost passive reflecting elements, RIS is capable of dynamically altering wireless channels to enhance the communication performance. Despite its great potential, RIS faces new challenges to be efficiently integrated into wireless networks, such as reflection optimization, channel estimation, and deployment from communication design perspectives. In this work, we propose a channel estimator for RIS-assisted systems based on machine learning techniques. Firstly, we derive an expression of the required transmit power for the machine-type devices (MTDs) to attain a target signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), considering a channel model that accounts for the RIS discretization into sub-wavelength reflecting elements. Such an expression demonstrates that the transmit power depends on the target SNR, the position of the MTD in the service area, and the RIS setup, which includes the number of reflecting elements and the available reflecting angle configurations. Secondly, we develop an expression for the expected battery lifetime (EBL) of the MTDs, which explicitly depends on the MTD transmit power. Numerical simulations on the energy efficiency (EE) evaluated via the EBL demonstrate the benefits of adopting RISs to enable energy-efficient IoT networks.","PeriodicalId":379968,"journal":{"name":"2022 Symposium on Internet of Things (SIoT)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121774469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The protocol provides connectivity with low energy consumption and a large coverage area. However, many scenarios impose difficulties on the transmission, and sometimes it is necessary to increase the coverage using a multihop approach. The objective of this work is to introduce a gateway-based relay device for a multihop LoRaWAN network. The called relay-gateway is an intermediate device capable of receiving data from many sources due to its hardware capabilities. It is reliable in terms of energy consumption because it uses a fixed energy source. The experimental evaluation conducted at the university campus shows that the relay solution is suitable for extending the network and providing connectivity to remote areas. The results show a 50% increase of packet delivery for some places using the relay solution compared with direct transmission using SF7.","PeriodicalId":379968,"journal":{"name":"2022 Symposium on Internet of Things (SIoT)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129401341","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In consequence, beekeeping production has been negatively affected by the death of bees and product contamination. Besides, the beehive's state of health is a good indicator of the quality of the environment in the area. However, beehives usually are located in remote sites that hamper frequent visits to asses beehive health. Remote monitoring of the production of honey and beehive health would be beneficial for the beekeeping community and also for environmental supervision. This work presents a prototype of a real-time monitoring and control system for apiaries as a first step to providing an integrated solution to beekeepers. The system consists of a device installed in each beehive to measure parameters of interest, such as internal temperature and weight, and transmit this information to a hub connected to the Internet. The internal temperature map is a proxy for the presence and activity of bees. The information collected is presented to beekeepers through a web application where they can access the data of each beehive and open or close its door. Preliminary results show that the proposed approach and system architecture are very promising. Future work includes building a more robust mechanical design, assessing other communication technologies, and a more affordable solution.","PeriodicalId":379968,"journal":{"name":"2022 Symposium on Internet of Things (SIoT)","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127164232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are a relatively brief and not-so-expensive form of access to space. Rocket avionics is very complex and has many interfaces with ground crews before launch. Simplifying data exchange and making it more reliable and efficient is always very important. In this work, an IOT-based telemetry system for sounding rockets is proposed. Such architecture is expected to make data exchange and launch operation more efficient. The adaptations to achieve this goal are presented as well as the results of a proof of concept carried out with Heltec's LoRa 32 radio platform. However, dealing with the different applications' traffic as a single flow and accommodating them in the same slice could increase the congestion and decrease the Quality of Service (QoS) level. In this paper, the Application Traffic Isolation (ATI) approach is presented. It is implemented using the IT-SDN framework on top of TSCH. The performance evaluation considers up to four applications running simultaneously, comparing the proposed approach to another one that considers the whole applications' traffic as a single flow. Simulation results showed that ATI improved both the delivery rate and delay in the application layer. However, it led to more energy consumption.","PeriodicalId":379968,"journal":{"name":"2022 Symposium on Internet of Things (SIoT)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134156562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
