Основными задачами проекта являются подготовка кадров для работы в области управляемого термоядерного синтеза и отработка технологий контроля взаимодействия плазмы со стенками. Большой радиус установки R0 равен 25 см, малый радиус a составляет 13 см. Таким образом, МИФИСТ характеризуется низким значением аспектного отношения — A = R0/a = 1,9, что относит его к классу сферических токамаков (СТ). В данной статье авторы продемонстрировали возможность организации сети реального времени с жёстко зафиксированным циклом управления с помощью свободно распространяемого фрэймворка Xenomai для операционной системы Linux. В то же время анализ проблем и потенциала двух ядерных технологий, основанных на реакциях синтеза лёгких ядер и деления тяжёлых, показывает, что независимый масштабный рост каждого из указанных направлений неизбежно приведёт к необходимости преодоления ещё не решённых проблем технологического, материаловедческого, экологического и экономического характера, некоторые из которых поставят вопрос о целесообразности дальнейшего развития этих отраслей энергетики. Вместе с тем физические особенности процессов деления и синтеза объективно указывают на целесообразность их объединения в рамках единой ядерной энергетической системы. Плазменная нагрузка на поверхность вольфрамовых лимитеров приводит к эрозии и формированию неоднородной шероховатой поверхности. Условия в приповерхностной плазме над шероховатой поверхностью благоприятны для формирования дуг и искр, влияющих на перегрев поверхности материала. Влияние униполярных дуг и искр на взаимодействие плазмы с поверхностью может привести к усилению теплообмена плазмы с поверхностью и к охлаждению плазмы.
